They have to be strong, but likable, most cool guys act like assholes, so a goofy, laid back badass like Luffy or Kenshin is the perfect main guy

anime should definitely vary to mix it up and not get too predictable. sometimes they should wimpy but not whiny, sometimes they should be wimpy and whiny just to make people mad. sometimes they should be cool and arrogant or cool and humble. either way they should have some type of metamorphosis going on to where they improve themselves at the end. sometimes the cool just get cooler.

i agree that he is pretty unique since he was already the strongest when he appeared and also remained unbeaten throughout the series. But his character didnt progess that much.

It's impossible that every main char will be like that so even though i dont like those "wimpy guy becomes strong cause he wants to protect his friends" character they suit more in most cases

Hmm...it's a difficult choice. In shounen action series, I usually like the wimpy main character IF he goes through character growth and becomes strong and cool throughout the storyline. For example, Tsuna from KHR, or Sena from Eyeshield 21. (the two of them are kinda similar, actually...)
But I HATE wimpy main characters in a harem anime. Seriously, I wonder what all those girls see in him and why they're so desperate to get him.

As for cool characters, I usually like them. I like when they're portrayed as a genius or unbeatable in the beginning, but later meet opponents/rivals stronger than them. For example, maybe Takumi from Initial-D or Ryoma from Prince of Tennis. Also these "cool" characters usually go for ONE girl...or actually, it's more like one girl likes the cool guy from the beginning and tries to get his affection. That's much better in comparison to a wimpy guy getting chased by hundreds of pretty girls...

But overall, I like a mixture of both, I guess...a main character who is not exactly wimpy in the beginning, but rather inexperienced. Then he goes through swift character growth as he learns about his own powers, or improves his powers, etc. I guess Allen from D.Gray-Man might be an example of this, or maybe Ichigo from Bleach...But I actually have no clue where Naruto fits into.

I don't really mind either way.
