Black/white?
Black/white = color
You can be a black Australian Aborigines, a black East Indian, or a black Sub-Saharan African, etc. You can be a white European, a white Western Asian, a white South Asian-Indian, a white East Asian, etc.

African American?
African = geographic designation
You can be a white-brown Semitic North African, or a tan-brown Egyptian African, a brown-black Ethiopian or Sudan African, or a black Sub-Saharan African.

Asian American?

Asian = geographic designation
You can be a white Semitic, Eurasian, or Indo-European Western Asian (Arabs, Turks, Persian, etc), or a Caucasoid-Australoid South Asian (India, Bangledesh, etc), or a Mongoloid East Asian (China, Korea, Japan, Mongolia), or a Mongoloid-Australoid South East Asian (Phillipines, Thailand, Indonesia, etc)

Hispanic?
Hispanic = Anyone who speaks Spanish as their major or primary language.
Latino = Anyone from Latin America
Spanish = Anyone from Spain

So a Korean from Canada who speaks Spanish as his first language is technically "Hispanic," and a Japanese from Brazil who speaks Portuguese is technically "Latino."

Caucasian?
Ok, maybe this one isn't totally off. But it's annoying how they separate Spanish Caucasians from the rest of the group.

*I'm using the old Anthropological definitions for race, a physical expression of our genes. Mongoloid, Australoid, Caucasoid, Negroid.

Ethnicity is defined by ancestry, family kinship, and often language. (nowadays, language isn't as a good indicator since people are more globalized)

The problem with ethnicity is people keep changing its definition. I laugh when people start referring to Jews as an ethnic group.

If they can't get it right, then why do they even bother to have it? They call it race/ethnicity charts, but the options are neither race nor ethnicity. Most of them are geographic and heritage-cultural groups.

Why am I even concerned with this?

And again, does it really matter?

Btw, I am not sure, but the American census separate the "Filipino" race as one specific race. Did they change that?

Why indeed? Well, this is more or less random than the other topics in general discussion.

The Spanish are not Mexicans. Not all Africans are black. Asians are not the same.

Yes, it really does matter.

Uhh... An educated and sensible person would exactly know who is who and which is which. The Spanish are indeed not Mexicans, duh! And the reason for Egypt being so highlighted in World History books in American schools is to help us know that Egypt is indeed in Africa, and they are not so dark/black. =_= And since Im Asian, I know that Asians are not the same. Thus, for me, this is quite redundant.

And basically, making the whole American Census chart unneeded, and all discussions relating to it concerning NON-experts redundant. How many people do you think pay attention to such things?

Hah! Sensible and educated person...it's not so sensible since that many Chinese themselves think that Chinese is a race, or people thinking Jew is an ethnic group. Why did you bring up Egypt in particular?

All I'm saying is they should get the census chart right...because the last I heard, Chinese, Middle Easterners, etc are neither races nor ethnic groups.

Is it wrong to reach for a higher standard?

Why do you even give a damn ? I don't give a damn about anything unless it's staring me in the face, so you care about something so stupid ? Look for example, take 9/11, didn't care, didn't effect me,so I don't care, so why does everyone else care so much ? This chart dosen't effect you,it doesn't run your life, so why do you care so much ?

No, it is not wrong. I actually admire you for knowing all these things. Well, I hope they change it... someday.

It might not matter to me, you, and some others. But I believe that it has value and it is not stupid. It is your identity, how could it be stupid? Besides, such ideal discussions dont come about often, appreciate it.

The point is, this is a discussion forum. If you are here, you do care. If you don't give a damn, then leave, you are not welcome.

Oh ? I really don't care about it, even if it is my identity as you say, it does not directly effect me in a significant way, so i don't give a damn about it.

Aye, thanks - likewise. I hope you're right.

9/11 directly caused the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, causing even more massive debt for the US, redirecting US policy and focus away from the economy, thus indirectly causing the massive global fiancial crisis today.

The chart does affect you - because it encourages generalization of entire groups that are way off. Why aren't Middle Easterners considered Asian, even though they're in continental Asia? Hell if I know!

In UK, 'Chinese' don't come under 'Asian'. It's a separate single category right at the bottom!
Also, Koreans, Japanese, Vietnamese, Filipino, Thai, Mongolian, Cambodian, Malaysian, Indonesian...all go under 'Others' category!
