True, but the electric engine drives its wheels, making it more of a Volt than a Cubic Inches vehicle ;)

Though they are first-generation try-outs, they're also more than 'just' a fashion statement. It's not impossible that in 50 years time, the majority of cars on the road would be electric. Let's not forget that the electric engine has BIG advantages over internal combustion: 100 x less complex, thus less failure-prone, and much much cheaper to build. Once the battery problems have been overcome, the floodgates may open.

Not that the electric car is THAT much of a novelty btw: the very first car to pass 100 kph / 60 mph was actually an electric... in 1899.

They actually stunted the research and growth of electric cars. The base tech has been around for quite a while.
