I love it! I’ve been watching Death Note, and just finished the 27 episode. (Please keep them coming!) Now, I know what you’re thinking! “This belongs on the anime forum!” However, you’re mistaken. I’m going to use Death Note as my example, cuz its awesome, but this topic refers to literature, movies, anime, and more or less any other form of fantasy.

Anyway, something that I’ve come to love are stories the feature an evil protagonist! Or, maybe even just an antagonist in which you can find admirable attribute. This is, however, something you don’t see much in books these days. (Unless of course the book is mean to be morbid or something.) I rarely ever see it done -well- on T.V. Death Note got it the best. Now, I’m not talking about things like GTA the video game. Sure, the guys in there are probably evil, however they’re also doing something that the general audience will find -cool- or admirable. You understand? Also, the person doesn't have to be -evil- per-say... Tony Stark is a good guy, but he's got flaws! (Tony Stark is Iron Man in the Marvel comics.)

Well, anyway, am I alone here? I think it’s a breath of fresh air to what was becoming a redundant cliché. Other than the gangster fad, and the things that are simply aiming to disturb, it doesn’t seem people have many protagonists who are evil. Or if they are evil then they are evil to the extreme. I like Death Note cuz the guy is honestly out to do good. What do you think of evil protagonists? I know some people say it encourages kids to go out and be evil, but I think that’s crap. T.V and video games do not make people evil….

Evil protagonists? Meh, personally I prefer anti-heroes like Richard B. Riddick, Judge Dread, The Punisher, V, ect. Then again I guess some anti-heroes are not all too different from evil protagonists or antagonists...

Note: Riddick rocks!

I will agree with you about V and The Punisher, but HOW does Riddick suck? I mean wouldn't it be awesome if you had the ability to see in the dark like that and that you completely destroyed people in one-on-one combat?

Bah the first movie was reminiscent of the original Alien movie...Real good stuff as far as sci-fi horror films go. I also thought that the second movie was pretty good to, but I think that it really needs a third movie or else I will feel as if the story is incomplete (btw the game The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay is what tells the story prior to Pitch Black ---> Useful in understanding the movies)...

Yes, but if I saw Riddick he’d kill me. Cuz I’d sit there listening to him, and then get annoyed at his monotonous speech. I’d copy it and be like, “I think under certain circumstances, it is OK to change the tone of your voice!”

Also, I saw that first movie… (Pieces of it, but I thought the whole thing ultimately sucked,) and his vision sucks in the light! I would hate that! Keep your night vision, I can see better in the day than he can in the night, and better in the night than he can in the day. He’s also 100% cliché in that he’s a typical, “bad @ss.”

On the other hand, if I could say something like this:

Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a bygone vexation stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V.

In a rapid bursts I would use my poetic pleonasms and alliteration to mind boggle people all across the world! Even when I finally figured out all the words he used I still had to go through bit-by-bit to figure out what the central theme of the rant was. This is why V is awesome! That and his comically blunt honesty. Plus, I like what he stands for!

Also! Deadpool rocks!

One movie I favor, "the professional" or "Leon", has Jean Reno as an assassin, but hes not really a badass, and is a good guy at heart. Interesting to see the difference played out between good/bad character, and good/bad actions. Shows they don't necessarily go hand in hand.

I don't particularly care to read about evil characters, but ones that are conflicted are typically interesting to me. For example Boromir & Faramir from LOTR. B wants to take the ring and craves power, but ultimately he saves the hobbets and apologizes. F has problems with his father, does not get as much respect as B, but is the better man, faces relationship issues.

Another example is you have the main character, ultimately the hero, in the book Lord Fouls Bane, commit a savage rape.

Another movie I like, Hero, which has dustin hoffman. The one where he basically saves people on a plain, but steals the ladys purse in the meantime. Just a real cynical character, but a hero nonetheless. A lot of Bernie's line are gold, for instance:

"Passenger: [the plane crashes and Bernie stares at it wide-eyed] Please help us!
Bernie LaPlante: ...these are $100 dollar shoes! "

Bernie LaPlante: Prisons are for tough guys... prisons are for guys who beat each other up, lift weights... fuck each other.

Bernie LaPlante: [Bernie drives through a rainstorm] I know why it's raining. I coulda predicted it. It's raining because my fucking wipers are all fucked up. If my wipers were okay, the fucking sun would be shining, AT NIGHT.

"Bernie LaPlante: You remember when I said how I was gonna explain about life, buddy? Well the thing about life is, it gets weird. People are always talking ya about truth. Everybody always knows what the truth is, like it was toilet paper or somethin', and they got a supply in the closet. But what you learn, as you get older, is there ain't no truth. All there is is bullshit, pardon my vulgarity here. Layers of it. One layer of bullshit on top of another. And what you do in life like when you get older is, you pick the layer of bullshit that you prefer and that's your bullshit, so to speak. "

Conflicted and complicated = interesting. Just plain evil = ugh.

I think that evil is just a label which is defined by the expectations of society, and just like history, the ones who win are the ones that are good, or right.

Like in Death Note, people were starting to see him as a hero because his plan was working. (Personally I didn't really like the end so much, it wasn't like him to slip up like that)

I have always admired those that are willing to go against the grain that society has established to improve the world.

Though in literature, they often call these people an antihero (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-hero). In most cases in fiction, I find myself rooting for the villain (Provided I like his reasonings)

I don't really put much stock in the idea of good and evil. I think that they're a bit narrow-minded, at best, and downright ignorant at worst.

People are complicated, though many seem to find the willpower to stick to someone else's ideals easier than forging their own path of 'righteousness' and sticking to it. I've always admired relationships between people where two can pick opposite sides, and still be friends, while understanding they may well kill each other in the end.
