The word "anime" was born the same time Astro Boy was born in japan. And yes your right Anime was short term for Animation, but still during late 60's animation was described as Cartoon(ex. disney cartoon). Until Astro Boy was aired in japan then that became the factors between Japan animation and disney Animation.

Anime has been around long before Astro boy the 1st Known Anime is from 1917
and the "anime style" is based off Simplified versions of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs form 1937!
and the 1st full length fill coming out in 1944.

Anime is just a cartoon.

Cartoons and anime are pretty much the same. In Japan, anime means all types of animated stories, even foreign animations. In America and other nations anime specifically means cartoons from Japan.

I would say that they technically are the same. Doesn't mean to say that one or the other is bad though. 80s cartoons, anyone? (That was a time when Western animation was actually AWESOME.)

I don't like these kinds of threads. Differentiating between anime and cartoons is a pain in the ass, seeing as there are Korean 'anime' and Filipino 'cartoons'.

The fact that they both are animations or animated art is the only real. In reality cartoons were originally create for silly and whimsical entertainment aimed primarily at children. today cartoons are created either for the purpose of entertaining children or are used for adult comedy were silly whim is the rule. Anime is more mature and though it can be carried in a comic light it does not have to and that is the point. well done anime can draw upon the imagination to the point that would be impossible if not time consuming and incredibly expensive, in live action TV. it is like watching a well written Scifi or fantasy Novel and tends to draw in that crowd for that reason. anime is clean well done art. cartoons are expected to be sloppy. by today's standards though and you can thank anime for it the bar at drawing cartoons of any form for has risen to promote more professional and streamline art in many cases comparable to anime. at the same time the level art within anime has decrease some or has been replaced by less time consuming CG artistry. yet the japanese has show to be masters at blending both CG and hand art.

I always saw anime as a form of expression of ideas, perception of reality, qualities of people, etc.
cartoons on the other hand, are entertainment, and just entertainment.
Partly because cartoons are aimed more at children, even if you put depth into cartoons, they aren't gonna get it.
For anime though, the target audience is much wider, so using it as a platform for expressing ideas is obviously more effective, that's why you can see the variety of characters, settings, and scenarios found in anime. Even if you are just looking for entertainment at the cartoonish level, anime is still good (this is why I got into animes in the first place).

So, yes, they are both moving pictures, both animations.
but if you are talking about the qualities behind the moving pictures and animations, they are NOT the same.

IMO.
