You can fall out of love with someone. It sounds horrible but that line about loving someone but not being 'in' love with them really is true. I met a man right out of high school that was much older than me. I was madly in love with him. But over the years I was still growing and learning as a person, just starting out on my own and he had already been through all those things. We grew apart but I still loved him. I don't think you can ever completely stop loving someone if it was really love.

"I must have been a fool to love you so hard for so long

So much stronger than before but so much harder to move on

And now the bitter chill of a winter still blows through me like a plague

Only to wake up with an empty bed on a perfect summer day"

It really is possible. And it works kinda like this. Although this is a simple way to describe it. Although probably the best way. You've all had a crush on someone before. But with time, things changed.. they moved or were dating another person. Before you knew it you realized you no longer had a crush on this person... Happens about the same when you are in a relationship and madly in love with a person. One day you wake up and realize that you are only lying next to this person anymore out of habit/convenience, and not out of love. And maybe you don't care. Because sometimes convenience is better than love anyway. Or maybe its the same thing. Who cares.

^^

I used to love doughnuts...
But then I got fat...
Now I hate them...and fell in love with running.

There was this one person. The feelings go away and keep coming back and leaving.

From what I've seen many people have yet to understand what falling in love means and involves, let alone falling out of love.

I'm 26 (so maybe older than a few of you?) but I've had one very serious 4 year relationship/engagement that didn't end up happily ever after. From that experience there are a few things I learned about love.

1. People change, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worst, and sometimes your love will become incompatible with who that person has changed into, that's just the reality of life.

2. For most people when you reach the 2-3 year range something changes, you become accustomed to that person being around. The infatuation and "lovely dovey" feeling goes away. That whole newness sensation is over, so in that way yes I do think people can "fall out of love". But in my opinion as someone who never stopped loving their significant other when she "fell out of love", it really comes down to effort. You can fall out of love with the person they've become, and you can lose that newness feeling, but real love is effort, and willing to work and keep that love alive. For a lot of people they think the love they feel will always stay the same so when it changes they don't understand or know how to adapt and just cut and run instead of putting in the effort to making it work, it;s also a reason why 50% of all marriages end in divorce, and 2/3 of all divorces happen within 5 years. To many people have unrealistic expectations of love.

3. A lot of people use it as an excuse to make their shitty life choices seem ok in their minds.
