does it count as hacking if i got into a schools wireless internet with a password? ok bad question it was just dumb luck i was on a wrestling trip staying in some bible thumping school and for thier password i figgured it was jesus related and my first guess was "I Love jesus" which in turn was the password, i guess its easy to read the thoughts of people obsessed with god/ jesus

if the server is programmed correctly then there won't be many buffer overflow holes
but what you would do is send a large packet to the server
so for example...
char data[32];
would make a character array of 32
what happens when you send a packet of 33 bytes? it overflows.

absolutely nothing will happen.
if you send oversized packet server will usually reject it, because now all servers check packet size and just drop bad packets.

now if your good, and the program is vulnerable instead of just crashing you can do something like this...
say i send a packet of....
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDD
(32 A's, 8 D's) (just using as an example
that would over flow the next 8 bytes after the 32bytes of data in memory, so if that was a call to a certain memory address it would go do the offset in memory for that application "0xDDDDDDDD"

even if you are lucky server will not execute your program so easily. yes, your code is in memory but you need to force its execution. and that is what buffer overflow does, you overwrite stack with your value and then make it equal to loacation of your code.
but also you need to know where your code was uploaded and that is not trivial.

basically you do it in this way

you send to server:
<some crap><your code><lots more crap><4byte address of your code>

i would hack my friends for the hell of it. would kinda be fun to see their reaction :>
of course, i don't mean hostile hacking, just like leaving some traces after me like putting "I'm a beeech" as background (maybe not that, but something alike).

im currently a student in university studying Computing Bsc and they are teaching us hacking? i was very confused because why would they want hackers? but hey its fun!

theres different kinds of hackers.
some people study hacking to improve the security. (white hat)
ie. you cant make an anti virus software without knowing anything about exploits and viruses because you don't know how to counter it or WHAT to counter for that sake.

some hacks for fun (red hat if i dont remember wrong?)

some hacks for profit (black hat)

I can't declare myself as very good hacker, but hacking is nothing that you can tell someone how to do.
if you do not invent hacks yourself you are not hacker.

Hmm, I don't think that admitting that you're a hacker in here will do you people any good.

There's a hacker whose been punished for hacking into Miley Cyrus' Email account and leaked her semi-naked pictures on the net.
He said that he doesn't hate her, he said that he's just 'giving the public what they want.' Which is quite funny, then the radio presentor said that this kid will go far in the media business.

Anyway, that's totally irrevelant, but you know, hacking can be quite annoying sometimes, especially if it's being done to you.

well thats not true, i only learnt to hack while going through my ICT course. i had to build mainframes and virtual networks and because i never listen to the teacher, failed this project. had to do catch up classes with a visiting teacher who we could say taught me a few tricks.
