I watched loads of Sailor Moon at age pre-seven, and even then it was pretty easy for me to figure out it wasn't American. They were flashing kana all over the place in some of the later seasons. I didn't really get the difference between shows from the US and anime, though. Well, I sort of got it. I noticed how some shows (namely the Japanese variety) had actual plot, while the rest were basically just a collection of episodes that only had a central theme (maybe) and a selection of main characters in common. Later on, though, I started watching dubbed Miyazakis in my spare time and and the term "anime" finally became an actual concept for me, as well as the idea that anime came from Japan and had its own unique style and artwork. One day a year or so ago I had this weird urge to watch some Sailor Moon again after all those years, and after deciding that buying the DVDs would be a waste of money I borrowed some help from a friend and tried You Tube. After watching the entire 200 ep series dubbed (I'm amazed I lived) I decided to try Japanese and ended up on CR. After that I tried some mainstream titles (mostly crap like Bleach and Naruto) and dropped most of them after the first few eps after discovering just how much I couldn't stand the shounen demographic (though being new to anime meant that I didn't know about the terms "shounen" and shoujo".) Then I tried some La Corda d'Oro. Boom, I'm hooked. It branched off from there.

YES!!!!

I've always knew anime was from Japan or S. Korea (mostly from Japan of course) because the credits were (sometimes) in Japanese or in Hangul, some of the theme songs were sung in either one of those languages (I learned how to differenciate Japanese from Korean when I was eleven), and if the series had the credits in romaji, all the collaborators names were Japanese or Korean.

But I just called them asian cartoons, 'cause I didn't know the word anime, which I learned it at the age of nine.

example:

sailor moon is an asian cartoon, but it's my favorite show ever!!!!!!
that asian cartoon (from Korea, and I don't remember it's name) with the girls and the koalas is sooooo cute, I never miss it!!!!!!
