This aspect of bleach always boggled me. Where does Hyorinmaru comes from? Does Ashisogi Jinzo lives in another dimension? Or Sebonzakura is only a manifested aftereffect of awakening soul reaping powers? I mean, really, hollow's ressurecion make more sense then shinigami powers.

I hope that Tite Kubo elaborates on that someday or even makes a decent arc about soul slayers in-depth.

Good question. They're supposed to be manifestations of the person's soul. So pretty much they exist within the Soul Reaper. When called upon, they're able to physically appear.Because they're no longer living beings, their soul doesn't have to be present within their body. Hence they can manifest outside of the body and essentially be the person's sword or whatever idk

i think the simplest explanation for a zanpakutou would be, as memphis mentioned above, a manifestation of one's soul. but if you've watched Diamond Dust Rebellion (which was honestly difficult to get through), i think the situation requires a further explanation.

yeah, so, if anyone's got the answer to the very reason why Bleach shinigamis exist, then please, i'd like to hear it.

Yea, I was confused about that as well when I watched Diamond Dust Rebellion. That movie really didn't give a good explanation of the situation.

I dunno. All I know is that they are manifestations of their true souls. I think the sword is just like an extention of their soul used to channel their true soul. Gah soo confusing! Basically, there katana is like an canvas, the zanpakuto (inner soul) is the paint and the soul reaper the painter. Just an extention of the soul from within. I dont think there are different dimensions.

As for the case between the two holders of hyourinmaru, who knows? Maybe the geniuses that come once every generation are exempt from the rule. But it was just a filler so we don't know if its true anyway.

Manifestation of their souls? Well although it may look like that, the reason why the zanpakuto are confusing is their "self-being". I mean, I'll take a good example: zangetsu. The ability to speak, think and maybe even perhaps feel for himself sets him as a completely other being than just being ichigo's manifestation of his true soul. I mean, like, these zanpakutous are actually concious of their own existence instead of just being "powers" born from within. If anything, what links the zanpakutou and the soul reapers are perhaps their personalities but even those differs from their wielders.

I swear, they'd be much easier to understand if they were just being summoned like familiars in some magic-type anime than being manifested.

question: how does a male get a female zanpakuto and vice versa?
example: urahara kisuke

At the same time, if it's their soul's manifestation, how come they don't have it from the moment they enter Soul Society? They only gain their Zanpakutou once they graduate from the academy. Do they just have a huge room of these swords and they give them out to you when you graduate? lol

You get the sword and eventually through training, you and the sword from a bond and are linked together.

Not entirely correct. The reason why they had to fight was because it is a crime for a shinigami to pocess the same zanpaktou as another shinigami, to decide who has the right to wield, they had to fight to the death. Unfortunatly it another one of those redicoulous soul society laws that piss Ichigo off. Also the reason that Shinigamis excist in Bleach isn't just to cleanse the souls of Hollows, but to keep an equal balance of souls between the living world and the soul society.

They can't wield their Zanpaktou until they learn its name. They wield a nameless katana until they learn the name of their Zanpaktou, thats why Ichigo has a different Zanpaktou at the beginning.

Right. Okay. Yeah, I totally forgot about the gritty details about the crime and whatnot. But that still does not explain why Hitsugaya and that other dude shared the zanpakutou to begin with. Why were they able to possess one zanpakutou at the same time? The question posed is still not being answered. Where, regardless of it being a person's soul or an entirely different being altogether, does the power of zanpaktous come from? ........................ I feel that i just talked myself back to square one.
