It's TIME to stop thinking about US and more about THEM
Posted 10/23/08

hello,

"At least 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 a day.

More than 80 percent of the world’s population lives in countries where income differentials are widening.

The poorest 40 percent of the world’s population accounts for 5 percent of global income. The richest 20 percent accounts for three-quarters of world income.

According to UNICEF, 26,500-30,000 children die each day due to poverty. And they “die quietly in some of the poorest villages on earth, far removed from the scrutiny and the conscience of the world. Being meek and weak in life makes these dying multitudes even more invisible in death.”

Around 27-28 percent of all children in developing countries are estimated to be underweight or stunted. The two regions that account for the bulk of the deficit are South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

If current trends continue, the Millennium Development Goals target of halving the proportion of underweight children will be missed by 30 million children, largely because of slow progress in Southern Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

Based on enrollment data, about 72 million children of primary school age in the developing world were not in school in 2005; 57 per cent of them were girls. And these are regarded as optimisitic numbers.

Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names.

Less than one per cent of what the world spent every year on weapons was needed to put every child into school by the year 2000 and yet it didn’t happen.

Infectious diseases continue to blight the lives of the poor across the world. An estimated 40 million people are living with HIV/AIDS, with 3 million deaths in 2004. Every year there are 350–500 million cases of malaria, with 1 million fatalities: Africa accounts for 90 percent of malarial deaths and African children account for over 80 percent of malaria victims worldwide"- http://www.globalissues.org/article/26/poverty-facts-and-stats

Yes our economy is very bad and the stock market has lately plunged and everyone is about to die! Stop it. Think and breath. We are not the ones that are in the crisis others are in BIGGER one then us. I think it's time to set our money aside. And look around the world. We are not the only ones that are feeling the pain... there are more too.

Imagine those from third world countries and how there dollar an hour is now being reduced to fifty cents. We have to got to think of others. We have got to think USA and many more places are only worried about themselves but none one is taking time to worry about others.

Why is that? Why doesn't anybody care for those who are homeless and dying? Why are we only looking at ourselves. Now that the holidays are coming up all we do is take out our money and buy. That money that you are about to give to stores could go to places which are useful. They could go to sponser a child. They could even go to missionary camps.

So stop worrying about your being and start worrying for the REAL people with the REAL issues.

Dude we cant fix anything if our country is bankrupt and broke. Yes I understand your need to help these poor children God bless their heart but you cant help anyone if you cant help yourself. We cant send these countries billions of our money when our economy is against the ropes and we have many Americans at home hungry, poor, and job less. We fix ourselves first then we can help everyone else.

if the roles were reversed, i wonder who would do the same for us?

besides, the U.S. already contributes billions of dollars in aid to all these decrepit places. the DCD-DAC reported that the 22 countries who are in the OECD Development Assistance Committee donated $103.7bn in 2007. if the money is not reaching the people, it is their own corrupt governments' fault.

Instead of sending our money to the corrupt leaders of poverty striken nations, we should go over there with our own military and use them for aid missions and distribute the medical supplies and food. Trusting corruption with billions of dollars is futile. They could care less about the people in their nation, and only line their pockets with it. I can personally attest to this, when I went to Haiti I saw tons of unfinished housing projects in Port Au Prince, this is because the president "at the time" took the money for himself and only begged the US and UN for more saying that "it wasn't enough." If we want to stop world poverty we need to get rid of corruption, and distribute the aid ourselves. As individuals, we should pray for the poor and give what we can (to reputible charities) and maybe even go on an aid trip of our own.

there are some occasions where we do send in our military to South East Asian countries, ive seen it. but that ussualy is only when a natural disaster occurs. But i know that there are exercise throughtout the year conducted by US military forces in the Asian AOR that offer medical and dental aid to countries like Malaysia, Thailand, Phillipines, etc.

i get tired of hearing about this stuff. we need to fix out own problems first befor we go help any one else.
Even when we do go to help other people it just makes every one hate us even more.

If the roles were reversed and we were in there situation we would be fucked. no one would come to save out asses in fact they would prolly kick us while we were down.

Where in the hell is the money even going to come from to support them? The USA is broke it would be stupid to suggest our government to keep sending Aid to these other countries. It is hard for us to make a living as it is as our economy goes down and the dollar that keeps declining but your telling us to send money overseas? I know this sounds very selfish but untill the USA can become a boilstering economy right now we have to take care of our own first because we are in bad shape right now.

Right now the money (from the US) is pre-budgeted, meaning we don't give out of a surplus, but as a plan to give. We budget how much we spend on aid (in most cases) I agree that we should fix our issues, but we also need to help out, and ask other nations (who do have a budget surplus) to aid poverty stricken nations.

You gave a bunch of numbers regarding suffering, but you didn't provide any reasons that people should care, other than, "they" are "real" people.

But if I start donating money now, I won't be able to get my 6th iPhone. I think that's a little more important right now.

Well, a thread that has actual potential. Except for the really pushy attitude.

Money won't fix anything. The infrastructure of those countries must be fundamentally changed. No more corrupt governments with no way to counter them; better choices for education; expanded economic markets and public institutions; etc.

even if Americans have the money they still wouldn't help.... how many wealthy people live in this country?everyone's bitchin and moaning about the economy and about losing jobs! people are just lazy we live in a country where we can start over and again... no but everyone wants to cry and sit on thier ass! suck it up crying isn't gonna get you anywhere thier are thousands of people who are dying just to come here because things in their country are so bad! most of the clothes on our backs come from these poor people who arent even getting paid 50 cents a day for the work they do! but yet everyone wants to bitch and moan over fucking prices! how pathetic! some of thease people come here and make Americans look bad because they work hard! and thier so thankful because they got the chance to come here when others couldn't and make something out of themselves! but we've lived here all our lives so no one really knows how bad anyone else has it and just how very privileged we are just to be living here alone!.all that dam money they went and spent on a fucking war they couldn't seem to win! all that money could have been put to use for this economy problem america brags that they have this, and they have that, and we can do anything and everything because were the richest country in the world... ...well they dont seem so TOUGH now do they? since were so RICH let this country deal with its problems that they probably caused thier dam selves....!
