W...I...N...G...S...

(Search)

(Searching...)

( Results 1 - 10 of about 125,000,000 for wings found)

"Shit," I muttered.
I scrolled down the page and scanned. All I saw was sites for a TV series and something about birds.
Groaning, I stretched and scratched my head, frustrated and a bit anxious. Why is this only happening to me? Am I the only human in history to have grown...wings?
I rubbed my aching eyes and glanced at the clock next to the computer.
4:30 am.
I'd been up all night searching for answers, and yet I had found nothing. Books, internet, newspapers, archives, nothing. I even looked up a surgeon who specialized in the field of human deformities and a bird specialist - and got nothing. The bird specialist thought my call was a prank, so that was a fail. And when I carefully re-worded my main question ("Can humans grow wings?") the surgeon got suspicious and hung up on me.
I was at point zero and was ready to crash.
I closed all the windows down and shut the computer off. Sitting there, in the dim light of the dying screen, I felt my wings twitch and shudder. It was extremely weird, I had to admit. They were still skeletons of two small wings and yet I could move them if I concentrated enough. It was like trying to move my pinky toe - I couldn't move it automatically, but I could move it if I concentrated on it and mentally separated it from my other toes. Another odd thing about the wings were that when I pulled on my shirt, they folded by themselves so that no-one could tell if I had wings or not - unless they looked hard enough.
I propped my head into my hands and gave out an annoyed sigh.
"Mother fucking wings," I growled. "Damn those mother fucking wings."
I jumped as a tinkling ring tone shot through the air. Swearing, I pulled my mobile phone out of my jean pocket and checked the caller ID. It was Simon.
Heart skipping a beat, I pressed the green call button and raised the phone to my ear.
"Yeah?"
Hey, it's me.
"I know," I said, softly. "Why are you calling me at this hour?"
I...I had to.
"What?"
I was thinking about what you said...and...I wanted to apologize for behaving the way I did.
My eyebrows shot up in surprise. "And what was that?"
I was acting like a total jerk. I was just shocked, that's all. I mean...we've been friends since we were kids and...and I thought I would be the first person you'd tell...
I leaned back in my chair and nodded. "I was afraid of how you'd feel. How you'd react. And when you...when you walked out on me like that..." I sighed and ran a hand across my mouth. "I thought you were gone for good."
As I said, I was shocked and needed time to think. But you know something Jay?
"What?"
I was feeling somewhat...happy that you told me.
"Huh?"
I don't know. I mean...sure I was happy that you finally told me the truth...but...I don't know. I was happy.
"Really?" I smiled. Simon could be cute at times.
Yeah.
I swung around on my chair, stood up, and plodded over to the dark kitchen for a glass of milk.
Hey, can I see you today?
"What time?"
How about now?
I laughed. "Why so eager?"
I don't know. I just wanted to buy you breakfast I guess. As an apology.
"Sounds awfully like a date," I teased, pouring milk into a tall glass.
A date? Simon fell silent for a while so I decided to put the poor boy out of his misery.
"I'm joking, Si," I laughed. "I'll meet you in an hour then."
He gave out a nervous and somewhat relieved laugh. Sure. In the park?
"Okay, at that bench next to the cafe."
Sweet, I'll see you then.
"Sure thing. Bye."
As we hung up, I wondered why I couldn't tell Simon about my wings.
"I'll tell him when I see him," I assured myself. After all, Angela was in too much shock to help me at all. I didn't have any sedatives, so Angela was blabbing all the way home about birds and aviation and practically planned out my future with my wings for me.
As grateful as I was, I finally managed to get her to calm down and made her promise not to tell anybody.
At that she gave me a glare and said: "What do you think I am, a fucking idiot?" and closed the door on my face.

Continued...

He was sitting there, still and perfect. His blonde hair slithering into his sparkling azure eyes that shone with such intensity that it stole my breath every time I saw him. He was wearing a baggy pair of black jeans and a faded band shirt that hung across his torso, hugging his perfect shape. A loose fitting black jacket hung off his slender frame and his hands snuggled into each pocket, protected from the early morning iciness. The rising sun cast a hot red over his face that made him look flushed and the cool wind licked through his hair, making strands dance around his head. I raised a hand when he saw me approaching and he grinned, standing up and pulling his jeans up awkwardly.
"Yo," I greeted him.
"Hey," he said softly, "how are you?"
I sat down onto the bench, uttering a sigh of relief as my aching shoulders leant against the cool bench, and motioned for him to do the same. "I've been better," I admitted, "but I could be worse."
"I heard you were sick."
"Yeah...but I'm getting better," I smiled at his concern. I was glad to be on good terms with Simon again. I've missed him.
He sat in silence for a while, struggling to find the right words, when a kid ran past singing at the top of his lungs, breaking the strained atmosphere.
"Look Jay, I'm sorry for being such a jerk, I wasn't thinking straight and-"
"-and we've already been through this before," I cut in, with a grin.
Simon gave me a relieved and grateful smile and he laid a hand on my forearm, making me feel nervous from the electricity of the touch.
"Thanks Jay. I'm just amazed that a dick like me has such a great friend like you."
I shrugged bashfully and let out a nervous laugh. "You've been my friend since we were little. It would be seriously stupid of me if I didn't forgive you over something as little as this."
He nodded thankfully and leant back with a sigh of relief, basking in the warm orange glow of the waking sun.
The air was blowing in more stronger now with a bite of iciness and the sky was a clear blue, stretching generously over the horizon, giving way for the huge mass of blazing light that was rising from a deep slumber. Birds twittered and sang at each other as a new day broke out and early morning joggers chatted noisily as they passed through the park. A slow traffic was steadily making way around the city and the world was silently waking up to another peaceful, uneventful day.
A stab of pain suddenly roared through my back and I bit back a yelp. Instead I flinched and grabbed onto the edge of the bench. As it died down I felt a warm dampness slowly spreading across my shoulders and I cursed inwardly. My... wings were bleeding again.
I started to panic. I was wearing a white shirt. What if Simon found out? How would I explain to him? Would he feel cheated that I went to Angela for help first instead of him? Or would he freak out and cast me out?
My breathing had begun to become ragged and heavy and I glanced at Simon, feeling my insides squirm. I had to tell him. But I was goddamn nervous about it. I mean, I was just beginning to understand what was actually happening to me. He was still leaning back with his eyes closed, the sun casting a warm glow on his face.
"Si..." I hissed as another sharp slice of pain raced through my back. I squeezed my eyes shut and I felt Simon's warm hand on my arm. As soon as it disappeared I raised my head and saw his concerned face a few inches away from mine. Don't ask me why, but I had a sudden urge to kiss him right then and there. He looked so goddamn cute.
"Jay? Is it your cold? Do you want me to take you home?" His large blue eyes started to search my dark eyes for answers and I felt myself flush from his sudden attention.
"Uh...I'm fine. I'm just a bit cold that's all. Headache...you know." I straightened up and gave him a grin.
He stared at me suspiciously for a few more minutes, making me turn a brighter red, before taking his black jacket off and handing it to me.
"But...it's yours and it's cold..." I protested weakly. The jacket was black. My shirt was white. My wings were bleeding. I really needed that fucking jacket. But it was only polite to protest.
"Nah," Simon grinned and pushed the jacket more firmly into my hands. "Wear it and give it back to me next time we meet. Okay?"
I nodded gratefully and gingerly slid it on, making sure to hide my back from him. As soon as I tugged it on, I stood up and turned to Simon.
"Si, I'm sorry but I-"
My ringtone pierced through the morning air, making both me and Simon jump.
"Hold on," I said apologetically to him, and fumbled in my jean pocket for the mobile.
"Hello?"
Jay...It's Angela.
"Hey Angela, what's up?"
Something has happened...Something really bad...
She sounded really shaky and upset. I frowned and gripped the phone tightly, feeling my heart rise up into my mouth.
"What's happened, Angela? What's wrong?"
It's Dhianne, Jay...She...she's in the City Hospital...She was in an accident...I tried to stop her but...she wouldn't listen to me...Jay...
"I'm coming," I said curtly and hung up. I swung around to Simon, shoving the phone in my pocket.
"What's wrong?" He said, noting my panicked face.
"It's Dhi. She's been in an accident," I said, feeling my throat choke up. My heart started to pound as a rush of evil thoughts crashed through my brain. What if she was in a coma? What if she couldn't move? What if she was left in a vegetative state? Or worse, what if she was...dead?
"I...I have to go," I promptly spun on my heels and was about to sprint away when I felt Simon grab my arm roughly.
"I've got a car. It's faster," he said, looking as panicked as I was. I nodded, feeling light headed and we both quickly made our way to the carpark.
The whole way there, the only thought that ran through my mind was: Please be alive, Dhi, please be alive. Please be alive Dhi, please be alive. Please be alive Dhi, please be alive...

Continued...

When time stops it leaves you feeling weightless, mindless, emotionless. It makes you feel like air, floating above your own body, watching the chaotic scene from the heavens. It makes you feel like collapsing, like weeping silent tears, like weakly calling for your dear own sister.
I was too weak. Too shocked. Everything was...timeless.
But I didn't collapse. I didn't weep. I didn't call for Dhianne. I just stood there, staring at the operation theater doors, fists clenched and mind blank. My mouth was dry and my throat felt like sandpaper and yet I didn't have enough strength to get myself any water. The air was dry and cold in the hospital and it dried my sweat, chilling me to the bones as I waited.
As I stood I didn't dare move. I had worked myself up so much that I started thinking that if I moved, Dhianne would die. If I drank anything, Dhianne would die. If I ate anything, she would die. If I talked, she would die. And
so on and on. I started doing little rituals in my head and I made extravagant promises to God - I would give up my own life if Dhianne came out alive; I would dedicate my life to charity and God if she was safe; I would give my limbs up if only Dhianne would be okay - until they became so warped and twisted I forced myself to stop.
This torture went on until Simon finally came back from getting some spare clothes and toiletries from our houses - the doctor informed us that it would be a very long operation and that it was best to just go to the motel that was across the road from the hospital. At this rate I doubted I would be sleeping at all - even if I wanted to.
"Hey I'm back," Simon came to my side, breathlessly. His arms were full of bags and he dumped them on the chair next to him. I didn't look at him or even speak to him.
"Jay?"
I trembled.
"Hey it's okay. She's going to be okay."
I turned and glared at him. "How do you know that?" I demanded hoarsely.
He opened his mouth to say something and slowly closed it again. He shrugged lamely. "I...I just know we have to believe that she'll be okay."
I snorted and went back to staring at the doors. "I'm not taking any chances. I'm not raising my hopes up."
I felt a hand on my arm. "Jay, stop talking like that."
"I've already been through this two times and both times I've had my hopes shattered. It'll be easier if I didn't raise my hopes up." To my horror I felt my eyes burn and I bent my head forward so that my hair would hide my eyes. I squeezed them shut and exhaled slowly.
"But she's not dead! Why are you talking like she already is? You're her big brother! You can't just fucking give up on her!" Simon exploded and he pushed me, making me open my eyes in alarm.
I saw him breathing hard and I was shocked to see tears streaming down his face. White hot rage burned in me and I pushed him back, growling. "Don't mess with me. Not now."
"What the fuck? Dhianne needs you in there and all you've done is give up on her! What sort of a brother are you?!"
A red mist came over my eyes and I lunged at him, pushing him against the wall and grabbing the front of his shirt.
"I'm not fucking giving up on her! Don't you fucking dare accuse me of giving up on her!"
As burning pain spread through my chest and as my throat chocked up; as my eyes blurred with hot tears, I threw him onto the ground and I knelt on his chest.
"And fuck you Simon. Fuck you! You wouldn't know what it's like to lose your family because you never had one! Fuck you and your fucking foster mum! Fuck you and your pathetic attempt to fit into this fucking conformity ridden shit hole! Fuck you Simon! Fuck...you..." By this time the tears were hard to ignore. My chest burned with agony and my throat convulsed with pain. tears streamed down my face and the sobs tore out of me angrily. I slid off Simon who looked shocked and slightly scared and I knelt my head, my hair shielding my face away from Simon. As the sobs wracked my body, I didn't feel Simon wrap his arm around me, nor did I hear him murmuring reassurances and soft apologies. I didn't notice the night creeping past nor did I realize I had fallen asleep on Simon; who carried me to a chair and sat with me as the first sun rays broke through the curtained windows in the silent, empty waiting room.

"Jay..."
Voices filtered through the darkness and I brushed them aside.
"Jay...please wake up...Jay...wake up..."
It was Simon's voice. I forced my aching eyes open and I saw a blurry Simon shaking me awake. I blinked and the blurry mist faded. I sat upright in surprise when I saw how scared Simon looked.
"What?" I said in a hoarse whisper. "What's happened? Is it Dhianne?"
I swear to God my heart rate leapt up to 300 beats per minute until Simon shook his head, making me weak at the knees and feeling slightly dizzy.
"Jesus Si...Don't scare me like that."
"Jay...I couldn't wake you." Simon sat next to me and I noticed his pale face.
"What do you mean?" I licked my cracked lips to no avail.
"You wouldn't wake. I tried to wake you an hour ago but when I couldn't I left you."
I sat up and rubbed my aching eyes. "I was tired I guess. What time is it?"
"Jay, I've been trying to wake for the last fifteen minutes. I thought you were dead." Simon looked so serious that I nearly cracked a smile.
"No shit."
"And then you stopped breathing for the last five minutes."
I stood up and the room swayed. I leant against the wall for a minute and when I was steady on my feet I went to the empty reception desk.
"Jay? Please...sit down. We need to get a doctor."
"Yeah we fucking do. What's the fucking time? Why hasn't Dhianne come out yet?" I spun around to see Simon stand up and shrug.
Something felt wrong.
"How long have I been asleep? What happened?" I looked down the hallways but they were empty.
Simon looked around for a clock but obviously couldn't find one. "You fell asleep. I fell asleep. I woke up when the sun rose. So...I guess it's around seven."
"Where's the fucking doctors? The nurses?" I felt my breath hitch in my throat and my stomach churned. Something was seriously wrong.
I quickly walked into one of the hallways and peered into one of the rooms. No patient. Nobody. I did the same for the rest of the rooms. The whole hall was empty.
"Simon!" I called, panic settling in.
He sprinted to me and shook his head, his eyes wide with fear. "No-one in the other hall either. Where the hell is everyone?"
I swallowed and suddenly the room blacked out for a second. The next thing I knew I was on the ground in Simon's arms.
"Jay?"
I pulled myself away from him and stood up on unsteady legs.
"Jay maybe you should sit. Maybe unwind a bit."
I snorted and leant against the wall, waiting for the room to stop spinning.
"What the fuck is happening to me?" I growled.
It wasn't until then that I realized the back of my shirt was damp. I thanked Simon silently for his jacket - which I was still wearing.
It was blood loss then.
"Jay, what's happening? Where is everyone?" Simon stood up slowly and looked around for any signs of life. He looked like a small child, lost and alone.
"I don't know Si. I say we should take a look around the hospital...maybe also around outside, you know...to make sure... before we do anything drastic."
"Yeah...yeah that's a plan," he said, his face regaining some color.
That's what we needed. Order. A plan.
And yet somehow I felt that from this point on, everything, even the world as we knew it, would be thrown off order - and into the dark realms of chaos.

And it was then when a sudden, horrific, sickening thought slammed into me.

Where the fuck was Angela?
