Since I love the idea of defying the basic idea behind certain genres, it is not surprising that a certain question came into my head: mixing the magical girl genre with horror. So far I have seen one manga that comes close to doing this; Reiko the Zombie Shop. In this manga the main character is a high school girl who has the power to zombify the dead. She mainly uses her powers to solve murder cases, for a nominal fee.

So, here's my closing question: can the magical girl and horror genres be successfully mixed?

Can they be mixed: yes. Should they be mixed? Definately. I think it especially works because the magical girl genre is already heavy on self/life sacrifice. Chrono crusade comes close maybe, where Rosette spends her life force to allow Chrono to battle. More necromance!

Oh interesting topic.

Yeah I'd say so. Every now and then you run into the "anti-magical girl," you know, the one all decked in out in black. So a necromancer would be just about as reasonable as anything else.

Although she is not a necromancer, Fate from Nanoho certainly looks the part, what with the black cape and the scythe:

I think it would be nearly impossible to have the main protaganist be a necromancer, unless it was a gooft comedy anime (like dokuro chan).

Yes.. It just depends on how you bend the storyline.. For example:

Masters of the Occult have been storing their knowledge over the years and have decided to pass on their knowledge to a child who has lost a random family member.. They give her the power to control spirits of the dead.. In order for her to bring back that lost family member, she must use her powers of being able to summon dead spirits to stop the corruption of holy avatars..

I came up with this right on the spot..

P.S. Fate may wear black but she's not a Necromancer.. A Necromancer uses magic to summon dead and evil spirits to do their bidding..

Well stupid enough to break up with the cliches we see in every anime nowadays. Only problem: it will become a greater cliche, oh well...

A Complex Proof using an abstract formula to prove that math can be made fun of in this way
