Well, the VERY first Japanese Song that I can remember off the top of My Head that literally made Me fall in LOVE with the Genre was "Life is like a Boat" by Rie Fu. I believe that it was the very first, or second ED to Bleach. The VERY first Japanese Song I heard however, was from the VERY first Anime I ever watched, period...Azumanga Daioh...The Song I'm speaking about, is it's ED: "Raspberry Heaven" by Oranges & Lemons. <3

Ahhhhhhh, Nostalgia....

uhhh

I think it must have been Zankoku na tenshi no te-ze, the Evangelion OP... That was what prompted me to go watch Evangelion which started the whole anime/japan thing, a few years ago I guess...

Before I got into K-Pop, I had a few Asian songs that I liked. Most of them were anime theme songs though. One of the few that I liked that wasn't from an anime was "Yung Wai" by Buddha Bless. I heard it on the movie "Raging Phoenix". It was playing during my favorite fight scene of the movie and fit so well with the action. As for the K-Pop, "I Love You" by 2NE1, was the one that hooked me.

I may have stumbled over some Asian songs in my childhood because I watched a lot of Anime and played a lot of video-games. But the first time I was aware of Asian music was back in 2007 when through an Anime fan website, I discovered Ayumi Hamasaki an decided to give it a shot. Although the first two songs I listened from her ("Moon" and "fainted") weren't of my taste back then ("fainted" is now one of my favourite songs) I got addicted to "glitter" and from then on I just discovered more and more artists until I eventually got completely addicted. Songs that got me hooked into Chinese music was S.H.E's "Remember" and into K-Pop was 2NE1's and BIGBANG's "Lollipop" (although I knew other artists like Super Junior, SHINee, Boa, Lee Hyori and so on before that)

You know, it's a funny thing. What got me to go looking for koto/shamisen music and enka was actually the work of a Romanian composer. George Zamfir/James Last's "The Lonely Shepherd" is a track I first heard while watching the Kill Bill films, and I adored it so much that I went looking for Japanese flute music thinking that's what it was. In other words, my love of koto/shamisen and enka is pure serendipity.
