Yeah, people say that American cars are all muscle and no handling, flash and no substance. Well that's true because unlike the rest of the world; they don't focus on practicality of the car they focus on the marketability of the car.

This is why 25 years ago (its probably still so now) if you hopped into a Camaro, your world would mostly likely end in a fiery ball of flame. Even now no American model is in the top ten safest cars in the world.

Well that may change soon, because it seems that the United States may have caught up with the rest of the world when Ford released what is called the "safest car in America", the 2008 Ford Taurus.

So what do you guys think, do you think its up to the task? Do you think the United States that can make safe cars?

Why change a good thing? They got power and that's they're known for. I'm somewhat conservative about cars...

American auto makers think that size + weight = a safer vehicle.

LOL thats true. you have to scrape the honda off with a shovel and all the hummer need is a new paint job for its bumper.

I don't think so really. I heard Hondas or Subarus are suppose to be safe cars, but I'm not entirely sure on that. My answer would be no lol

Overall, I think they're average.

But in the viewpoint of the big 3:

Ford: doing the best
GM: doing well
Chrysler: doing surprisingly well but could do better

American cars are safe, I think that explains why they are so big and ugly looking (with a few exceptions). What I think American cars need is more horse power, more elegant design and major improvements to the interior - otherwise BMW, Infiniti and the rest will continue to have the upper hand. Ford's Lincoln is doing a good job and GM's Cadillac and Buick (yes, the old people brand) are trying too. The CTS Coupe for example, is a really nice car, but it's underpowered, the CTS-V on th other hand, is an amazing car in all ways. I guess what I'm trying to say is that American car manufacturers have what it takes to compete against entry level German cars, have the power to compete with the likes of Mercedes' AMG and BMW's M, but don't offer anything for those wanting a powerful car without the AMG or M power - like a 335i for example.

For the most part American cars are built to meet, but not exceed Gov't requirements. So, I'm sure there's room for improvment, but most folks probably don't buy a car because of its safety rating.

The car is only as safe as the person driving it. You nail a tree doing 100 plus MPH more then likey your going to die. Unless your drunk then there a chance you will live.
