How many would recommend this manga series for a new reader? Also how many volumes are out that are translated to English?

I would definitely recommend this manga. I'd say it's one of the most accurate depictions of a slice of life in high school. The drama is good, the characters are well fleshed out and interesting ( work very nicely together). There are currently 18 volumes in English. It's definitely a good read.

Yeah I am up to volume 11 from B&N now, I think the store though doesn't often restock it though, so I will have to go online to get any more volumes.

I really enjoyed watching the anime, and if you have seen the anime. The anime follows pretty closely to the manga.

General consensus of Kimi ni Todoke:

Albeit, forget 5, the pacing was closer to 1cm per second; but never have I been so happy to be moving so slowly.

I really really REALLY need to get around to buying the volumes again... I got up to 11 since that is where the Anime goes up to, but I really want to read the other 7 volumes.

Kimi ni Todoke has been released in just about every way imaginable at this point including LN's. For me personally, I would always recommend the manga in just about every situation. If there are ever LN's released that flesh out stories like Chizuru and Ryu's relationship or Ayane and Kento's however, I'd be all over those!

For me it matters which came out first... if the manga is based off a LN usually I find the LN better. If it is a LN based off the Manga usually i find the manga better.

If it is some sort of spin off... well matters what the spin off is going over.

Finally ordered Volumes 12 13 and 14. 15-18 I will probably get on my next paycheck. FINALLY catching up to the series!

You'll have some time to read those so don't feel like you need to cram them in fast. After reading volume 19, I checked Amazon for when Volume 20 would be available and it said 12/2/2014. I went ahead and added it to my wish list. One of my favorite series to read.

Yup very good series. Though I think I was spoiled by the fast past, so to speak, of other Shoujo-esque series. Like Say "I Love You" where the getting together and moving along in a relationship happens early on, so the drama and further relationship building can happen afterwards.

Comparing Kimi ni Todoke which took like 7 or so volumes I think for them to actually get together, and... well obviously I haven't read past 11 but from what I understand nothing MAJOR really happens for like 7 volumes AFTER that.
