I choose Stand up grappling because I heard that punches really hurt when you are in this position

I think that if you are grappling, you are most likely gonna end up on the ground, so I chose ground. I can use my elbows and fists just as effectively while rolling...

I gota say both!.. I've been so accustomed to stand up.. but freaking.. you're bound to go to the ground.anytime.. what we do i the martial arts club in my school.. we do NE WAZA (GROUND) switching, and tiring ourselves out. if we slack off we get choked hard as hell or pinned so uncomfortable.. then we do RANDORI( stand up) so we can use technique.. most cuz we're already tired.. and it syncs to our system.. but with others

we put the atemi, and striking.. from standup, and ground.. I prefer trapping on the ground. but on stand up.. on defense and attacking and countering especially for reflex.. the ground is so punishing for showoffs, and noobs.. but with alil help.. it pays off..especially for selfdefense!!!!

punches hurt from that position since the bottom can't do nothing but counter or try to dodge.. and the body bounces back.from underneath.. it may not seem so but.. our back especially the lower back, and thoraic vertebraes.. first then c1-c2 vertebrae from getting hit.. ..course it varies from position..
getting hit with both on ground.. its just uncomfy.. other than that.. not so bad until it hits soft spots or the skull, or bone by pressure XP. either the other guy is a jerk or not.. so put the pressure..

yo' the guy on guard can do a good ground dragon on that pic

So what do you think about martial arts like Aikido that emphasis more stand up grappling than ground grappling?

And what do you think of BJJ which emphasis mostly ground grappling?

(I do believe that all, grappling martial arts have both, but they just emphasis one more than the other)

I dont do alot of grappling really. I do more striking arts..TKD and Kickboxing. I do learn some jui jitsu and quite a bit of Hapkido and MMA that includes alot of ground stuff. I just cant get into it yet! Maybe someday I will. BJJ is the total shiznit!

i agree but i think bjj is special in the fact that you learn to start from a vulnerable position.. even from the mount.. you can still get countered without knowing.

i like to do both with opening up with strike practice.. not to hard.. not too full contact while training.. up the ante when you get better.. hell better said than done right??? shieeet lol

aikido has ne waza too dont get me wrong..but its amazing how they use energy transfer, distortion, AND DISLOCATION. i'd love to learn.. i only had two or three classes.. and its amazing.. its so natural.. and they're newaza can really be used in most positions.. thats something a self defense system needs!
