Posted 10/30/07
I don't follow a religion but many friends/family do, it doesn't seem controlling to me.

i don't have any beliefs,so i personally view religion as far 2 controlling.4 a while i went 2 church and was ok with it.now church is a forced thing 4 me,and i realize that i know more about it than when i was younger...reading the bible helped that a bit...i just kinda came 2 realize how pushy it all seems...but this is just my opinion,so i know that not every1 will agree with it.please,if ur religious, try not 2 b offended.i have christian friends,so i try not 2 say anything 2 dejecting of religion.

Religious institutions are controlling, religion isn't. From the way I see it, religion is only as serious as you make it. For instance, the Catholic Church is very strict on its traditions. Besides, I don't like having someone else telling his interpretation of my religion, its too personal.

well i used to be buddis, then christian, then baptis, i think there's always sum kinda flaw in any religion, also, alot of these religion out here is hating on each other for no reason, n, catholic, i always wondered, why it is that it has been around for so long, then the Bible, it is really true word of god? i mean it's been translated, re copied , n back then when scholar write or copy books they have to do it a certain way that they are allowed to so, would the Bible have been changed since the original, if the original does exsist, w/e meh , to keep it short * THERE IS NO BAD RELIGION, JUST BAD PEOPLE*

Religion controlling in general? No, it shouldn't be. However, the amount of control that religion has will depend on how much the family/parents stress their religion towards their children. I'll use my personal experience as an example of this scenario.

I can basically define myself as a Catholic, even though I pick and choose how much of the Bible I should base my moral values on..........and also, I'm Filipino. In most Filipino families, the parents would stress traditional Catholic values to their children to the greatest degree possible. As a result, most Filipino children (whether native Flips or Flip-Americans) end up growing up into moderately or possibly highly religious Catholics with conservative values. That's the case with most of my Filipino friends, but that's them and not me.

In my case, out of both of my parents, my mom was the one that tried to make great strides to stress the Catholic religion to me & my younger siblings as we were all growing up. However in my father's case, he didn't bother to stress religion on any of us because throughout his childhood, he's been confused about his religion. This is due to the fact that my grandmother is raised Catholic while my grandfather is raised by another branch of Christianity (probably the Iglesia ni Cristo religion). So throughout my father's life, his religious values have been conflicted within.............so he doesn't even bother to stress, even though both my mother and him have conservative philosophies. I can also add on to the fact that my views in my religion were molded even more after I took Philosophy in my freshman year of college. Thru Philosophy, it allowed me to organize my train of thought, and it allowed me to decide what things to believe in & what things to take with a grain of salt.
As a result of this, I'm somewhat opposite of my Filipino friends in terms of how much I stress the Catholic religion in my life.
My personal basis on the Catholic religion in my life are that I believe in Jesus and God, and that I take 75% of the Bible like a grain a salt. I mean, I learned in Philosophy and thru my own personal research that the actual Bible that all Christians abide by today was actually a filtered/diluted/edited version of the original book by the Roman Catholic Church during the time that Byzantine was emperor of the Roman Empire. And basically, the Bible was edited in order to suit the values and philosophies of the Romans. So basically, the modern-day Bible is really a combination of the original core Christian values and some core Roman values.

Eh, I can go on and on about this............but the fact of the matter is, I don't let religion control my life........I just use it as a basic foundation to shape who I truly am.

Yes, I do think its controlling which is why I'm not associated with any of them. I want to be myself and live my own life. I don't want to waste the time I have by pretending to be something that I'm not.

no.never think of religion as a hindrance for anything.
thankful actually that i have something i really believe in.
but yeah.that's just my opinion.
different people would think differently.
and religion is sometimes a sensitive issue for some people.

Religion is controlling by its very nature, its only because most of the people in Britain are atheists these days that its control is weakening.
