[b]Ariel lin interview nov 10, 2008

Critics have said, this is the first time that Taiwan's GBA has given the Best Actress award to an actress from the idol drama field. This is a total change in direction for them. The 26-year-old Ariel Lin is the lucky recipient of such a historical event.

At the moment, Ariel Lin is in Taiwan filming and has agreed to an interview over the phone. This interview shows us the way she faces life with determination, the way she relies on fate for matters of love and marriage, and her views on her work as an actress of idol dramas.

Working Hard to Support Her Family
The first piece of gold that landed in her hands, she was then told that she has a huge load of debts to bear.

During the telephone conversation, Ariel had just finished filming for the day and her voice sounded tired. However, still she was happily telling the reporter about how she and her mom has been busy moving house recently. After many years of hard work, Ariel had managed to clear her mom's debts and bought a new house. This allowed the whole family to escape their lot, where they have been living in a rented apartment in Luzhou for the past ten years. "Actually, it is not some luxury apartment. It is just enough for my mom, my brother and I, just enough for three of us to live. I have been busy recently with renovations, taking a look at the building materials and discussing with my mom about what materials to use, colours for the window curtains and so forth. My mom is really childish at times! Keep telling me "up to you", telling me that as long as we are together as a family, it doesn't matter where we live. So I told her, she must seriously choose and choose properly, otherwise she may regret if it doesn't look good. Actually, I am really quite happy."

Just as how Ming Dao was best at bargaining in the market when he was younger, this generation of idol drama stars seem to come from families that are not in the lap of luxury. Ariel too. Ariel reveals that her parents divorced when she was young but her mother had lied that her father was working in China. Her parents who had been separated for 10 years, was finally formally divorced when she was in her second year in high school. Only then was she told the truth by her mom. When she was in high school, her mom suddenly had a stroke but Ariel did not call her dad. "I, alone, brought my mom to the hospital while pulling my younger brother along. I was simultaneously handling a whole variety of complicated administrative procedures, communicating with the doctor, soothing my younger brother's emotions while consoling myself. I started to discover that there aren't many things that I can rely on in times like these, I must rely on myself.

She earned her first sum of money for acting in "True Love 18" while studying Korean in National Chengchi University. What was dramatic was that as she was about to discuss with her mother about finances, her mother told her about the huge debts that the family had incurred. "It was, so to speak, a total shock to my system! I found out that my mom had been struggling really hard all these years. Her salary was too little and she needed to feed two kids. She over-extended the credit limit of over 10 credit cards, robbing Peter to pay Paul, incurring interest over interest, and had a debt of over tens of millions of Taiwan dollars." The 17 year-old Ariel Lin grew up overnight and took over the burden of supporting her family from her mom.

Because of such a past, many people have come to regard Ariel Lin as a "tragic but inspirational main actress". Ariel herself does not deny that these dramatic happenings in her life had a huge impact upon her. For example, she is often casted as an unlucky but strong girl from a poor family. In ISWAK, Ariel was huddled in a dark corner of the hospital, holding the telephone handset with much fear and trembling, so overwhelmed with fear that she could not dial a single number. Finally, she broke down in tears, bringing back a flash from the past. "Sometimes, an actress has to capture inspiration from her own life, or from the lives of others." However, she still harbours some rather complex feelings towards the use of credit cards. "I hate to use credit cards. If I use my credit card, I would pay the bank immediately and would not allow the bank to charge me a single cent of interest."

Nevertheless, when the reporter tries to probe the topic of her father, Ariel's tone of voice lightened and told the reporter after a moment of hesitation: "My dad ferries me to and from work every day. In the car, we will discuss what bread is most delicious, or how to bake pineapple buns, etc. I have been living with my mom and my brother for over 20 years. I hope to recapture the time that I have lost with my dad. I will also communicate his concern for us to my brother. I hope that my attitude may be able to influence my brother to accept him as well."

Managing her Love Life
Loves romance, Will never show anyone the image of a hassled housewife.

Ariel Lin has the image of being cute and lively. However in real life, she has a set of rigid habits. For example, her cosmetics must be placed in a particular order, facing front. Her room must be re-decorated within a certain period of time. Her jewellery and shoes must be neatly ordered and classified, etc. There has been speculations that it is due to taking on the burdens of her family too young, and having a dysfunctional family background. This caused Ariel to age beyond her years, and caused some to infer that she may be disappointed in the institution of marriage. Ariel strongly denies this. "No. I am not against marriage. I am still looking forward to a happy and fulfilling marriage. I have been acting in many dramas. The kind of love found in them has many advantages and have influenced my thinking." However, when talking about actual marriage plans, Ariel's answer seem to reveal some pessimism: "My mom is very traditional in some ways. She is anxious about my marriage prospects. In addition, my younger brother already has a partner. My mom has been rather giving me more pressure. I also feel that I will eventually get married and have kids. However, I have no plans for that yet. I think that perhaps the year which my doctor tells me that I ought to have kids soon or it will be too late, when I am undergoing my health check. At that time, perhaps I will have to get married and immediately have children.

With regards to love, Ariel reveals that her nature is one that loves romance and one who loves to create romance. "I am a person who would absolutely want romance. I will never appear in front of the person I love in the image of a hassled housewife. Furthermore, I believe that romance needs to be created. The sweetness of the feelings of love are to be regarded similarly. You need both parties to diligently pay attention to it. This is of great importance to me. For example in the past, I would always give something I have made with my own hands to my boyfriend for his birthday. I have made desserts, as well as other useful items." Her most memorable relationship occurred when she was in university. The senior whom she had liked for many years, piggy-backed her while climbing the wood-path up the southern mountains. He spread a table-cloth at the hill-side and gave her a birthday cake to cut while admiring the Taipei's night scenery. "From the time we fell in love till the time we broke up, we completed all the stages of love. Such is the purity of our feelings while we were students. That should be the most memorable experience of my student life."

Career Development
Idol Dramas begs for change, now holds greater significance for reality.

Other than marriage, Ariel's mom has also been dissatisfied with Ariel's acting career. "She has always been worried about my development in the entertainment circle. The night of GBA, she wasn't that happy. That afternoon, she had seen a Golden Retriever being abused on the streets. She was feeling horrible about it. Therefore, she did not watch television and missed my walk down the red carpet, as well as me presenting the awards. Luckily, she was watching when I went on stage to receive the award." However, Ariel has her own opinion with regards to this career: "When I was in my first and second year of University, I was still thinking of just trying out acting. However, when I was in my third year, I had made a decision to continue acting. If the audience does not mind me too much, I would like to act till I'm really old." She thinks that it is possible to gain something from an acting career. Other than financial gains such as an increase in her acting fees, advertisement fees, etc; there is a growing appreciation for emotions: "The entertainment circle is able to encapsulate life experiences. Sometimes, one little thing can represent 20 years of your life experience. Every actor's life experience is the resource from which we draw inspiration for our performances. This is particularly evident in my case."

As for her future career path, Ariel Lin expresses her hope to have more opportunities to act in movies, to widen her acting horizons, "If I want to change my image, there is a greater of chance of that happening in movies. However, the role of a rich, spoilt girl is probably not very suitable for me. When a young person has had many challenges in her life, she develops a greater fight and determination in her. I can handle atypical roles better. Now, my greatest wish is to take on a role of a historical figure, the kind of role that requires one to act a wide age span within the show. "

Lin Yi Chen is very frugal, has never bought a brand-name bag

Zheng Yuan Chang in GTV’s [Love or Bread] attempts to act for the first time as a lazy** man, owing a large amount of debts, as a result being violently beaten up by the underground money lenders, who also try to drown him in a bathtub. Golden Bell queen of dramas Lin Yi Chen, on yesterday’s ‘Spicy Tien Hou Temple’ show, talked about past deeds of saving {money}, even Li Ching was surprised.

Xiao Zhong said that although that scene only took 10 minutes to film, because he has long arms and long legs, having to fit into the bathtub is already very painful. Then, he had to hold his breath and when he felt like he was almost about to die, the director still had not shouted [Cut]. Even better is that, when he is about to have no more breath, Lin Yi Chen appears on the scene as the [Beautiful Heroine], immediately performing artificial respiration to save his life. Xiao Zhong says with a laugh, filming kissing scenes and filming artificial respiration scenes are completely different, [Kissing scenes would have the tongue extending, while artificial respiration is blowing air into your throat, air coming in with every blow, lungs feeling like they will explode; very uncomfortable.]

Pix pix joe on bathtub

Xiao Zhong filming [Love or Bread]; for the first few episodes he does not stop trying to avoid being beaten up by creditors, very much like he was shooting an action movie. He said, in his real life, he has never had the experience of hiding from debt. He feels that if people have to borrow money from underground money lenders as a last resort, they may have their own reasons, but the creditors’ use of violence to collect debts, is definitely not advisable. But in the drama he purely loves vanity, buying brand-name items until in debt, indeed deserving to be beaten up.

While on the show Lin Yi Chen said that as a child her family financial situation was not very well-off, and so developed her habit of saving, and has never bought brand-name bags. Her handbags are all gifts from friends or her manager. Li Ching prepared a number of brand-name bags on the scene to let the people shout out prices. Bryant Chang bought an LV bag worth $1000NT, but Lin Yi Chen did not bid even once. When Li Ching jokingly asked [Is it because it doesn’t appeal to you?], she said, [Too expensive].

She revealed that most expensive things she has ever bought in her life are the house for her family to live in, and a gold necklace. It turns out that that gold necklace was the last object that her grandfather left to her mother, but was later pawned off because of the family finances, [After earning money I bought a replica of the gold necklace to give to my mother], causing the guests on the scene to have runny noses after hearing it.

Li Ching revealed another little secret about the Golden Bell Awards, expressing that at the time the two were very fatefully sitting next to each other. After Li Ching went onstage to receive the Best Show Host award, she said to Lin Yi Chen, [It will be your turn in a moment]. She did not expect the sentence to come true, causing Lin Yi Chen to say, [Too coincidental!].

Ariel Lin, with farmer's life, doesn't get black circles however hard she works

Ariel Lin, in CTV and GTV's idol drama They Kiss Again, plays a dim-witted Xiang Qin, who is put into miserable situations. There was one scene where she had to help a grandmother wipe her nasal mucus. Made with rubber (髮膠), these thick nasal mucus looked almost real and stuck to her hands, making it hard for her to continue acting this scene.

In the drama, Ariel Lin plays a nurse taking care of patients. Outside of the drama, she is a very healthy child. Whenever she goes to the hospital, it is only for the annual checkup. Although she spends long hours acting late into the night, she doesn't have any dark circles around her eyes, sagging skin, or acne problems. In the same drama, Candice Liu (the one who plays Liu Nong 留農) envies her good skin. Recently, they went to see a Chinese doctor, Candice curiously asks the doctor 'why doesn't Ariel have imbalances?' As a result, the doctor takes one look at Ariel and says that she has a "farmer's life" (種田的命), like a farmer, Ariel then says, preserving the freshness of food is the most important.

Ariel had just obtained Taiwanese television's highest form of recognition – the GBA Best Actress Award, and consolidates her position as Taiwanese Idol Drama's top actress. Seven years after her debut, Ariel is no longer the little girl-next-door. However, she remains frank and straightforward. In the ISWAK drama series, Ariel's most memorable portrayal of the main female protagonist, Xiang Qin, is of her inability to live independently and her muddle-headedness in committing the simplest of errors. However in real life, Ariel is very mature; she is able to manage her own finances. As she does not invest in stocks and shares, the recent financial turmoil has little effect upon her. She knows how to save for a rainy day; at 26 years old, she has already made financial plans for her retirement. She doesn't like to use credit cards, and even if she does use it, she would clear her credit card bills promptly at the end of each month. Her famous quote being, "Absolutely cannot let the banks earn this type of interest." When she is not filming, Ariel is not as lively as she is portrayed on-screen. She loves to watch movies at home and loves to read. Occasionally, she acts like a typical young girl. When in a good mood, she would be dancing by herself in her own room, or sing karaoke with her friends. Her principle in friendship is "relationship between friends are as insipid as water". This is the Ariel that has consented to be interviewed, the Ariel outside the glare of GBA and outside of her title of top actress.

Dad, Mom, and Brother
Although she comes from a single-parent family, Ariel says: "Actually, I am not sad about it." She said that she has been in contact with her father all these years, except that contact is not very frequent. It only became more frequent last year. There were copious media coverage of father and daughter cycling together to lose weight, allowing us to see the warmth of their relationship. On the day of GBA, Ariel's father was at the grounds just outside of the GBA auditorium, watching the entire proceedings from the large screen there. Ariel's father is very happy about Ariel's win. However, Ariel seem to have gotten used to her father's pride in her achievements: "He is always like that. It is not as if he was only proud of me when I entered the entertainment circle. Since I was young, he always boasts about his own daughter."

Father and daughter had been spending more time together since last year. Ariel says that at her age, she hopes to be able to restore the relationship between them. "In the beginning, it was inevitable to have some awkwardness. Although you can't actually say that we are friends now, we are both trying our hardest to repair our relationship."

It was 8pm when Ariel was being interviewed. Her manager, Zhou Mei Yu said that she is working that day and the interview had to take place between two schedules. I had thought that Ariel must have been tired after such a long day and would not be in the mood to talk. So I was feeling a little guilty when asking about her father. However, Ariel was very open and generous in her answers.

To Ariel, restoring her relationship with her father is "hoping that I can try harder to understand my dad, and to allow my dad to understand me a little better." When asked if her father would give her a present when she got her GBA, she smiled and answered, "He won't. Neither would mom and brother. Rather, I would have to buy a present for my dad. I'll buy whatever he likes. For example, gym equipment and stuff like that. A whole set of gym equipment is rather expensive. However, as long as he likes it, it is ok."

Ariel and her mother had been dependent on each other for survival. Among all the stories that has been circulating, the most famous is the touching story of the "gold necklace incident". When Ariel's grandfather died of lung cancer, he gave Ariel's mother a gold necklace. However, as Ariel's mother had to single-handedly bring up two children, the financial burden was tremendous. In her most difficult moments, Ariel's mother pawned this gold necklace but kept its box and its certificate as proof of ownership. When Ariel started earning money, she took this certificate to the goldsmith to fabricate the exact copy of that necklace for her mother's 50th birthday. After GBA, the first person Ariel called was her mother. However, Ariel's mom saw a dog being abused that day and as she is a dog owner herself, she was extremely distressed and did not watch TV. She therefore missed Ariel's walk down the red carpet and Ariel's presenting of awards. Luckily, she caught Ariel receiving her award on TV. However, even if she had not won, Ariel does not feel as if she had let her mother down. This is because, Ariel's mother had never been very agreeable to Ariel being in the entertainment business. "She always feels that I entered the entertainment circle in order to ease the family's financial pressures. Therefore she had never been at ease with my development in this business. She only hopes that I can be happy and even told me that we should find a way to get the money to breach my contract, that way I would be able to go for further studies and do what I like to do. However, I told her that I really do quite like dramas. Only then I could put a halt to these ideas of hers. That is why she is not too concerned whether I win this award or not."

Ariel first entered the entertainment circle because of her brother. She first entered the "Miss Rapid Transit" pageant in order to win the prize money so "I can buy my younger brother a computer". This time, upon winning GBA, Ariel smiled and said that her brother feels that his contribution is the greatest, "Previously when I was in a programme with him, he said that I will definitely win the GBA. He feels that it is because of those words that had protected me, and allowed me to win. Therefore he took credit for me winning this award." It sounds like Ariel loves her brother very much. Her brother, Lin Wei Sheng, had just come back from France after studying about restaurant catering. When asked if Ariel will give money for him to open a restaurant, she answered, "Not at the moment. Loving him and wanting to help him does not mean giving him money. I think I still need some to observe to see if he is really able to make it himself."

Earning money, saving money, and spending money.
Ariel is famous in the entertainment circles for being thrifty. Ariel averages an income of RMB2500 per month. Because she has been so busy, she has little opportunity to spend. Moreover, Ariel does not have the habit of wearing branded clothes. Other than that, even when she is eating, she would habitually start calculating the cost of the ingredients. She is one of those who scrimps and saves in the entertainment industry.

Ariel does not have a habit of spending money indiscriminately. Not only does she seldom use credit cards, she doesn't even have her own credit card. What she has is a supplementary card from her mother. She feels that after using credit card, she still has to pay credit card bills. This feels as if she has to pay her bills twice and therefore does not like the feeling of using credit cards. Moreover, she doesn't like the feeling of paying bills. Even if she uses her credit card, she would pay her bills promptly that very month, saying "absolutely will not let the banks earn this kind of interest".

Other than earning money and saving money, Ariel also has plans on letting money earn money. She would normally split her savings into five portions; fixed deposits, current account deposits, savings account, foreign currencies, and investment-linked insurance. Because her investment is in foreign currencies and not in bonds, so even with the current global financial upheavals, Ariel is not worried. She is a person who plans carefully for her future. She is already making financial preparations for her future. "I need to save. So that when I am 40 or 50, or if I retire from the entertainment circle, or if I fall ill, I have something to fall back on." Ariel says that because her brother was learning about catering in France, she hopes that she may be able to live in France after her retirement. So, she is saving in hopes of emigrating to France and opening a restaurant there.

Other than her dreams of opening a restaurant in France, she has a personal "fund" that takes into account funds for marriage, funds for her children's education, pension funds for her family members, etc. Although she needs to save a lot, Ariel says that it is a good thing to have a little money that may be able to help the disadvantaged, at an opportune time. She feels that it is very important to help the less privileged. Therefore although she does not have the habit of lending money to others, she will not shirk her civic duty to do charity.

Of course, Ariel has her own expenditure. She loves to read. Although the speed at which she reads is by far slower than the speed at which she buys books, she still insists on buying books. She has almost finished decorating the luxury apartment on which she had spent tens of millions of Taiwanese dollars and will move in at the end of this month. Ariel says that the most distinctive feature of this house is that two walls of her room is lined with bookshelves. "Because I love to buy books and collect books. The encyclopaedias and fairy tales that I loved when I was young, I have kept them till now. So I need a lot of shelf space." As for the new house, Ariel frankly said, "There is a sense of achievement." So regardless of how busy she gets while filming, she would still look into the details of the renovation of the new house. In order to decorate this little "territory" well, she would of course not able to be too frugal. Ariel said: "I have given my opinion about the building materials. When I was filming in Hangzhou, my brother had to send me photographs of door handles. Of course I had to decide about my own room as well. My room is decorated in my favourite Victorian style. That is, richly ornamental without being overly complicated."

Travelling is also another hobby which she spends much money on. In October 2007, Ariel self-funded her stay in America for a month, combining her love for travelling and her love for learning into one. It was said that Ariel and her housemate rented a two-room apartment near Times Square that cost USD2,500 each. So this New York trip wasn't cheap at all. Upon her return, she published "Ariel Lin's New York Big Apple Diary" which is believed to have recouped quite a bit of her expenses. When speaking about publishing, Ariel was a little embarrassed when she said, "Didn't you ask me just now what I would have done if I was not in the entertainment industry? I thought of it! I hope to be an author."

Good Friends, Dead Friends and Comrade-in-arms
Soon after Ariel Lin and Rainie Yang started working for the same TV station, there were news of the two friends falling out with each other. It was said that it all started because Rainie was laughing about how Ariel was copying her hairstyle, behind Ariel's back. The two friends then held a grudge against each other and grew apart. We asked Ariel if Rainie really said those words. Ariel said: "I would of course choose to believe my friend." Are they still friends? "Of course. Perhaps my definition of friendship and the way I interact is different from what everybody expects, that is why everyone misunderstood. I am not the kind to call my friends often on the phone. Usually I communicate by phone messages." Ariel said that she was sitting very near Rainie during GBA and was talking to her throughout the show. Moreover, she also received Rainie's congratulatory message after GBA.

Other than that, Ariel has also not forgotten her good friend, Xu Wei Lun, who had passed away last year due to a car accident. Although she was not very well-prepared when she was receiving her award on stage and missed mentioning Xu Wei Lun during her acceptance speech, Ariel said that she did silently speak to Wei Lun about it during the post-award celebration. Moreover, she would be visiting Xu Wei Lun in the cemetery privately with a few friends.

Her third collaboration with Joe Cheng, "Love or Bread" is currently being filmed. Although the media had always wanted these two together, and fans have longed for the day when the feelings between the two may develop deeper over time, Joe has also continuously demonstrated his love for her in public, and even Joe's father had stepped forward to "force the marriage" by expressing his satisfaction with Ariel, but Ariel still used the phrase "old comrade-in-arms" to describe her relationship with Joe Cheng.

In fact, the two of them match very well. Both have the same views on money, both do not like to spend money indiscriminately, both have the habit of splitting their savings into five portions, and both do not like to use credit cards. Other than their views on money, they also share the same dreams for their future. Joe Cheng has said that he hopes to open a restaurant after his retirement. And Ariel had planned to open a restaurant in France in future. What is most unusual is that they both fit each other's description of their ideal partners. Joe Cheng likes someone who is "filial, understanding, and who is optimistic in the face of difficulty." Basically, within the entertainment circle, has publicly admitted that Ariel fully fits his description. Ariel, in return, says "a man who is sometimes childish." Joe Cheng fits this description well. But till now, the two of them has not tried to date in public. The protagonists may not be anxious, but onlookers are extremely anxious about this matter. Ariel is asked if she would consider dating Joe, she said, "We are too familiar with each other. Wouldn't it be strange to date each other?"

Reporter's Notes:

Lin Family's Girl
Perhaps we have watched too much of Ariel's portrayal of the muddle-headed little girl on screen. With regard to her title as GBA Queen or Top Actress of Idol Dramas, we kept feeling that such titles is not really in accord with her person. Even after winning the GBA, she is still the same Ariel. She still treats people with the same sincerity, courteous, and still will draw clear boundaries to protect herself. After chatting with her aimlessly for a while, I am starting to feel that her personality and her appearance has a huge difference. She is mature, steady, independent, and stands by her own principles. She definitely thinks before she speaks. And her fast response time clearly demonstrates that she is a very clever girl.

She says that she idolises Maggie Cheung within the entertainment circle. Such an answer is not surprising. Many popular young starts say that too. However, the reason why Ariel idolises her is not the usual acting skills, but for the way she conducts herself. This is rather unusual. She has had a very smooth journey in the entertainment industry thus far. But when you see how she diets in order to stay photogenic on-screen, and how she battles with her "bread-bun" face, one wishes that she would be able to save enough money soon, and open a restaurant in France with her brother, and live a life of good food.

Ariel Lin and Joe Cheng are like knowing each other since their previous life
Last night [Love or Bread] just aired its episode 3 but during yesterday afternoon signing session in South Park , Tainan , when the fans were being asked to guess Lin’s Chen’s character [Zhen Shan Mei] clasped her hands together, is her right thumb on the top or left thumb on the top? In the end all the fans were able to guess it right, of course it is her right thumb on the top, emotions first! Ariel Lin takes on the role of 'Aids Angel'; Kisses AIDS-infected babies
Source: Shangdu.com
Date: Tuesday, 2 December 2008

On the World Aids Day on the 1st of December, Ariel Lin Yi-Chen (林依晨) took on the role of an 'Aids Angel', hugging a group of Aids stricken babies, hoping that the wider community would be more understanding and help such babies. She felt very sorry that babies suffering from Aids would be ostracised by society, hence she hugged and kissed the babies in front of everyone. She said: "This is a very natural way of interacting with babies, and it is also a very safe way. I hope everyone can change their opinions and views, and accept them with warm and open arms."

In the event, Ariel massaged the babies' faces and chest, even kissing their faces and mouths, showing her warmth and acceptance of them in the most straightforward way, "Bodily contact with them does not transmit the virus, even if you exchange saliva with them, you will only get the virus if it reaches 700cc, provided of course there isn't any open wounds."

A doctor expressed that kissing Aids infected babies on their mouth is equivalent to shaking hands with normal people, and would not transmit the Aids virus in anyway. The ways that the virus can actually be transmitted is through sexual contact with an Aids infected person, and through shared needles. As long as there is no open wounds, kissing an Aids infected patient would not mean any danger to anyone.

Ariel's Merry Christmas
Article from FANS magazine - Dec. 2008
Translated by catalie @ http://asianfanatics.net

Ariel Lin, who just received the 2008 43rd Golden Bell Best Actress award, was the expected and most deserving winner. Don't be mistaken by how steady and calm she was on stage during her acceptance speech, deep inside she is really a very romantic little girl!

Talking about the very important Christmas in December, there was happiness across her whole face, and when mentioning the Christmas she spent in New York two years ago, she even more frequently let slip an expression of happiness.

Music & Message: Christmas is approaching. Will you use a Christmas carol ringtone on your mobile phone or send Christmas wishes to your friends?

Actually, I don't really care about ringtones but during Christmas, exchanging gifts is a must! I remember in high school, I spent a lot of money on a Christmas tree for our house, put up lots of decorations and also invited many friends over so we could play the game of exchanging gifts. However, many years have passed so I don't remember what gifts I prepared at the time. They probably weren't very special, so I don't really remember, haha. When I was studying abroad in New York, I also bought many decorations and a Christmas tree. I love these little things that give off so much Christmas spirit, I especially can't resist the glittery ones. However because Taiwan doesn't have as much of a Christmas atmosphere, I left the Christmas tree at my aunt's house in America instead of bringing it home. I hope I can return to America soon so I can feel that Christmas spirit again. Usually I'm not the person who actively sends out text messages and also when I receive them, I won't really reply. However I love keeping Christmas cards. Since buying the "affection for the blind" [?] cards in primary school, I fell in love with cards. That's why when I was studying abroad in New York, it was coincidentally Christmas too, so I went out and bought many many Christmas cards, I was very happy! I also love to look around Taiwan's Eslite card exhibition!

E-card: How do you feel about e-cards replacing traditional Christmas cards?

I have never ever sent a Christmas e-card before, and have never received one either. I feel that traditional cards are have more personal and memorable feeling to them. When giving cards to friends and family, I will always write them myself. However, maybe because Taiwan's Christmas spirit isn't as strong, I actually don't write out many cards. Even if I have 1000 cards sitting beside me, most I simply keep and collect. The cards I write most are birthday cards! (Reporter's note: Ariel really loves writing cards, doesn't she! While her brother was studying in France, Ariel as a sister always sent him postcards, so sweet of her!)

Year of 2008: This year, what accomplishment has given you the biggest sense of achievement?

Using my own capability to buy a new house, giving my family and I a cozy home environment.

Rest: If you had the chance to rest in December, what would you like to do or where would you like to go?

(Ariel suddenly felt extremely happy and screamed) I want to go to America to celebrate Christmas! My aunt lives in America so I really want to go to their house again for Christmas! If I celebrated Christmas in America, I would definitely have to go to visit my friends so I can really experience that traditional, happy, warm feeling.

Romance: Are you a romantic person? What is the most romantic thing you have done?

I am a romantic person because when I am dating someone, I will often like to create surprises. I might not tell him at all that I am going to see him, then suddenly go to find him and give him a surprise!

Church: Previously getting married at a church in Guam in "They Kiss Again", will you want to get married in a church in the future?

If it doesn't concern religion, of course I want to! However, I wouldn't want to go to a spendid, majestic, over-luxurious church to get married, just a small church that's warm and has a nice atmosphere, then I would be satisfied.

House: You belong to the class of entertainers who were born in the '80's and already have houses. What did you take into consideration the first time you bought a house? If you bought a house in the future, what criteria would it have to meet? In the future, would you like to be a landlady and rely on rent as income?

When I bought this house, I considered the surroundings because a house will affect one's spending and lifestyle habits. Also, the place must be convenient for work. My current house is very close to where I work and do makeup. It is also close to Sun Yat-sen memorial hall where my mother can release dogs. I've heard people say that you must not sell off the first house you buy as it is considered the base, where your wealth is stored. If I was to buy another house, I would consider the internal layout. I hope it looks like a Japanese house where the centre of the house leads to hallways in all four directions, also separated by walls, so that it feels as though there is another world in the centre; my current house doesn't have a garden or view. Most importantly, the district should be good. If I were to buy a second house, I hope it has plenty of space so my mother can look after dogs and pigs, as well as plant flowers, ha! My mother really wants to keep pigs! In the future, I would like to be a landlady but I can be very extreme and also contradictory. I want to lease to big corporate booses or to poor students because I would lease to them at a low price but also arrange everything very nicely so they get the feeling of home.

Reception: Whose greeting would you most like to receive this Christmas?

(Ariel reveals a very sweet smile and uses a doll-like, teasing voice to say~) The person I like, hehe.

Improvement: This year has almost ended, the new year is fast approaching. In what aspect would you like to improve in?

Probably my quality of work! I hope to have the opportunity to act in an interesting movie, or like Joe, participate in a theatrical drama, I really envy this point about him.

Santa Claus: In your heart, who would be most suited to act the role of Santa Claus?

Colonel Sanders [or in Ariel's words: Grandpa Kentucky]

Time: If you could alter the established 24hour day, how many hours would you hope for?

I don't wish to change this because if a day had 48 hours, but we could only live for 40 years, I wouldn't like that either. It would be better to leave it as it is.

Mother: What sort of mother is your mother? How close are you two?

She isn't afraid of kissing me haha, just joking! It doesn't get to the point of playing tonsil hockey, if it came down to that, it would be quite nauseating! However, if she wants to kiss me, I'll let her kiss me. Previously when I returned from working in China, she hugged me as soon as she saw me and then kissed me, ha. Sometimes when I'm taking the stairs with my mother and I'm walking in front of her, she will sneakily pinch my butt, haha. However, her and my younger brother aren't as close. My mother and younger brother's relationship is like older sister and younger brother. Sometimes they will be so loud as though they were quarrelling, very interesting.

What I've learned in the year 2008
Ariel Lin plowing in mid year; harvesting by year's end
Lin Yi Chen has celebrated her 26th birthday on 29th October, two days later, she won the Golden Bell Best Actress Award through her role [They Kiss Again], she didn’t cry, she was very calm while delivering her acceptance speech: [I will use my life to perform and continue to work hard. I don’t feel guilty for getting this award.] Two weeks later, Yi Chen is getting ready to move into her dream that she has been dreaming for 26 years, getting her very first home. Having the friendliness and adorableness of a girl next door, Lin Yi Chen’s inner self is more mature and steady than her physical appearance. She's taking one slow and steady step at a time in reaching her goals. During the journey, she has waited, she has been patience, she has been giving her full-forced and she has been baring the responsibilities, pressures and work loads that are beyond her age. At the end of the year when she looked back to 2008, Yi Chen smiles and received the hard earned rewards that she deserved.

I learned how to move forward together with my father who has once again appeared back in my life
After 20 years, finally able to have the chance to compensate on the hiatus and estrangement between a father and a daughter. This year, the time that I have spent with my father will be the total summation for the past. My parents divorce when I was 5 but not until I was in my high school years that my mom told me about the truth. Before this, my impression of my father was just a few clips of here and there, only know that he is a wanderer, reckless, someone who really knows how to make himself happy. My father is a car salesman, 2 to 3 years ago he has come across some financial difficulties and he has expressed that he was hoping that he could be the one who will pick me up or drop me off from my work. Then the travel expenses can be used to pay as my father's daily allowance. This year during the months of May and June, my father and I have decided to meet in a coffee shop to discuss about the matter again, I think that I should be doing this since I have the ability so I agreed. Seeing my father weeping right at the spot, my heart feels quite emotional too. Starting in July, my father has become my driver plus bodyguard during my work days. His memory is not that good so every time when I see him writing down my schedule in his notebook, it will reminds of his handwriting that I’ve come across in the phone book when I was small. After all these years, now only I know my father likes to eat pineapple bun. When we are free, we will go to Da-Jia Riverside Park to ride bicycles together. We have lost a lot of quality times together. Last time I will just be blamimg him for everything but now while I am blaming him about what he has done for me, at the same time, I will also asked myself what I have done for him? I want to thank the god for allowing us to have the chance to compensate this lost, allowing him to appear into my life again, we will continue to move forward together.

I have learned to broaden my horizon when I looked at the world
This year the happiest moment will be the time when I get to sign the contract for getting my home. Getting my own home has been my dream since I was young. After 2 or more years, looking through hundreds of apartments, finally able to find the apartment that I like near the National Dr Sun Yat Sen Memorial. It was through the recommendation of Mr Security Guard that I was able to get it at a low price. And now the furnishing is almost finished, soon my family will be able to move in comfortably. I am able to design and plan out according to my own ideas, taking close participation in every tiny details, it was such a rewarding feeling. This year, I am very happy that I get to receive such a small personal reward but also aware that the entire environment is being surrounded by lost and helplessness. Everyone has been worrying about their current status and their future, busy looking at the small boundary that they have set for themselves without taking notice of all the happenings in every corner of the world, I feel that a lot of things are started off with momentum. Look around and see what other places are doing and thinking, maybe then it will also allow us to have a new and bigger view. If we are just looking at it from the inside it will easily leads us to a dead end.
