Hiragana ひらがな

'a' as in 'a're
'i' as in 'e've
'u' as in 'w'olf *'u' is a weak vowel and the sound is short
'e' as in 'a'ir
'o' as in 'o'range

Katakana カタカナ

Katakana is used for words with foreign origin.

Example:
テレビ (terebi): television, television is of foreign origin
ラーメン (ramen): long noodles, this is of Chinese origin, so it can appear in another form called 'Kanji'. 拉麺。

Hiragana: Words of Japanese Origin
Katakana: Words of Foreign Origin
Kanji: Words of Chinese Origin

Putting the scripts together doesn't change the pronunciation of each syllabus. However, for some cases, 'u' and 'i' are silent or left out when pronouncing, because 'i' and 'u' are weak vowels especially 'u'.
Example:
です desu、 which means 'it is/are' is pronounced as 'des' 'u' is silent.
