Because that is the author's will.

Then what?

its really simple once you watch who knows how many animes.... "i love you" is sort of a final thing.... love is sort of absolute, with no end, eternal... well that is what the ideal meaning of love is.... like is just temporary and will always go thru change.... i assume that animes use "i like you" more because there will be always an event that will challenge and probably change that "like".... there will always be conflict within the main character of your typical harem anime to whom shall he/she choose...

so u wanna know y? go say it to someone u like in stories we can be told the character's thought but in real life... it's hard to know of the other person is feeling the same way u are if getting shot down is really not that painfull the pain is yet to come when he or she tells all his or her friends about u liking him or her... and not only u got shot down everyone now knows about ur feelings this is why its so hard to say i love u.

in stories after u say i love u there could only be two answers yes or no if yes they live happly ever after or no the love relationship ends there. both ways it ends the story by making it hard to confess it's realistic drags the story on and opens many laughable ideas like say in school rumble when tanma was writing the love leter and keep writing random things instead of i love you.

Because most romances are about the development of the relationship, and any conflicts that get in the way, not about people that are already in one.

"I love you" usually comes right before characters start going out.

although i know what you mean when you get angry at them for not expressing themselves and it makes you groan at the screen.. on the anime point i agree.... many romancie ones end with going "kiss her baka!" or "say u love her baka!" or the other way arouind....the thing is i just think you haven't read enough manga cause ive read pleanty where they say i love you.... and lots of them end with a i can't live with out u or you are my everything or seeing them getting married

Maybe the author would think that it would be too boring if an anime lover would do such thing. It would be better if they'll express their affection by action

umm well cause, in real life i really dont see many people going around saying, "i love you..."
seriously.
people usually say it jokingly.
cause its embarassing...
plus, japanese are really conservative in that sense (well, i heard the girls are easy. rofl.)
but yeah, and your criteria... its kinda gross... watch Nana.. i think thats pretty good...

EDIT
MY BAD, Nana is NOTTT what youre looking for, now that ive read other replies.
i thinkkkk
you should read
MOE KARE!!
yeah, that one would be perfect.

You say it right. It is true to tell someone "I love you".You know I had crush on a boy whom I loved him mare than 5 years but I never dared to tell him that i love him because i am so embrassed and
I also feel nervous to tell

I guess culture also has some impact on this.
Say for Final Fantasy X, at the end when Tidus about to part with Yuna.
In the Japanese version, he only says 'arigato', but with the English version, they changed it to 'I love you'

Although FFX isn't anime, but they tell the same thing.

i don't know but my personal opinion is.........i hate anime the they take 25 EPISODES to say i love u or to kiss or sometimes they don't even say it........and they do worst stuff that kissing like grabbing boos seeing the other character naked that worst that kissing and when they going to kiss or say i love u they put it like a big deal......he all ready grab her boob or saw saw her naked...... so what is the big deal with kissing or saying i love u!

If you think about it, that's the whole point of romantic anime..... You keep watching it and waiting for the main character to say those words, it would be pretty boring if they would confess on the first episode don't you think???

I know thats wat I am talking about

agree
it's a cliff-hanger guys..
