lloll...

Just a thought... if Anime = Japan .... Cartoon = America ...

Europe = ? ... Africa = ? ...

Not all cartoons are made in america!!! :p

It's the same as looking for the diference between "astronaut" and "cosmonaut"... there is none... one is an american designation and the other is a russian designation for the same thing...

Anime (a pop abriviation for animation) is just a designation when referring to japanese cartoons! In my native language we refere to cartoons (not just american... :p) as "Desenhos Animados" that literally means Animated Drawings.

I think some of you are confusing the difference between western and japanese drawing styles with the concept of an animation!!!

Yes. Animation from Japan might have better artwork (not always) and have better storylines (again not always) than animation produced in America. But in the end they are still "cartoons".

Anime= Animation (not Japanese animation) Trying taking the meaning from the country that made the word
Cartoon= Animation

They're both pictures that are on a screen no matter what its the same thing. I don't know why people think they're different. You people are and trying to think you're not watching a cartoon when you are.

Its like you're compering a Japanese video game from an American video game. Different Countries made it but they're both the same thing.

It's like comparing a cardboard box and a mansion; yes, you can live in both but its not the same thing
Anime being the mansion, cartoons being a cardboard box. Its just that much better. Period.

But in general yes they are the same thing but on differing quality.

Officially speaking, "anime" and "cartoon" are synonymous, but according to most people anime is Japanese animation (aka Japanese cartoons) and a certain veriety of non-Japanese cartoons that follow an anime-like structure, with art reminescent of anime and with the plot staying the same from ep to ep instead of just having a bunch of nonsense where the only thing that doesn't change every ep is the characters. How shows are cattagorized between cartoons and anime changes depending on who you talk to. (For example, I would call "Avatar" an anime, ever though it's American, but most people would disagree with me. I know I'm the minority.)

The word "anime" was born the same time Astro Boy was born in japan. And yes your right Anime was short term for Animation, but still during late 60's animation was described as Cartoon(ex. disney cartoon). Until Astro Boy was aired in japan then that became the factors between Japan animation and disney Animation.

your right with this
anime = animation
cartoon = animation

But generally speaking

Anime = japanese Animation
cartoon = america . that's all

A lot of American cartoons don't really have much of a storyline or are just about some sort of random thing. Also, the episodes are just random and most are made to make mostly children laugh.
Anime on the other hand, are well thought out of, sometimes deep, and have real storylines(most of the time) I much prefer Anime due to the reasons I just stated.

Nope they're not d' same ,, [ I think dat] cartoons are FuL of "KABLag" "KabOOM" & dey don't Use Violent langUage ,, In fact most of d' Scenes oNly Exist iN Our Minds [ In short Dey don't portray wAt is shown In D' reAl wUrld ] Dey are Meant 2 Entertain LitLe kids [ u can also watch it if u pLEs ],, & Most Importantly U don't NEd 2 Read subtittles [Nyahahahah ].. Whereas in Animes ,it Goes deeper on Every sequel [ or on Every episode] and Every scenes dat are shown can be violent [depending on d' Anime itsElf, It can Even Talk about Issues that arE sensitive or [ taboos] & for u 2 watch such anime's u Need 2 have u'r guardian's Permission [ Most of D' kids Nowadays don't do that,..hohohoh,,I'm One of them..Nyahahaha ,,].. but Der are also anime's dat doesn't tackles aboUt Serious stuff ,, [ like d' anime Lucky star w/c portrays d' daily life of girls in Japan, dat's wAt i think ].. and lastly allmost aL anime's Dat are shown requires subs ,[ for u 2 understand them , but if u understand Japanese Den dEr's no Ned for it ] unless it was translated in u'r own Language .,,

Family Guy and Simpsons are an example of "violent" language in American Cartoons, and everyone is drifting from the original question, "Is Anime and Cartoons the same" YES they are, plot twists, episodes and all those other things dont come into question, just look at Avatar, It comes from America but everyone puts it as an "Anime" when clearly, from what you guys are saying, it should be an American Cartoon, Before Astro boy 1960 when the word Anime came to life, it was all named Cartoons to entertain society. No matter how you look at it, THEY ARE THE SAME the only difference is the perception of the human anatomy from both countrys and the languaged used from the voice actors. Sigh, that took some time to write =.=

Also, if you can't realise that there the same....then you fail..im sorry but its true

I'd assume Cartoons have different names under different languages, just like Japan's anime.
