i can give you more info than you could probably hope in this matter.

you must go back to BEFORE 1644.

in 1592-1598, Hideyoshi unified the japanese islands then decided he will become emperor of all asia (sound familiar??). in order to conquer china he needed safe passage through korea. he sent word through the nobles on tsushima (that was the only way for "barbarian" japanese to talk to the korean court-- there were little formal relations w/ the japanese as they were perceived as pirates, indeed the name "nippon" is a modern thing cuz in ALL chinese and korean literature for 1000s of years, they were called "wae-ran" or "midget-pirates"). unfortunately the Tsushima nobles sent mixed messages to both sides, and the japanese landed an enourmous army, while the koreans were caught TOTALLY unawares & were easily run over. eventually citizen militias fought them off until the chinese (ming) arrived to support them. they eventually stalemated & w/ hideyoshi's sudden death, eventually the invasion was called off. however the Ming dynasty (who had thrown out the Yuan dynasty, or the Mongol dynasty, seen as "foreign") was SEVERLY weakend by this (as of course the koreans were devastated). this left a considerable power vacuum in what i call the Power Triangle (of Pyongyang, Harbin, and Beijing --- look on a map). The Power Triangle seems to be where most of the military activity seems to occur over 1000s of years of asian history. they were ALWAYS fighting over this area.

by 1616 the manchus resentful of they way the chinese had moved through their land during this war, set up a new dynasty, using the older name of "Jin" a previous dyanasty which was destroyed by the mongols centuries earlier (1100-1200s). ten years later (1626) they changed it to "Qing". by 1636, they invaded korea w/ a million men, but were lured in by a much smaller force and eventually destroyed. nevertheless, the next year they still invaded china. by 1644, they had humiliated korea by kidnapping a prince (garnering a surrender and suzerainty away from the ming to themselves), and had conquered all of china (due to a northern chinese general who perhaps correctly assessed that the manchus were better fit than the hans militarily).

this caused a lot of people ESPECIALLY in the south, especially in canton (guangdong) where consequently hong kong is, to rebel and set up a post-ming dynasty. w/in about 40 years this was all surpressed, the shaolin temple was burned, martial arts was outlawed, and all chinese men had to adopt the manchu hairstyle (w/ the shaved front and long cue in back) or lose their head!

the corruption and insular isolationism of the late Qing dynasty and esp. the empress dowager in the 19th and early 20th century were seen as one of the lowest points in chinese history, as hong kong was lost to the british, (macau to the portuguese, etc etc) in the Opium Wars, and in general for the first time in world history, china fell behind the west. the chinese blame the manchus for this, so that's why they play the villians in modern movies coming out of hong kong.

as a result chinese today disdain the qing dynasty and still see it as almost a "foreign" dynasty like the Yuan (mongol) dynasty. HOWEVER, what they fail to realize is that ACTUALLY china was at its PEAK under the qing, and in fact the old Qing dynasty was LARGER than even present day PRC!!!!

does any of this help? shall i clarify anything ??

like a veritable kung fu orgy!

where did you get shaolin vs. wutang? i only have it from a videotape i dubbed off a rental (this is the one with adam cheung, where they show chang san feng the founder of taichi and wutang-pai fighting the 18 monks then slashing the big character that says "buddha" right, this is the one you mean?)

also do you have the restored version of 8 diagram pole fighter? cuz in my original bootleg version they cut out how the father dies, it only shows him get hit by arrows. but in the original restored version (now available through celestial pictures) he actually jumps up and bashes his brains into that big stone tablet he dies next to THEN gets shot by arrows.

also in challenge of the masters, my old bootleg version cut out the entire opening lion dance sequence (opening credits). in the restored version (i don't know how much longer) it's called Martial Club.

and lastly YOU MUST SEE master killer 3 (as far as i know it was never released in the u.s. cuz it wasn't made until 1983!). it has this INSANE wedding fight sequence where san te, fang shiyu (fong sai yuk) and his shaolin secular brothers fight like 100 wedding guests. it's probably the BIGGEST fight sequence Lau had done up to that point. if i ever learn how to upload THAT IS THE FIRST MOVIE I'M UPLOADING, IT HAS THE MOST INSANE OVER THE TOP FIGHT SEQUENCES!!!!

by the way, i'm not chinese either, but studied some of their history, especially as pertains to korean history. what's interesting that many people i don't think realize is the constant significance of geo-politics as concerns such a tiny, seemingly insignifcant area of korea.

it was always a hugely important "pawn" between the greater powers of japan and china! think of it, even the sino-japanese war in 1905 was actually fought in korea over korea! even the russo japanese war was also fought over influence in korea (and manchuria).

On challenge mine doesnt show the liondance either I'm looking too upgrade this version. on master killer #3 im going too watch this one day i just gotta find it and buy it. Ive been looking at critic forums but given an expert avise you just given I'll buy it.
