Post Reply Basic Lesson 3: Ages :]

It'll be easier if you use the "Numbers Spoiler Alert" on the group's main page to understand this next part. ^^

I. What you do is just get the number and add sai on the end :
i.e [in example] :
・issai : 1 year old
・nisai : 2 years old
・sansai : 3 years old
・yonsai : 4 years old
・gosai : 5 years old.. etc. etc.

*the only age thats different is 20 years old which is hatachi the kanji stays the same though [二十才 or 二十歳]

II. The kanji for year [age only!] is ”才” or this "歳" both are correct but i just prefer the first one [才] because it's easier to recognize :3
if you want to use kanji for ages this is how it would look for the ages listed above :
・一才 or 一歳 [issai : 1 year old]
・二才 or 二歳 [nisai : 2 years old]
・三才 or 三歳 [sansai : 3 years old]
・四才 or 四歳 [yonsai : 4 years old]
・五才 or 五歳 [gosai : 5 years old]

III. Here's an example sentence :

・Question : 貴方は 何才ですか。[anata wa nansai desu ka?] "How old are you?/What is your age?"
Answer :私は 十六才です。[watashi wa juurokusai desu.] "I'm 16 years old"

* please let me know if you dont get this explanation and i'll edit it more so that others will understand it ^^

hahaha well, i would say good job to your teacher for teaching you the more specific one it's better that it's more specific than easy, but now you know another kanji for it ^^

1 years old could also be said as "issai". 10 is "jussai", 11 "juuissai", 18 "juuhassai"...and apparently 20 could be said as "hatachi". Although I guess it's easier for people to say it the other way because it's slightly difficult with the double consonants.

There's that other way of asking someone's age: "ikutsu desu ka"

Too bad the "-sai" kanji can't be any bigger. It looks like the katakana "o"

The kanji is alright for me, but it's missing that slightly extended curved diagonal bit at the top. I guess it's from having IE, lol
