Guys reading shoujo? GREAT! every guy should, because it teaches them how to be romantic lol.
And just like many people mentioned, if a girl can read shounen, a guy can read shoujo.
I guess most guys would stray away from shoujo or read it secretly in the privacy of their own room because they are afraid of judgment from others. I can see many guys laughing at their male peers for reading a girly manga, but... you shouldn't let that stop you from reading a good romance story!

My wife makes fun of me because I like shoujo manga. But sometimes I need a break from the fighting in shounen manga and want a little slice-of-life story. Some of my favorites are "Red River", "Nodame Cantibile" and "Nana."

YAH know what? I really admire guys
who read shojo manga. It doesn't
make any guy gayish by reading it.
HURAH! to all guys who are
brave enough to read one.
Maybe all of you will
learn a thing or two about
girls by reading shojo mangas.

Yep, there's nothing wrong with a guy reading shoujo, but once in a while some immature idiot will come along and say that you'
re gay or something...But it shouldn't bother you.

I'm a guy and I don't mind reading shoujo type. It's called shoujo because oftentimes, it's really cheesey, and the characters are cute, you know, the drawings are big eyes, which makes it more likeable for girls, but that's it..

Wrong, shoujo manga means comics for girls, it doesn't mean cheesey. It's called like that because the story, drawings etc. is made for girls' tastes. Shoujo manga or shounen manga means the target audience that's all. it's not a clear cut indication of content, there is romantic boys' comics, and violent or bloody and not cute shoujo manga.

I agree, its pretty much the same thing as us girls reading something like naruto and one piece from shonen jump...I just think its called "shojo" because most females prefer romance in their mangas and thus, shojo beat was born! lol that's just my theory...

No, it's called shoujo manga because it's written for a girl audience, period.

Shoujo manga literally means comics for girls, or girls' comics. As long as it's published in a shoujo manga magazine, it's shoujo manga. Not all shoujo manga are about romance. The manga that is published in Western countries is only a small, non-representative fraction of all the manga published in Japan. There is like at least a thousand manga released per month in Japan, compare that to around a hundred in the USA and Japan has more than twice less the population of the USA.

Same for shounen manga, there is a lot of shounen manga about sports in Japan, but few of them are released in the USA.

There are shoujo manga about horror, sci-fi, action, history, heroic fantasy...

For example, Jyu-Oh-Sei is a shoujo manga, the anime was published in the US under the name "Planet of the Beast King" I think.. Many people outside Japan, when they saw the anime didn't want to believe it's targeted to girls because it's sci-fi and has blood and violence.

And there is a significant number of horror shoujo mangas in Japan for example, actually, horror is more common in shoujo manga than shounen manga (boys' comics), which goes against Western stereotypes that horror is a guy's thing, like sci-fi.

Japanese mainstream comics are neatly divided into target audiences (boys, girls, men, women...) because they grew out of magazines (which didn't publish only manga in the beginning), which have a specific target audience. Even in the USA, there are men's magazines and women's magazines.

Here is an article explaining what shounen manga and shoujo manga really mean, written by a university professor teaching in Japan, who has been studying manga for years: http://matt-thorn.com/shoujo_manga/whatisandisnt.php

I watch/read a lot of shounen. I think it's cool that guys read/watch shoujo or animes/mangas that target girls.
