Dubs are terrible. English voice actors give shit about their jobs and put no effort into voice acting. They only care about what part they get for what famous anime and how much it pays. There is no soul in dubbing. Plus, dub voices are completely out of age context in most parts. The only exception that I have for dubs are pokemon, yugioh 5ds and gx, gurren lagann, cowboy bebop, and full metal alchemist. Subs will always be better than dubs, and that is the fact.

I for one love dubs, I only watched dubs first and never had a problem with them. I personally never wanted to watch a subbed anime, because the point of watching something is to listen and watch; not watch and read at the same time. Otherwise it's better to just read a book xD But also, lot's of times the text goes too fast and you'll miss something. One of the first times I watched a sub, I felt like I was in another world on an alien planet, because everyone was speaking a language I didn't know; it felt really weird. (Even though that is true cause I don't know Japanese and all) It was very weird for me :S I like to hear a language I understand I suppose. Although I have adjusted to it now though.

Dubs however are in your language so you don't have to worry about reading it, you can just sit, relax and watch.

I just prefer watching something where the voices are in a language I know, although subs are good for eating cause you don't have to worry about paying attention to what they're saying
The only subs I watch are for anime's that I know will probably not come in english, or that I really wanted to see them.

Agree, the culture of Japanese were gone after an Anime got dubbed.

Experiencing "the culture of Japanese" via anime is like experiencing food through looking at it. Personally, I watch anime for the experience of entertainment.

Early dubs = Uninspired script-reading actors plus terrible syncing.
New dubs = Exactly the same thing

There are some exceptions though, and I admit that dubbing is improving. Probably because it can't get any worse.
Then again, dubs gave us OVER 9000 and taking potato chips and eating them.

For those that are interested in dubs, Funimation just added a lot of titles to Netflix's Watch Instantly, and it appears many are in HD):

(Titles listed in a spoiler to save space for those not intererested).

what they did to Initial D is horrible, they exchanged the ost, THE OST!!! then again I only saw a little of it watching stage 3 until my ears imploded, then I changed back to Japanese... anyhow to the pages I read on there is no OVA of Gunslinger Girl, there is on Gunslinger Girls 2 though

Nowadays when music is changed, it usually is something pertaining to a licensing issue.

Although Netflix (and Funimation on their own video website) have it listed as Gunslinger Girl: OVA, it no doubt would be the Gunslinger Girl: Il Teatrino OVA, which came after that series. In fact, Funimation has "Il Teatrino" visible on the graphic when one clicks through to the video page.

I NEVER WATCH DUBS

The problem I have with english dubbers is that a lot of them have a dramatic tone that makes the characters cartoony and unrealistic.
More than half of the essence in the characters are completely lost. I think the biggest problem is that most english dubbers treat anime the same way they treat disney voiceovers. Therefore many of their voiceovers sound patronizing and aimed at a younger audience.

I've only tried Naruto with dubs, but that was awful enough to never do it again.

Any person that says all English dubs change the essence of the show are idiots. You have not seen all the hundreds of dubs, so you can't make that argument. Dub haters, how do you feel if you learned some of the Japanese creators actually feel that the English versions of their show is better in English than the original Japanese? There are equally annoying voices in the Japanese. The fact that I stopped watching Dragon Crisis! was because of Rie Kugimiya has the absolute most annoying voice I have heard in any anime dubbed/subbed.

I am of the very opinion that dubs should not be dismissed as an inferior form of watching Anime at all. Yes, there may be some which are not perfect, but has that ever stopped me from being an Anime fan who likes watching dubs? No way. Hey, I've even loved dubs that purists told me were abominable and even disliked some dubs people told me were perfect! In the end, no one is really right or wrong, it is simply their preferences.

Personally, whoever says that the Ghibli dubs are excellent, kudos to you. They are some of the best in business. I can't watch any of these movies in Japanese anymore. In particular, Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, and Whisper of the Heart are all solid, excellent dubs. Castle took some flak from purists for making its leads into teenagers and adding in more dialogue, but I didn't find either "fault" so grating that it took me out of the film. Especially when its supporting cast was so much fun and the rescore was just brilliant. In general, the performances were very good, and I couldn't think of any that I disliked. Ditto with Kiki and Totoro.

But that's not to say they're the only dubs worth watching and everything else should be avoided like the plague. I've found dubs that I liked a whole lot, such as Lodoss, Slayers, Nadia, Outlaw Star, His and Her Circumstances, and yes, Fullmetal Alchemist as well as Wolf's Rain and many many others... the list goes on and on.

I can't understand Japanese at all, and frankly, I don't think it's very fair to hold the dubs up to the native language track, especially if the dub in question is done very well. And by that I don't mean that it has to be every bit as good as the original or better, just listenable in its own right. That's why I try to listen to the dubs for what they are, not as yardsticks to a language track I cannot understand.

people who dismiss dubs never really gave them a chance to begin with. usually declaring them all as bad because of a bad dub they've seen.

personally if i had to choose between sub or dub I'd choose dub. though to be fair this applies only to anime, live action has to be sub just cause it always sounds weird dubbed and should be held to a different standard then animation.
