One of the world's biggest fashion galas, the 2008 China Fashion Carnival, will open this month with a series of interactive programs and a host of stars including Taiwanese singer Jay Chou.

The fashion carnival, held annually in Shanghai by local TV channel Channel Young, gathers stars, top-notch fashion designers and critics from home and broad.

This year's carnival features a theme gala, fashion forum and exhibition of Chinese fashion magazine covers over the past 30 years.

Organizers revealed that Taiwanese singer Jay Chou and 80 other domestic and foreign celebrities would attend the awards gala on November 1.

The gala aimed to pay tribute to people who have made big contributions to China's fashion, philanthropy and culture. Dragon TV and Channel Young said they would broadcast the event live. Cinemanila reels 10 : "Scorsese,Gong Li, Johnnie To In The Flesh?,"
Friday October 17, 2008 Philippines

business mirror
Written by Totel V. de Jesus

FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA’s first film after a decade of silence. Lav Diaz’s recent eight-hour opus, as well as Takashi Miike’s. Martin Scorsese and Gong Li in the flesh? And so with the arrival of Michel Gondry, director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind?

These are just some of the highlights of the ongoing Cinemanila International Film Festival (CIFF) at the Gateway Cineplex 10. Marking its 10th year, the festival opened on October 16 with Johnny To’s Sparrow, which will have reruns in the following days. To is Hong Kong’s famous iconoclastic director, whose works helped shape the films of Quentin Tarantino and the legions of Tarantino wannabes.

Last year the presence of Tarantino alone made the 9th CIFF the fiesta for all film buffs. Attendees came from nearby countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan, Taiwan and as far as Down Under. They flew in and made the Gateway Cineplex their second home.

Among the most attended films last year was the Philippine premiere of Control, which tells the last years of Ian Curtis, iconic founder of the seminal but short-lived new-wave band Joy Division (most famous hit “Love Will Tear Us Apart”).

It was a feat for Cinemanila because Control had its world premiere in Cannes in May 2007. Cinemanila was held in August, making it the second world premiere for Control prior to its regular screenings during the “ber” months in the UK and the US. Cinemanila founder and overall “in-control” main man Amable “Tikoy” Aguiluz was able to do that for the Filipino audience.

Another milestone was the honoring of the much-overlooked pioneering film producer Cirio Santiago, whose works Tarantino also acknowledged as very influential to his. Santiago died in September this year and the recognition given by Cinemanila was utterly timely. He is honored with another special tribute in the ongoing festival.

What makes the annual Cinemanila worth attending are the never-to-be-shown-commercially and, thus, never-to-be-pirated gems from the vibrant local art-film community and abroad.

Among the not-to-be-missed titles in this year’s Cinemanila is Diaz’s recent opus, the eight-hour-long Melancholia, which won grand prize in the Orizzonte Section in recent 56th Venice International Film Festival. Its last scenes were shot on a rainy Saturday at the riverbanks of nearby Marikina City, a few hours before a storm came in and water from the river flooded the set.

This year to be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award is playwright-poet-editor-biographer Jose “Pete” Lacaba Jr. He is known for his nonconformist adherence to excellence in his works as scriptwriter.

Aguiluz said all the films directed by Lino Brocka that were shown in the Cannes Film Festival were written or cowritten by Lacaba. These are Jaguar (cowritten with Ricky Lee), Bayan Ko: Kapit Sa Patalim (which will close the CIFF on October 29) and Orapronobis.

Beyond the awards, there are film titles worth lining up for despite the stormy season. Notable are Sukiyaki Western Django (which has cameo appearance of Tarantino) by Japan’s surreal rock-and-roll director Takashi Miike, and Youth Without Youth by Francis Ford Coppola (his first after a 10-year hiatus), which is about a language and philosophy professor contemplating suicide.

Also must-sees are Blind Pig Who Wants To Fly from Indonesia; Diving Bell and the Butterfly (Best Director winner in the 2007 Cannes Film Festival and the Golden Globe Award for Julian Schnabel) from France; Love of Siam (described as Bangkok’s version of Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros) from Thailand; Lucky Miles (about Iraqi and Cambodian refugees trapped in Western Australia); and Genghis Khan: To The Ends of the Earth and Sea from Japan. Filipino-Australian actor Kenneth Moraleda (Lucky Miles) will grace the festival.

Aguiluz assured that this year there will be no technical problems and last-minute changes in schedules because most of the films are in DVD format and they came straight from the recently concluded Pusan International Film Festival. As of the usual party poopers, the moralists at the censors’ board, Aguiluz assured there will be no problems because—in his words—“the government is our partner now.”

He could be referring to the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Film Development Council of the Philippines, which will shell out the more than P1 million worth of cash prizes. And like in the past two years, the awarding ceremony will be held in Malacañang Palace.

Aguiluz’s teaser: “Who knows, Gong Li and Martin Scorsese might show up?”

Dubbed Dekada Cinemanila, this year’s festival runs until October 29 at Gateway Cineplex 1, Araneta Center, Quezon City.

For information and screening schedules: www.cinemanila.org.ph or call 440-8812.

"JoongBo in a flash"
Thursday, October 16, 2008

Another day with very little updates from me. Is it just me or is this week just really SLOW?

1) Hwang Bo is participating in an autumn special concert, together with other singers such as Solbi, DBSK, FT Island, DJ Koo, Wonder Girls, Crown J as well as many others. This is to be shown on MNet, on the 16th at 7 p.m. Korean time. (Yayy!)

2) Another picture of Hyun Joong's Converse Ad. He looks kinda strange trying to feed a duck milk... Hmmm...

Will edit this post if I find anything else interesting!

P/S: It's finally Thursday.. When is Sunday coming again??

Hyun Joong: "The violin interests me"
Thursday, October 16, 2008

SS501 leader, Hyun Joong, has fallen for the violin.

Hyun Joong has been practicing the violin for his role as Rui in the upcoming KBS2 drama, Hana Yori Dango. As his role is one of a wealthy handsome man who is a member of F4, he is currently practicing the violin and will also be undergoing golf and horseback riding lessons, to fit in with the needs of the character.

His agency stated that he has been training his acting as well as going for classes to learn the violin, and because of his background with the guitar, it was easier for him with the violin as they were both similar. His instructor was also amazed with his progress after only seven sessions. They also stated that although the filming for the drama is scheduled to start soon, he is currently busy with WGM therefore he will learn horseback riding and golf when the drama starts.

SS501 were also scheduled to resume their activities in Japan in February next year, however, the shooting for the 24 episode drama is expected to carry on until March. The Japanese side would be understanding of this, as they too have high expectations for the drama.

"Lettuce Couple sponsored with a karaoke set"
Friday, October 17, 2008

Muize brought this to my attention, apparently the Lettuce Couple has been sponsored with a karaoke set for their home. This was seen to be an essential for the couple as they are both singers. The set can be seen in the pictures above, as well as their wedding photos and other ornaments that they share as a couple. Missing things: her poster above the piano, his guitars and his hats. Feels a bit empty without those bits there, huh?

"Hyun Joong and Hwayobi were initially supposed to be a pair"
Friday, October 17, 2008

It was announced that Hyun Joong and Hwayobi were intially meant to be paired together.

The both of them are currently participating in WGM, Hyun Joong as one half of the Lettuce Couple and Hwayobi as the newly added wife of Hwan Hee.

Jeon Seung Ho PD said that the original partners for WGM were actually Hyun Joong and Hwayobi. This was because they had initially thought that a couple with the 4D concept would have been interesting to watch.

However, he said that they finally decided that if the both of them were partnered together they would have not have been able to showcase their individual charms, and Hyun Joong was then partnered with Hwang Bo.

"Jin Akanishi and Maki Nishiyama Caught on a Date?,"
Friday October 17, 2008 Japan

This week's issue of FRIDAY magazine reports that KAT-TUN member Jin Akanishi recently went on a driving date with model Maki Nishiyama. Earlier this month, Akanishi picked up Nishiyama at her apartment in a minivan, and a reporter was able to capture the pair on camera as they drove off.

About a month ago, FRIDAY reported that Akanishi had dinner at a steakhouse with a "model-like beauty," not realizing at the time that it was Nishiyama. The two may have developed a relationship after Nishiyama appeared on "Cartoon KAT-TUN" last year.

Akanishi's management at Johnny's Jimusho stated that the two are just friends, while Nishiyama's agency declined to comment.

Nishiyama later wrote about it on her blog, amused that she had been described as only "model-like" even though she is an actual model. She acknowledged that she had been spotted with Akanishi, but she emphasized that the two are good friends and are not dating.

Wu Zun: "Pretty Fighter,"
Friday October 17, 2008 Singapore

Pretty FIGHTER
Taiwanese heart-throb Wu Chun earns praise for doing own stunts
By Maureen Koh The New Paper

NOT everyone was optimistic about his first major movie role in the latest adaptation of the classic, Butterfly Lovers. After all Wu Chun is better known for his pretty-boy roles in Taiwanese idol dramas such as Romantic Princess, Hanazakarino Kimitachie and Tokyo Juliet - in which looks matter more than acting. He is also part of the popular Taiwanese boy band Fahrenheit, known for its boyish good looks and cheery pop tunes.

The heart-throb, who was in town yesterday to promote his new film, disclosed that it was a role he had to fight hard for. Wu Chun, 29, said: 'I've always wanted to act in a movie and I didn't want to miss the opportunity. And the moment was like now. It took more than a year before I finally landed the role.'

In the film, which opens in Singapore cinemas today, Wu Chun plays Liang Zhongshan, a senior at a martial arts school. He meets Zhu Yanzhi when her parents send her to the school to escape vengeance-seeking enemies. That role is played by Charlene Choi, who replaced her Twins' partner Gillian Chung, after the latter turned down the role. Gillian had gone on long leave after actor Edison Chen's nude photos of her were leaked online in the biggest scandal to rock Asian showbiz this year.

As this version of the classic is set in a pugilistic world, Wu Chun is involved in several action-fighting scenes - almost all of which he performed without using stuntmen. Wu Chun said: 'I insisted on performing my own stunts because I'm someone who prefers to do things myself. I always believe that if I can do it, I will.'

Even then, there were a few hairy moments. He recalled the day when they filmed a scene in which he had to jump from an inn - about three storeys high - into a river. A stuntman, who demonstrated the sequence, jumped into the water and nearly landed on a piece of stray wood. Wu Chun said: 'Luckily he managed to avoid an accident. Even after the crew had removed the wood, I could not help feeling apprehensive when I did the shot.' He did it in just one take.

Undaunted

Another difficult scene - and perhaps most unforgettable for Wu Chun - was the one in which he fights to take Yanzhi's body with him so that he could die with her. It took nearly a week to do the scene. Wu Chun said: 'We'd start from about 5 or 6pm and film till about 5am the next day.' It didn't help that the ground was wet and slippery as the scene was supposed to depict a wounded Zhongshan carrying his lover's body in the pouring rain. 'But when we finally got it right, all the hard work was worth it,' said Wu Chun.

His determination to take on risky stunts has earned him compliments from the film's martial arts director, Ching Siu-tung. He told the Hong Kong media: 'I've never seen a newcomer so willing to take on risks.' But Wu Chun confessed: 'I actually found the whole experience more exciting than tough. I'm very lucky that I had a wonderful crew to work with. 'What I've learned from this experience will definitely benefit me on another level in future.'

He acknowledged that his roles in idol dramas had given him an 'almost perfect' image. He said: 'Everything's all pretty and dandy - your make-up's in place, there are no loose strands of hair. 'Unlike in this film where I bleed from my wounds... and I look scruffy and sweaty from the fighting scenes.'

Wu Chun was also full of praise for Charlene, whom he said was easy to work with. He said: 'Even though she had more experience in doing films, she did not make me feel uncomfortable.' Charlene would readily offer him tips and advice which were unrelated to the movie. He didn't go into details. 'In this way, I didn't feel stressed,' said Wu Chun.

But despite the camaraderie, he said the most awkward scene they filmed was when he had to help Charlene wash her feet. 'It's a very intimate gesture... I mean, even as lovers, you may touch and caress each other's hands, but you won't really touch the feet,' said Wu Chun.

Asked to rate his overall performance in the movie, he skirted the question and said: 'I'm happy that I've been given this chance. But as with everything, there's definitely room for improvement. 'Since it was something I wanted very much and fought hard for, it was critical for me to do well.' He added that he wanted to prove it was not wrong for his company to allow him to take on the role and for director Jingle Ma to place his stakes on him. 'If I fail, I will lose face,' he said.

It seems fans will not be able to get any tickets for any upcoming Big Bang concerts for their November comeback.

YG explained that three (G-Dragon, Top and Seung Ri) of the five members fainted last year as a result of over working to fulfill their holiday schedule and they didn’t want to risk the health of their artists for another round of crazy busy schedules this year.

After wrapping up their “Number 1″ promotions in Japan this month, the boys will return to the motherland for another round of promotions.

The rest of the G-Dragon's spread for Numero Magazine has been released. You can see them HERE
