Nepal people.. back then it was in between of India and China, near Tibet... I studied it in my Art class... That is why there are buddhas that looked indians and asians... Buddhism religion has spread and became known because of trading from country to country... Imagine Egypt (Africa), China, Mesopotamia, but it really spreaded mostly in Asia... In Thailand they have the sleeping buddha... and in Cambodia, Vietnam.... Buddha has MANY different kind of STATUES. I'll try to post it later from my book... Siddharta Gautama really lived... around 500 BC... he was a prince... decided to go outside the palace gates to see the real world... found there was a lot of people suffering, diseases, and injusticeness... He left the palace... took off his freakin heavy earrings (a sign of wealth) that was the reason why his earlobes were very stretched, he have a crane on top of his head which was a symbol of wisdom and the thing in between his forehead I forgot what it means... He wore white robes then stayed at a tree (tree of life) where he reflect, meditate, found true wisdom and the meaning of life... animals like deers come next to him... He also have Bodhisatvas I think was his followers, a protector (in Christianity it is like an angel).

front of book, Frames of Reference

back of the book.

The Bodhi tree. The first Buddha not shown in human form. Only aniconic references to his presence are made by objects important in his life. Bodhi means revalation.

Greek influence art of Buddha. Greco-Roman sculpture. 71/2 ft. regular fold patterns in the drape of his monks robe. Similar to Kouroi -> see Greek's "Cleobis and Biton". There are 32 Characteristics of Buddha.

1. earlobes are streched into long loops symbolizing heavy jewelry when he left the palace.
2. His head swels with unisha, a cranial knob indicates his great wisdom and divine energy.
3. a tuft of hair between his eyes, the urna or third eye, by which he sees the meaning of life.
4. His hair formed in "snail curls" that resemble the tight patterns in Persian hair and beards.

On top it says, Great Bodhisattva, from Cave 1, Ajanta, India, c.600-650 CE. Wall painting.

Mesopotamia art, brows connected like wings.

Lotus also can be found as art symbol in Egypt -> see Lotus columns.
