Probably one of the better stories.

My mom use to not favor anime and attempt to convince me to stop watching "kiddy animation". One day I sat her down and showed her Ghost In the Shell. She loved it and couldn't get over the story line that it's good for not only kids, but for adults too. (plus I was like 14 at the time. Brownie points for me)

Then showed her Pokemon immediately after and explained how anime's a MEDIUM for the genres people are interested in. Now I have her hooked on stuff like Paprika and such. Of course, I make it a point to stay away from Elfen Lied & Higurashi while around her; but mwahahah.

One more to the fold =3

EDIT:
Anyone that tells me all anime is Pokemon or hentai; I make it a rule to show them "Elfen Lied" if they think it's all Pokemon and Lucky Star if they think it's all hentai =3

mwahahah.

Nope.
The only parents I've heard discouraging their kids about watching anime, were Japanese ones.

When I first got into anime, my mom wasn't so sure about whether or not it could be added to the "constructive influences" list. She got an email one day that said something about anime, so she decided to try it out and clicked on the link. It turned out to be a hentai site.

I agree with the "stay away from Elfen Lied & Higurashi" point. Good parents SHOULD keep their younger kids away from the more graphically violent or sexual Anime, just like with any other media. I haven't found that Pokenom is all that bad, but it depends on the kid. I HAVE known certain younger kids to get too worked up over Power Rangers, which was not a good thing.

I've never really got what was so good about Elfen Lied, meh. My Dad tries to watch stuff with me but it creeps me out. My Mom just gets really bored and falls asleep. I don't think she could watch anything that's animated. I'm probably the opposite. I can't stand shows like House and Gray's Anatomy :p but I did find myself addicted to Hana Kimi... It doesn't count though because it's just like anime, but in a way better.
I think most people who hate anime never gave it a chance or haven't found what genre they like.
