LATEST NEWS/ INFO

Events prior to the main storyline

In a flashback, "Syaoran" is revealed to be the son of individuals also named "Sakura" and "Li Syaoran". He was sent to Yuko by his father because his mother had a prophetic dream of someone waiting for him. His mother pays as a price the 'star wand', in order to allow him to travel to Clow Country, and he then meets Princess Sakura there. He was told by Yuko he would only be able to remain there for seven days before he was transported back to his world: after that, Syaoran would have to make a choice. Syaoran always gives his name as "Li Syaoran", which is his father's name. His sword is also revealed to be his father's original jian sword. His father gave it to him before he was sent to Clow Country.

Nadeshiko and Fujitaka (Sakura's parents) claim that both "Syaoran" and "Sakura" will change each other's destiny

Later, Sakura takes Syaoran up to the top of the castle, to show him the stars. Her eyes suddenly go blank, and her body rises up in the air - she hears the sound of bells coming from the ruins (similar to what happened in chapter 1).She warns him it's too dangerous, and to stay back; although Syaoran doesn't know what it could be that is dangerous.

Syaoran is aware that something bad is going to happen on the 7th day, and he has been granted permission to go to the cleansing grounds with Sakura on that day; in order to protect her. The cleansing grounds have permitted his presence, so he is able to enter - even though nobody else (not even the priest) is allowed in the 7th day.

During the seventh day, Syaoran enters the Ruins with Sakura, who seems to remember nothing of the previous night's vision. When inside the Ruins, Fei Wang opens a rift and attempts to abduct Sakura, but the water protects her. Syaoran runs towards Sakura, yelling at her to open her eyes, before screaming her name. Syaoran suddenly remembers how he cannot touch her, and hesistates. Fei Wang tells Syaoran that his moment's hesitation right there decided his path from here on. Black "goop" forms the shape of wings around Sakura, sealing the "Seal of Death" onto Sakura. When the seal fully covers her body, 'that moment will be the last'. A furious Syaoran asks him as he has to do on Sakura and uses his spell Raitei Shourai on Fei Wang. Fei Wang quickly counters, knocking Syaoran to the ground using just a finger. At the end of the chapter, Syaoran is seen disappearing back into his home world, uttering Sakura's name.

In chapter 197, Syaoran was returned to Yuko's shop dying (he used his strength to stop the dimension traveling). Syaoran was cured by Yuko with a price which his father paid. But then, Syaoran wished to go to Clow country to remove the seal of death in Sakura. Yuko's price is that Syaoran would never go back to Japan while there exists none in Clow Country who can cross dimensions. At the end of the chapter, Syaoran agreed thus, leaving his family and the happiness he is bearing.

When Syaoran arrives back in Clow Country, he is reunited with Sakura. Seven days have past since the cleansing finished. Beginning to tear up after seeing the seal on her chest, he grabs her hand and pulls her close into an embrace. Sakura blushes madly, but eventually hugs him back. They are shown holding hands, until Syaoran has a talk with Sakura's mother, and Sakura goes off to tell her father of Syaoran's arrival. Although Sakura's mother explains that she can only see the seal of death, Syaoran claims that he can see it as well - most likely what Fei Wang Reed intended. Enraged with Fei Wang Reed, Syaoran states that he will search the country for a way to remove the seal, and won't allow Sakura to die.

The next flashback occurs seven years after. Syaoran returns from visiting another country, trying to find a way to remove the seal. The scenes shown here are almost identical to the scenes shown in the first chapter, but instead of picking up a photo of Fujitaka, Syaoran picks up a photo of his parents, just as Sakura arrives. The two talk for a while, with Sakura about to tell Syaoran something, before deciding that it can wait until her birthday. As she leaves, Syaoran notices the black wings have almost fully grown.

In the next chapter, Syaoran went to the castle. He was chatting with the royal family when Sakura came(she had done the cleansing). Just then, Sakura was enveloped by her black wings. Syaoran and Sakura's mother were the only ones who saw the black wings, so Sakura's mother stopped the time to give Syaoran enough time to stop the seal. Syaoran wishes that he could go back and change the past by taking Sakura's hand before Fei Wong could engrave the seal. Fei Wong appears and claims he can grant that wish, but before he can, the circle he is using (Clow Reed's magic circle) changes into the magic circle of his mother. Yuuko appears and states that while she can grant that wish, it would be a grave sin to do so. Syaoran would be able to change Sakura's fate but he would lose his freedom, be placed in grave danger and would be forced to watch only. Syaoran agrees to the conditions and his time is rewound. At this point, Watanuki is created to 'replace' Syaoran as the son of Sakura and Syaoran Li. Syaoran is then taken by Fei Wong, who states that if he cannot use either Syaoran or Watanuki, he will simply create another Syaoran.

It was believed that because of this revelation, Syaoran's parents were killed, as Watanuki believes his (and thus Syaoran's) parents died to protect him, but this was reversed when the fortune teller (from volume 2 of xxxHolic) phones Yuko with the news that Syaoran and Sakura still live - and have moved to an alternate world, waiting for their sons to return to them.

Syaoran in xxxHolic

Syaoran appears in xxxHolic in two forms, a clone self and his real self. The clone self appears throughout both the xxxHolic and Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle timelines via Mokona, who acts as a communication apparatus for Yūko.

The real Syaoran enters the xxxHolic manga storyline in Volume 9, when he visits Yūko after being freed by Xing Huo. In order to travel to the world where his clone is currently located, Syaoran pays with "the relationship", "the freedom" and "the time" (aka the time he spent in captivity, and the relationship with Sakura paid by the other Syaoran). It is later revealed that Syaoran was one of three people who paid a price (i.e. his freedom and time) to Yūko in order to save Watanuki's life after he had fallen out of a window.

In Chapter 140, Watanuki realizes he cannot remember his parents' names, and holds his head in pain, in the exact same way as Syaoran in Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle. Syaoran is also shown telling Watanuki, "Don't disappear."

In Chapter 146, a hand was hovering behind Sakura. Watanuki runs towards her, and the real Syaoran enters, indicating that that hand was the real Syaoran's hand. He comments that it is a dream, when suddenly, cherry blossoms begin to blow rapidly. A second hand appears, and before Watanuki is able to run to Sakura, the cherry blossoms slowly cloud his vision. The real Syaoran, as he holds Sakura, says to Watanuki, "No matter how painful it might be... I'll do everything in my might! So please..." Unfortunately, Watanuki does not hear the rest as he awakens in his own world.

In Chapter 174 of Tsubasa, it is revealed that Syaoran says, "So please... you, too, act according to what you believe in!"

In Chapter 181 of Tsubasa, it was revealed that Watanuki paid for the price to know the location for both of the Sakuras, his price was his memories of his past. That's why when he was in the Dream World with Sakura's clone soul he forgot his parents' names when Sakura asked something about his parents. Watanuki did this before the start of the timeline of xxxHolic, and, as Yuuko said, he seems to have done it "for the sake of two futures".

In Chapter 201 of Tsubasa, during Syaoran's flashback explaining his travel in time in order to save Sakura (among other concepts), a key piece of information is revealed about the relationship between Syaoran and Watanuki. According to the chapter, Watanuki was created in order to fill the time Syaoran turned back and to fill in the void left by the relationships that Syaoran paid as his price to travel back in time. Watanuki is, in essence, "another Syaoran", as it is said by Fei Wong Reed to Syaoran that "He is no brother. He is you yourself." Watanuki becomes the son of Syaoran's true parents, as Syaoran's relationship with them was sacrificed. Fei Wong Reed says that the "distortion" between Syaoran and Watanuki would cause pain to both Syaoran's parents and Watanuki himself; however, Yūko contradicts him by saying that the future has yet to be ordained.

There is a contrast between "Syaoran" and Watanuki in that when entering Yuko's shop, Watanuki gives his real name (and hence birthday, (四月一日 , Watanuki)is written as April first), which in Clamp lore offers Yuko control of his destiny, whereas "Syaoran" gives a fake name. The scenes where they meet Yuko are very similar in most other respects (i.e Yuko's outfit, Maro and Moru's behaviour). Likewise, the scenes of both Watanuki and Syaoran recovering in Yuko's bed after their respective accidents are visibly similar.

Clow Reed - In the manga, Chapter 165 hints Watanuki is a distant relative of Clow Reed. In Chapter 202 of Tsubasa, Fei Wong Reed mentions that Watanuki looks like Clow when he was young. Given that Watanuki's parents are Syaoran Li and Sakura Kinomoto, this would make him a direct relative of Clow Reed.

WATANUKI

Existence

Volume 12 - 13 of the manga deals with the mystery surrounding Watanuki. Volume 12 already hinted that he is falling asleep more and dwelling in the dream world. In Chapters 143 and 144, Watanuki admits to being bothered by the fact that he could not remember details of his life including his parents' names, his school year, and anything about people he meets outside of the shop besides Dômeki and Himawari. Nor is he ever seen eating or remembering eating. It is revealed in Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle that Watanuki gave his memories to Yūko as the price to protect and help the travelers as well as to help locate both Sakura. It is revealed by Yūko in Chapter 157 of xxxHolic that both Watanuki's and the clone Sakura's memories are sealed in black Mokona's left earring (Watanuki's memories of his parents, Sakura's memories of Syaoran). Not only is his memory of his past erased, but so is his memory of the exchange. After expressing doubts about his humanity, Yūko then assures him that he is in fact human, "like that boy [Syaoran]", and shares a strong bond with him.

In Chapter 201 of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, during Syaoran's flashback explaining his travel in time in order to save Sakura (among other concepts), a key piece of information is revealed about the relationship between Syaoran and Watanuki. According to the chapter, Watanuki was created in order to fill the void left by Syaoran turning back time. Syaoran paid for this by offering the relationships he formed in his past. In order to fill this void, Watanuki was created to make those relationships that Syaoran would have made. Watanuki is, in essence, "another Syaoran," as stated by Fei Wong Reed. Watanuki becomes the son of Syaoran's true parents (Sakura and Syaoran from Cardcaptor Sakura), as Syaoran's relationship with them was sacrificed as payment. Fei Wong Reed says that Watanuki was not meant to exist, but does so now because of the distortion between the dimensions. He states that Watanuki symbolizes that the single path of the future has split into two and that the "distortion" between Syaoran and Watanuki would cause pain to both Syaoran's parents and Watanuki himself as well as everyone around Watanuki; however, Yūko contradicts him by saying that the future has yet to be determined. She states that Watanuki's relationships will anchor his existence. Fei Wong Reed also states that the diverging timelines that allows Syaoran to try to save Sakura will disappear if Watanuki disappears as well, prompting Syaoran to exclaim to Watanuki "not to disappear."

Syaoran - Syaoran is Watanuki's 'other' self. It is indicated that the futures of both Watanuki and the Syaorans of Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles are closely intertwined. He met the clone of Syaoran in Volume 1 of Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles as well as xxxHolic, and in Chapter 119 of xxxHolic, Watanuki was able to see a short glimpse of the real Syaoran. Also, Sakura, after meeting Watanuki in a dream, states that Watanuki is very much like Syaoran. In Chapter 140, the real Syaoran asks him "not to disappear" when Watanuki blacks out. In Chapter 168 of Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles, Syaoran tells Watanuki that "You and I are closer than anyone else." Then in Chapter 181, Yuko reveals that Watanuki already paid a price so Syaoran and the others could find both the original Sakura and her clone. He did this so he could pay back Syaoran and to let go of his haunting past. Again in Chapter 181, Yuuko says to Syaoran that a price has been already paid for a wish he wants by "the person who is closer to Syaoran than anyone else." In Chapter 201, of Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles, it is revealed that Watanuki is in fact a duplicate of Syaoran, born from Syaoran's wish to go back and save Sakura from death. He was created to have the relationships Syaoran gave up in order to save Sakura. He became the son of Syaoran's parents (Sakura and Syaoran from Cardcaptor Sakura), and holds all the relationships Syaoran should have had if he had not made his wish.

Watanuki's background concerning Syaoran and Syaoran Li and Sakura Kinomoto of Card Captor Sakura

In chapter 2 of Volume 3 (Chapter 30), there is a hint that Watanuki has a higher purpose to the xxxHolic universe than to simply do Yūko's handiwork and have his wish granted. In the final panel, Yūko cryptically remarks, "Watanuki is a good kid, didn't we both think that? Clow..." This strongly suggests that Watanuki's arrival at the store was expected and possibly prepared for, just as Clow Reed and Yūko prepared the Mokona's for the Tsubasa group's arrival and Sakura's staff (the Sakura of Cardcaptor Sakura) well in advance. Yūko also mentions that her store was created specifically for a future event. At this point, the audience can only speculate as to what said event is. It is also worth mentioning that Watanuki and Sakura share the same birth date: April 1. It can also be noted that Watanuki's given name, Kimihiro, means "Prophet", Yūko's fortune teller friend comments this is a good name for him. Watanuki also displays some precognitive abilities, notably the morning before he lost his eye he has a dream where half his field of vision is blocked out.

In later chapters of the manga Yûko allows Watanuki to experience things on his own to contribute to his growth and maturity. This was explained in Volume 8 of the manga, where the change of his character was shown when he saved the Zashiki Warashi from the Spider Queen. This was noticed by other supernatural beings as well.

Watanuki loses sight in his right eye after it was eaten by the Spider Queen/Ruler of Spiders in Volume 8, and Watanuki now shares half of his right's eye vision with Dômeki. Chapter 121's colored first page reveals that his eyes are now heterochromatic with one blue eye and one golden eye - gold being the color of Doumeki's eyes.

In chapter 152 of Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle, Watanuki is revealed to be in a dream world with Sakura's soul. Yūko states that he "will become a chance that will change the future again." When Kurogane asked who that person is, Yūko only said, "That's an unrelated story...for now", hinting that Watanuki may one day encounter the TRC group.

Another area of concern that Watanuki has now been lately falling into dream like state regardless any time of the day or circumstances, such as when Kohane's mother splashes hot water on him after he temporarily blacked out.

In Chapter 181 of Tsubasa, Yuuko reveals that Watanuki has sold his memories to Yuuko. She says, "...Also he paid me the same price in the past as the princess who traveled with you [memories]. And he has forgotten about his own past, the names of his parents... Even about having handed the price over to me. For the sake of the same wish you have [as Syaoran has]."

It xxxHolic chapter 157 it is revealed that Watanuki's wish to know both Sakura's locations in exchange for his own memories was granted before his "first" time entering the shop, meaning that Watanuki had already met Yuuko before the story began, but his memory of that event was erased. The feather removed from Kohane apparently contains Sakura's memory of Syaoran. The black Mokona's earring contains Watanuki's memory of making the wish to save two futures.

In chapter 158 the old woman fortune teller hinted that Domeki was the destined person she foresaw before that he would be friends with. She also stated that Watanuki has matured but as well as Yuuko changing in herself, the images later shows a postcard sent from Yuuko.

Also, in chapter 165 of xxxHolic, it is hinted that Watanuki's distant relative is Clow Reed. This could be true, as they look slightly the same. In chapter 201 of Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles, the final revelation of Watanuki's true identity is revealed via a flashback of Syaoran's. Syaoran, in order to save his Sakura, made a wish to turn back time to alter her destiny. However, such a powerful wish came at the cost of his freedom and happiness. Watanuki is born from this wish to fill in the "void" left by Syaoran's time traveling, and is described as his "other self" that was never meant to exist. Thus, he would fill in Syaoran's place as the child of his parents. Fei Wong Reed remarks that the child would bring suffering to their parents as well as himself, but Yuuko appears and assures Syaoran that the future has yet to be ordained.

Reed then imprisons Syaoran and attempts to grab Watanuki as well. However, Yuuko protects him, and remarks that although the two children share the same existence, they are ultimately two different beings. In an attempt to demoralize him, Reed then begins to remark on how Watanuki is a symbol of a dimensional distortion, and will bring misery to all those around him as long as he exists anyway. Yuuko interjects once again, stating that the bonds he will create will bind him to life. Syaoran also implores him to not disappear before Reed takes him away.

xxxHolic chapter 167 takes the revelation further by saying that the reason that Watanuki looks different is because Sakura and Syaoran had wished it. Yuko continues by saying that Sakura and Syaoran had died to save both Watanuki and Syaoran. Yuko also states that 'Kimihiro Watanuki' is not Watanuki's true name, rather it is a fabricated name so that Fei Wong is unable to locate him. Yuko continues by saying that when Syaoran fought the Clone in Tokyo, Watanuki was able to sense his determination without realising it, and as a consequence, had attempted to make himself disappear (by falling from the window), meaning that his accident was not merely down to Himawari's bad luck. Yuko says that Watanuki believes he should be alone, like Syaoran, and that it is this that draws spirits to him, but Yuko remarks that his attitude has changed.

In chapter 170, the fortune teller phones Yuko, saying that she was mistaken when she said that "your parents have passed safely over to the other side". Yuko agrees, saying that Syaoran and Sakua are in another world, waiting for Watanuki and Syaoran to return to them. This was also implied in an earlier chapter when Yuuko remarked "your name contains the promise your parents made to you, to look for you, that they would absolutely go to meet you."
