no R&B isnt dead but it kinda all sounds the same, & it kinda sounds like rap songs

I agree......the discerning differences that were once in R&B have now merged in with rap you can't tell the difference anymore! It's all the damn same..........

Lyfe Jennings is a very positive R&B artist although I’d have say Anthony Hamilton can own Lyfe any day haha.. I agree though, constructive r&b has been practically replaced by vulgar disgusting rap or this new generation of r&b which I call the conformist rhythm and blues. None of it is about the music anymore. It’s about materialism and misogyny. There’s no more originality no more dedication in music. Real r&b music has been displaced and it saddens me.

I agree with Krazoom however their are artists who do have whats been missing latley but they just havent gotten the attention or recognition they deserve. I mean record companies now have set a low standard for quality but unfortunately sex sells in the industry
- oh btw i love lyfe he always has a postitive message to spin hes awesome lol

R&B IS NOT DEAD!!!!! Let me break it down for y'all. Beyonce, Ne-Yo and all them cats are POP! Yes, Pop. Let me tell you why. R&B beats now are beats you usually hear in Rap which means they can't compete unless they're singin a hook on a rapper's song or if they have a Rap bet with it. Rap is obviously mainstream and popular, but it's still classified as Rap. "Comtemporary R&B," as it's dubbed sometimes, has to have rap beats to stay in the game. it's Pop. Plus Timberand's beats sound the same now and caters-sounds-IS Pop anyway unlike the days where he was with Magoo, Aaliyah, Missy, and the gang.

For Male R&B artists, it's hard to compete because in the music industry. There's the impression that their only needs to be one male R&B singer dominating the genre while the ohers sit back and wait again to get their shine again, which may never happen. Haven't you notice one male artist comes in for a second and then BOOM, another male artists comes and takes their spot. Example: Lyfe came with his first single and then he was moved from the spotlight because Trey Songz came with his first single. Trey Songz enjoyed being in the spotlight for two singles until Ne-Yo came and he's been dominating the game every since.

With female R&B artists, they need a Rap beat and no clothes on to compete and there can be five of them at the same time. No matter what, Beyonce is still going to be on top until she retires-yes she said she wanted to retire at 30 or if Rihanna comes and takes her spot which she may since Rihanna is 18 and new fresh meat. All her beats are Pop anyway, especially this latest single, "Don't Stop The Music," taking Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" which as sampled from another song, but nontheless, Michael Jackson solo career was Pop music...maybe except Invisible. That song he sampled from was probably because I don't know, is Pop too.

When artists like KEM, India Arie, Angie Stone and such come out, they're music is considered Neo-Soul R&B or Adult Comtemporary R&B which is stupid because it's R&B no matter what and we, the young generation can relate to their music as well as we can relate to Ashanti's music (using Ashanti is kind of a bad example I know, but you get the point).

In conclusion, I don't think R&B is dead, it's just classified differently. Check out the music setions in each store you go to and see how they classify the music. Every store does it differently and so does every online store and these music lables, Billboard charts, etc. Phew!

You are 100% right about the pop-R&B connection.... tho im not TOTALLY sure about soul & R&B being the same.... im sure there are some distinct differences, just like hip hop & rap are apart of the same basic genre but they have distinct differences.... its mostly related to subject matter

but i have seen the different classifications on online music stores..... but the root classification is R&B/Soul, then the branch offs begin

R&B is still dead to me....though you may have classified into different genres and etc......to me there is still no quality R&B outside of Neo-Soul artists........outside of Neo-Soul is Pop.........because like Jak said it Branches from R&B and that shit fell off after the 90's!

R&B isn't dead you just have to go lookin for it (someone said that earlier). R&B and Soul are kind of the same. like crasyjak said it like what hip hop is to rap. Neo -Yo is pretty good I fuck wit J holiday(and he is from DC) Rahiem Devon(his mixtapes are straight fire and he is from DC too), Keisha Cole she's tight, Alicia Keys, India Arie, Floetry. EVERYONE HAS BEEN SAYING THEY LOVE LYFE JENNINGS BUT WHAT ABOUT MY MAN JOHN LEGEND.
If you turn on the radio you can still hear good R&B but it is not the same for hip hop

R&B is definitely not dead yet, and I agree with redboi.

There's still a lot of good R&B artists out there who deserve more props.
