As far as I remember, having an extra thumb is a complication of Turner's syndrome. But in your situation, deformed thumbs? How are they deformed?

They're also called "potter's", "murderer's", "hammer", and "toe" thumb. In other words, I have wide thumbs.

Like that^

murderer's thumbs... XD

Yeah... That's what people call them. I'm shy about it, but it appears as though was drinking last night and posted my secret to the world. Whatever... I guess it helps me draw better anyway.

I changed the question from Trisomy 13 to Spina Bifida. When a baby is born with an abnormality on their spinal cord, it is usually diagnosed as Spina Bifida. Because of this, brain messages cannot travel to the body, thus eventually, that baby will die.

However, surgeries can be done to minimize the damages. You still have to be in crutches/wheelchairs/etc... though.

spina bifida isn't a genetic disorder...it's when the neural tube doesn't close at the bottom during fetal development...

Nobody knows what truly causes Spina Bifida. For now, many people also hypothesize that it is a genetic disorder affecting a specific chromosome that is yet to be discovered.

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke:

The exact cause of spina bifida remains a mystery. No one knows what disrupts complete closure of the neural tube, causing a malformation to develop. Scientists suspect genetic, nutritional, and environmental factors play a role. Research studies indicate that insufficient intake of folic acid—a common B vitamin—in the mother’s diet is a key factor in causing spina bifida and other neural tube defects. Prenatal vitamins that are prescribed for the pregnant mother typically contain folic acid as well as other vitamins.

For women out there... Eat a lot of "unpolished" rice!

....just because genetic factors may play a role doesnt mean its a genetic disorder...heck genetics can make some ppl more susceptible to getting the flu. That doesn't mean flu is a genetic disorder...

but yea spina bifida is nasty. I've seen some human specimens of aborted fetuses with spina bifida. It wasn't easy holding down my lunch.

funny thing is. some of those gentic disorders have a good part to them. i think that people have sickle cell are immune to something

Yes, they are immune to it, or it is less-likely gonna happen to those who have sickle cells. I also forgot. =_= Anyways, sickle cells can crazily damage your body; it can block your blood flow and whatsoever. So, I don't think it's that beneficial.

yea sickle-cell disease is some kind of mutation in the cells that make the cells carry less oxygen....
but i honestly think one of the worst genetic disorders(well, not thw WORST, but...) would have to be Hemophilia.
reason:you could die from bleeding because ur blood doesnt clot, or if u get a bruise(which a basically internal bleeding) u could die from that too. My friend(shes older though) has an autistic younger brother, and she even teaches kids with autism.:D

Nobody said that it is exactly a genetic disorder. If one day, someone (it could be you) proves that it is not, I would happily edit this thread.

That is why I hate looking at nasty stuff. I always remember, and it's really hard to divert my attention. =_=

What we can say is that our genes do give us the predisposition for certain anomalies which can help or harm during our existence. Just like if one had the predisposition for being an alcoholic; if they were not around it and never take a drink they would not become one.
All I can see is that the human race will eventually go extinct by one way or another (bad genes, environmental, etc.)

I have an gentic disorder, Nerurofibromatosis (NF). http://www.nfinc.org/what.shtml
Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a genetic disorder of the nervous system which causes tumors to form on the nerves anywhere in the body at any time. This progressive disorder affects all races, all ethnic groups and both sexes equally. NF is one of the most common genetic disorders in the United States (one in every 3,000 to 4,000 births).

NF1 is what I have but a less serve case than some I have known. I am thankful for at least that.
Personal belief:
For the most part 'natural selection' has come to a halt. Those that in the past would have died or not have made it in society, live to reproduce and pass on the genes. However minor my case may be it will be amplified in the next generation, even more so if it is with someone, known or unknown to them, that has the same condition. I despise the fact that I have it but believe that I somehow have added for the good to those and the world around me.
For the most part I am in pain for most of the day, tumors wrap around my nerves, twisting causing suffering. But this is a genetic disorder and by no means contagious. Some of us may look different or weird but are wonderful people. I would never wish this upon my child though. There are so many genetic faults that mine almost seems trivial compared to them. We cannot let the unknown scary us so badly. Who is to say it is not for the better? We can not say for certain that the world would be better with their absence.

omg thats soooo sad i hope you get better

anyways when i was little i had these "lump" they had to remove it with surgery
i dont have scars if people are wondering, im fine it was nothuing to worry about
ummmm idk if its a genitic disorder
