I want to know how and why gangs got started...particulry american gangs...why is it that when u join a gang and try to leave it, they kill u? do gangs have honor systems? Why do they use hand signs? Why r they so angry? Why do they sell drugs? answer these quesions and more...explain to me...what a gang is...and how it came to be...(this topic can also represent a split in the black community- your thoughs on that to) If gangs in other coutries r the same/ similar or different- i want your input on that to...compare and contrast them to American gangs if u can...Crips and Bloods- tell about them to... peace over war

I watched a few series from History channel or Discovery channel (I don't remember which one) dealing with gangs including origin and its evolution. For example the gangs in LA started out as ordinary people who belong to a particular minority. Of course at that time there is much prejudice going on and they are forced to be confined into their racial groups or cultural backgrounds to preserve their sense of belongingness. This is of course met with violence over the ages and soon they evolved into the most notorious gangs we have come to live by.

Drugs and money? I know that drugs made a LOT of money and most gangs fought for turf because more turf = more money. The hand signs is just used so people know which gang you from and if they should shoot you up. Too many questions but yeah just go watch a documentary, I don't know too much bout gangs I just know most of the ones where I use to live ended up in jail lol.

the first recorded gangs in american history were started by irish immigrants.

thats right, white folks started the first street gang in america!!

just so you all know, street gangs weren't originally formed for money, they were formed for protection and a sense of belonging. the oldest gangs really only resorted to petty crimes and extortion for money, they were mostly there to protect eachother.

gangs didn't really become profitable until the mid 80's, when crack first hit the streets. then all of the sudden there was a form of cocaine that was cheap enough for people in the ghetto to buy, and addictive enough to keep customers coming back. then the gangs started incorporating it into their own pracitces, and holding territory became a lot more competitive. where gangsters used to keep drug dealers off the street, the roles were switched, and the gangsters became primary source of drugs for the poor urban neighborhoods.
