Not really a question or major topic but just wishing those who celebrate this long weekend a Happy Easter, and enjoy the long weekend off if you do observe Good Friday as well.

If you wish post your plans or traditions on this long weekend. I'll be fasting and reflecting tommorrow, then having a small Easter dinner Sunday. Take care!

It's a Pagan and Christian festival;
Pagan = end of winter and new life, hence the eggs, and of course it's the rabbits breeding season
Christian = defeat of death, and thus new life

No, the Christian meaning is Jesus' resurection. On good Friday ppl think about his death, and Sunday is when ppl think about the resurection.

Good friday is an annoying public holiday which disrupts my work schedule because all the shops are closed and therefore deadlines are also screwed over

Easter weekend is a time for a duck and lamb feast. Plus I get to eat lots of chocolate. It's a good weekend.

Why is Easter celebrated exactly?
Just a question on my mind for the past 10 years and no one seems to have an explanation.........
Why do we color and hide the eggs and place candy everywhere and what does the damn rabbit have to do with it..........Also, why is Jesus mixed up in this holiday?

Correct me if im wrong, but we celebrate easter because its the day that Jesus rose from the dead.
Good Friday is actually the day that Jesus was crucified and he died on the cross. so its supposed to be a solemn day of reflection on the sacrifice that he made for our sins.
And 3 days later Mary Magdalene saw that he rose again from the dead and he went up to God and became his right hand. this event also shows that he truly is the son of God. and the apostles scattered around the world to spread his word....

I don't know about the egg hunts and the rabbits but it is celebrated in the Western part of the world mostly...maybe as sum1 above me said>>>its a pagan ritual.

oh and when i was small my family and i used to watch movies that depicts Jesus' death on the cross every Good Friday and we pray the rosary....'The Passion of The Christ' is also a good film to watch on this day....and on Easter we go hear the mass and we visit friends and celebrate.>>>my family's roman catholic. :)
and we don't do the easter egg thing....

A bunch of people had already mentioned the Christian meaning behind it, and the Pagan origins have been mentioned, but haven't gone too in-depth.

The word Easter comes from a goddess of spring (her name was Eastre) and on the vernal equinox a festival was held in her honor.

The Easter bunny has origins in a rabbit spirit, which used to be known as the Easter Hare. According to some sources, long ago, children believed that rabbits laid eggs in the grass, hence the modern-day Easter egg hunts. Also, eggs symbolized new life, and spring/Easter is all about rebirth.

I'm an atheist so I don't celebrate Easter for religious reasons. It's a time to be with family for me.
