That wasn't the V.tech shooter. Many people asked him too, but he said that was his real picture.

This brings in the question of using copy-righted images as Avatars...

Umm...
Hehheh...
I think my image is copyrighted by someone else...

huh. It seems that almost any picture put on the internet is automatically put under the right to be freely distributed. Meaning, if its on the internet, its free game. I think.

Law would say otherwise. I was apart of another forum that got shutdown for 3 days by Time Warner Inc. because members were using copy-righted images in their signatures.

^ with regard to online content - everything is copyrighted by the author who put it up there... but since it's so easy to grab, it's the responsibility of the author to pursue whoever stole their work and not the company that served as a medium to share his work (i.e. deviantART, Multiply, etc.).

I don't make avis, but I take pictures, and I always resize my images and stick a signature so it's not too easy to grab (and if they do grab it, it'll be too tiny to edit into anything useable. :P)

What I'm saying is basically...

"If you stole it, is it so bad if someone steals it in turn from you?"

I think i'll put that in my thread.

That's probably fear of lawsuit, and not actual law. Using a copyrighted image as your avatar on forums is probably protected under the fair use doctrine, (generally a first amendment exception to copyright). Although threat of lawsuits makes a lot of legally legitimate websites shut down.

Copyright laws mostly deals with making profit off other people stuff. If you're not making money off other people's work it should be fine. You're allowed to parody stuff with/out permission.

eh, you can only have trouble in most cases if your servers are based in the US, where the copyright laws bite.

I wasn't really questioning the morality of taking images offline and using them as Avatars, but wether it was right to protest when someone did to your avatar when you took the image to begin with.

No, someone really did have the VTech shooter as their avi. I think it was ktito, if I remember correctly.

Anyway, I grab my avi's from the web and just crop them, maybe add a border or something. So the same exact thing can't be found on the web, and if someone steals it I'd know. Not happened to me yet, probably since I'm not around much. But it wouldn't bother me, I'd just pm them and ask about it.

But if you actually made your avi, I would recommend putting your sn on it, so maybe people will think twice before taking it. And even if they do, they'll just be advertising you. I don't think the type of people that steal avi's would bother with editing them. (I've actually seen someone using an avi that had someone else's sn on it.)

I can't believe how society has fallen lately. This just shows how we can't trust anything in the world. If we can't safely post our avis online, then what is sacred in the world? sigh...

yes its kind of lame to take an avatar someone else is using.

Yes its lame to create a public thread about it, when you should have just discussed the matter to try to come to a resolution.

I think mods should respond to this, to at least have a clear stance for the community. Some basic stuff like using another persons photo as avi without consent should not be allowed.

I know you would think having an image up where any one could take, you could expect that people would at least have enough common decency not to steal it. But I guess that is just the world we are now forces to live in.
