I got interested in punk about a year ago. One of my very best friends is a punk, he's older than me by like (come to think of it, I never asked him his age), well, if I had to guess, I'd say he's close to 30. He doesn't dress super punk, but he's still addicted to sleeveless shirts, and pants with the legs torn off at mid-calf. He's my senpai. I met him at my last place of work, and over time, and through lots of research, I learned what punk is, and along the way, discovered that I've always been a punk. He helped me find my center, so to speak. (Actually, if we wanna get really specific, I'm gothic-punk. Which is goth, but still qualifies as punk. A hybrid, if you will, as goth evolved from punk in the first place)

There is actually no handbook to punk.

There are many stereotypes. Punk is liberal in nature, so the individual punk follows his interpretation. Therefore, punk is as wide and varied as ideologies are.

Punk is more than just a genre of music, or a style of dress. It is an ideology, and a way of life.

In a way, I think one either is punk, or isn't. I'm sure some people could become punk, but I think it's more like those people always were, and finally found their center in punk. Make sense?

Punk is not racist, it is not fascist, it is not sexist, it is not globalist, it seeks freedom within the boundaries of common sense. Punk isn't necessarily anarchist. Nor does one have to be anarchist to be punk.

Punk stresses being open minded, but it doesn't tolerate following things blindly.

"Take a look at yourself from the other side, and see if it's really you.
The reason for life is living, so do what you gotta do.
Catch the fire of inspiration, seek and you shall find.
Go on down your own path, don't follow things so blind.

Do what you do (but know why you're doing it).
Do what you do for fun.
Do what you do (but know why you're doing it).
You're the only one.

Trash and truth are easily mixed, split them with your axe.
Burning ambitions fizzle out, don't listen to the facts.
They've got power in supply, overload and fuse it.
Don't sit at home vegetating ..
you've got a brain so use it.

Apathy is on the increase, problems are easily shared.
Freedom's on the horizon, but I didn't know you cared.
Plant the seed of hope and promise, feed it, it will grow.
Question all the answers, rock the Status Quo." - Do what you do ~ G.B.H.

Punk is against corruption in government, and business. It seeks betterment, and truth. Punk trys to make a difference. Through grass roots initiatives. "Don't fight the media, become the media." Anything from, making your own magazine, newspaper, or radio station, to talking to people, and spreading the truth (or what you think to be the truth).
Punks are very interested in DIY (Do It Yourself). Which could be stuff like making your own clothes, running your own busines, etc. If you can do it yourself, then that's DIY.
Punk is idealistic. And the best way to fix something sometimes, is to get mad about it. Punk trys to use that energy to achieve something.

"Pass The Axe"

Kickin' up the dust clouds here we go,
out to the Wild West.
Ride the ferry as the sun goes down,
carrying on the quest.
But on the way back all's not well,
there's an incident on deck.
Big brave bullies with CS gas,
tried to break the kids neck.
Big brave bullies with CS gas,
tried to break the kids neck.

Pass the axe an' I'll show you justice,
pass the axe an' I'll show you what's right.
Pass the axe an' I'll show you justice,
your blocking freedom out of sight.
Pass the axe and I'll take a slice.

When a rat is cornered a rat fights back,
with all the strength he's got.
Shut yourself in the toilet boys and pray it has a lock.
Lights they're a flashin', it's a ten-0-four,
there's trouble in the dock.
Abuse your power an' you'll pay the price,
impounded in asbestos.
Abuse your power an' you'll pay the price,
impounded in asbestos.
Abuse your power an' you'll pay the price,
impounded in asbestos.

Hydro - electric city,
Twentieth Century state.
Ultrasonic people,
Nihilistic hate.

Only six arrests that night,
it's not what you'd call a riot.
And now upon the Western Front,
everything is quiet.
The accused stood up, then sat down,
they ain't done nothing wrong.
And to commemorate their actions,
we dedicate this song.
And to commemorate their actions,
we dedicate this song.

Before you say anything, yes, I know Metallica isn't punk, however! This song (and that album actually) has a message that is very punk in content.

Metallica - And justice for all
Eye of the Beholder
(Hetfield,ulrich,hammet)
Do You See What I See?
Truth Is an Offence
You Silence for Your Confidence
Do You Hear What I Hear?
Doors Are Slamming Shut
Limit Your Imagination, Keep You Where They must
Do You Feel What I Feel?
Bittering Distress
Who Decides What You Express
Do You Take What I Take?
Endurance Is the Word
Moving Back Instead of Forward Seems to Me Absurd

Doesn't Matter What You See?
Or into it What You Read
You Can Do it Your Own Way
If It's Done Just How I Say

Independence Limited
Freedom of Choice
Choice Is Mad for You My Friend
Freedom of Speech
Speech Is Words That They Will Bend
Freedom with Their Exception

Do You Fear What I Fear?
Living Properly
Truths to You Are Lies to Me
Do You Choose What I Choose?
More Alternives
Energy Derives from Both the plus and Negative
Do You Need What I Need?
Boundaries Overthrown
Look Inside to Each His Own
Do You Trust What I Trust?
Me, Myself and I
Penetrate the Smoke Screen I See Through the Selfish lie

Doesn't Matter What You See
Or into it What You Read
You Can Do it Your Own Way
If It's Done Just How I Say

Independence Limited
Freedom of Choice
Choice Is Mad for You My Friend
Freedom of Speech
Speech Is Words That They Will Bend
Freedom with Their Exception

Do You Know What I Know?
Your Money End Your Wealth
Your Silence Just to Hear Your Self
Do You Want What I Want?
Desire Not a Thing
I Hunger after Independence Lengthen Freedom's Ring

Doesn't Matter What You See
Or into it What You Read
You Can Do it Your Own Way
If It's Done Just How I Say

Independence Limited
Freedom of Choice
Choice Is Mad for You My Friend
Freedom of Speech
Speech Is Words That They Will Bend
Freedom no longer frees you

Doesn't Matter What You See
Or into it What You Read
You Can Do it Your Own Way
If It's Done Just How I Say

A punk doesn't support anything that goes against any of his/her personal beliefs.
A punk doesn't become part of "the system", for personal wealth/fame or success. In fact, in it's heyday, a lot of punks were homeless, as a statement against money, and the system.
Success isn't bad, but one has to do it in a punk way. For instance: If you wanted to become a doctor, that would be fine, but you would have to realise that there's a lot of corruption in the medical business, and tha there's so much disinformation, that even the good people are really furthering the corrupt ones agendas. So you would have to look into alternative treatments. Find stuff that works better. Nutrition, so that you could help people prevent their problems, instead of using pharmaceuticals to patch a problem while it actually gets worse. You would try to find ways to make your reatments more afordable to people who normally don't have the means to afford treatment.
That's just one example.

That's just the tip of the iceberg.........

Well, that's what I've managed to surmise. I feel like I used the word punk too many times though.

And, remember. Green day sucks. (green day= fuckin' sell outs.)

Punk Ist... (Punk Is...) by Die Ärzte

Mach Dein Ding, steh' dazu. Heul nicht rum, wenn andere lachen.
Mach Dein Ding, steh' dazu.

Mach Dein Ding, steh' dazu. Heul nicht rum, wenn andere lachen, no no no.
Mach Dein Ding, steh' dazu und heul nicht rum, wenn andere lachen.
Mach Dein Ding, steh' dazu. Heul nicht rum, wenn andere lachen,
denn ich tu's nicht!

Ich tu's nicht!

Translated

You say: ' Punk is - being ultra-drunk every day.'.
You say: ' Punk is - dirty, cowardly and common '.
You say: ' Punk is - self-mutilation, force and hate ',
that like great fun.

You say: ' Punk is politically uncomfortable - '.
You say: ' Punk is - to set your spirit against the system '.
You say: ' Punk is - pure existentialism,
Denial of values and structure '.

I say ' to you:
Do your thing, stand ' to it. Don't whine, if others laugh.
Do your thing, stand ' to it. Don't whine, if others laugh.
Like Me.

You say: ' Punk is - cool clothes, everything skindeep '.
You say: ' Punk is - a good music taste '.
You say: ' Punk is - drunken songs growled at the pub,
and only '77 was genuine '.

You say: ' Punk is - getting up at 7 every morning '.
You say: ' Punk is - going to work every day '.
You say, that's Punk for you,
In my opinion, do it yourself.
For me Punk "licks and shaves arse".

And I say ' to you:
Do your thing, stand ' to it. Don't whine, if others laugh., NO NO NO.
Do your thing, stand ' to it and Don't whine, if others laugh.
Do your thing, stand ' to it. Don't whine, if others laugh.
because I don't!

I don't! (wdh.)

^Awesome song btw. Where can I download that?

^ Practically any bi-torrent, though I'd prefer you to support the band.

You may find the intro a little... unorthodox.

But it has been sold. The media bastardized the movement, and when bands like the sex pistols, Green day, and the clash achieved fame they helped it.

Now people think going out and having a mohawk, spikes, leather, and all that jazz is punk, when it's not. It turned from being a genuine cause to being mindless thuggery in the public eye.

Dude 1: "What's punk?"

Dude 2: *kicks over trash can* "That's punk."

Dude 1: "That's punk?"

Dude 2: "No that's trendy."

Punk is dead in the sense that, no one knows what it was about anymore, and it's just a trend, or a fashion.

NOFX LYRICS

"Medio-Core"

Medio-core
It's not forsaken
The music they're makin'
Will leave you with a feeling of indifference
How was the band?
They were okay (okay)
Not great (all right)
But pretty good
They played the songs I knew they would
Some old
Some new
The same formula stays true
We can concur
It's medio-core

Sing
Sing a song
Make it simple
So all the kids can sing along (ahh)
Sing along (ahh)

The list keeps growin'
The melodies been stolen
Remind me of songs sung in the 70's
You might fool the kids
But you don't fool me
Have you ever heard of something called
aboriginality?

Is it absurd
To compose music no one's ever heard

Predictability
Like a bussom will comfort them
My one true foe
L.C.D.

(Medio-core) It's under powered
The riffs are all deflowered
(Medio-core) It's spreading faster
Than British tooth decay
(Medio-core) Are you ready to rock?
How ya'll doing tonight?
(Medio-core) Your condescending fucks
Make me wanna laugh and puke at the same time.
(Medio-core)
I'm one to speak,
This song sounds like fifteen you've heard before
Medio-core

Sing
Sing a song
Make it simple
So all the kids can sing along (ahh)
Sing along (ahh)

CRASS LYRICS

"Punk Is Dead"

Yes that's right, punk is dead,
It's just another cheap product for the consumers head.
Bubblegum rock on plastic transistors,
Schoolboy sedition backed by big time promoters.
CBS promote the Clash,
But it ain't for revolution, it's just for cash.
Punk became a fashion just like hippy used to be
And it ain't got a thing to do with you or me.

Movements are systems and systems kill.
Movements are expressions of the public will.
Punk became a movement cos we all felt lost,
But the leaders sold out and now we all pay the cost.
Punk narcissism was social napalm,
Steve Jones started doing real harm.
Preaching revolution, anarchy and change
As he sucked from the system that had given him his name.

Well I'm tired of staring through shit stained glass,
Tired of staring up a superstars arse,
I've got an arse and crap and a name,
I'm just waiting for my fifteen minutes fame.
Steve Jones you're napalm,
If you're so pretty (vacant) why do you swarm?
Patti Smith you're napalm,
You write with your hand but it's Rimbaud's arm.

And me, yes I, do I want to burn?
Is there something I can learn?
Do I need a business man to promote my angle?
Can I resist the carrots that fame and fortune dangle?
I see the velvet zippies in their bondage gear,
The social elite with safety-pins in their ear,
I watch and understand that it don't mean a thing,
The scorpions might attack, but the systems stole the sting.

PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD.
PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD.
PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD.

There are still real punks, and there are new punks that are legit, but on a large scale punk is dead.

On a much smaller scale though it's still alive, and kicking.

It's more of a movement than a fashion.

I feel that you're getting at whether it's always going to be fashionable, and the basic answer to that is, no.
There will always be people who go against the trend and choose a more individual / "anarchist" existence, however they will not always be labelled as "punks". At my university for instance, there is one main activist group, and I'm probably the most "punk" person in it. In contrast the punk society run political punk gigs and "rock against racism" events, which are less confrontationary, but still "punk".

to me punk isn't about clothes...it's about sifting through all the crap this world feeds us and thinking for yourself, not always agreeing with the status quo...that includes selling out. being different is the key I think.

Fuck, that. Too much corruption. I'd be working against everybody. XP

No; being yourself.

Not different. The two ideas are easily confused.

You don't want to be different if it involves acting in a way that you usaully wouldn't, and is therefore not you.

Catch my drift?

Nonconformity is doing nothing blindly. Always know why you're doing something, always know why you believe as you do.

what i mean is being different than how others expect you to be.... like my friends are gonna get wasted...i'm gonna be different and leave em... be yourself obviously...but many follow what others do because it's popular...it's not wrong to be different. and besides the punk belief is believe what you want...and that's what i believe.
