The Moon

I think a cool problem blocking lunar real estate development is solar wind. The same light that would probably fuel such a colony would also slowly crispyfry the inhabitants. The moon lacks our awesome Van Allen belts; radiation is another hurdle to get around.

I don't have time to worry about what will happen to the earth, in another billion years I won't even BE here. Let their generation (if there is any) deal with that shit. I've got more important things to think about in life. If we'd always worried about the end of the world we'd go insane.

This talk about the world ending scares me. Seriously. I love looking up at the sky at night but when I start to realize that there's black holes and many other things that could easily kill us up there space doesn't look so pretty anymore.

In fact this entire thread scared me from all the responses I read. Especially that the human race is going to end just like the dinosaurs. Haha reading my science book I found out that most likely our demise would be a meteor or the sun expanding when it runs out of fuel.

The books also have the possibility of the earth's core cooling down, which isn't so pretty for us.

Pretty freaky thread. Oh well. Everything comes to an end at some point.

Off topic, I know, sorry!

I would think it's cool to live on the moon but it would be scary for people like me. Isn't the moon close to the sun at some point? Also there's the possibility of it slowly moving away from Earth... I wouldn't want to wander far off. So I don't think I would. =.=

It could be possible after many technological advances. They need to create air and have a way to contain it. They'd have to create a dome that could withstand the cold of the dark side of the moon. Find out if agriculture is possible there even while within the domes and many more I'm too tired to think of. It's a long way off, we'll probably be dead before it could happen, if it can happen.

we could only live on the moon if:

1. we reduce (aka- FREAKIN MASSACRE) the whole population (currently around 6.7 billion and growing) down to a few million. Who do we chose? Sounds like a good sci-fi movie plot!

2. Find a way to artificially create oxygen. Since Moon missions today use oxygen from earth, the apparent coming of the lack of earth* ( that sentence didn't make much sense, sorry) will leave us short handed. Oxygen on earth is recycled from carbon dioxide by the plant cell respiration; a process in which plants take carbon dioxide from the air and use it in an energy making reaction of which oxygen is a byproduct. We (animals) then use this oxygen in a similar way except in reverse and the cycle continues.etc. therefore the simplest way to create oxygen is to grow plants on the moon. This is also a problem seeing as how the moon really doesn't have an atmosphere and any gasses we release there would just sort of float away into space.... Which sucks. they would have to be grown indoors, greenhouse style. Since the plants need carbon dioxide to carry out respiration, this means that you would pretty much have to spend all day indoors with the plants so that you could supply them with CO2 and they could make the O...boring huh? i would probably wish I had died in the apocalypse during the first ten minutes.

3. Water. You and your plant buddies need water to live. Obviously. So, we need water on the moon. The problem is, is we just carry it there, it would just evaporate into space due to the moon's pathetic lack of atmosphere. We could also run out, since most or it's gonna go to the stupid plants anyway...
We would have to create it artificially. So far there is no good way to do this since most of earth's water is thought to have come from ice comets that hit earth a REALLY long time ago. If we were to do it, i am fairly certain it would involve lots of work and little output since most known reactions produce very little water. you would have to spend about half a year making the water for yourself alone, assuming that you are reusing it by drinking your own (purified lol) urine.... for the rest of your life.....

not impossible. I mean, this is apparently 4 billion freaking years away so...... yeah, we got time.

Ahahaha that's the estimated time where the sun will expand... Earth AND the moon will be fried. xD Oh well. We're doomed someday.

haha. well i don't pay attention so........... yes you are right.....

SOLUTION!!!: WE WILL TURN THE MOON INTO A GIANT ROCKETSHIP AND MOVE TO ANOTHER GALAXY!

NOW we have 4 billion years right?

Well it would be bad if countries setup bases on the moon with military items on it such as things that can harm the earth and satellites in orbit or even spaceships with crew going to other planets. To setup a base on the moon would require digging underground and building habits in many sections. My guess only would be 1st floor would have to be at least 50 feet under ground to protect from small impacts and radiation. The walls of the tunnels and dugouts could be lined with more items processed from the moon and mining robots that the space agency sends up first to operate years before humans land to make the underground thing liveable.

There has to be a oxygen battery too. Thats a device with 2 or 3 inert substances in it which when exposed to the space vacuumed air or certain waste chemicals it produces oxygen and water. Both of which can be used to produce drinking water, feed gardens and naturally drink and cook with. With out the O2 and H20 battery device the disaster many would not want to witness would happen time to time as the space baser people die from lack of food / water.

The new study of the radiation from the sun adds a new set of problems never before thought of on traveling out past the earths protective sphere. Avoid Jupiter at all costs too its magneto sphere is deadly halfway between its orbit and Mars I believe.

I want to add there is currently not a single planet who would be considered "safe" for any kind of known life to exist, or inhabit. Even if there is a possibility, our galaxy and most precise our solar system is symmetrical orbit-wise in relation to the planets within it. Most galaxies in space, and all galaxies in our neighborhood are not spiral, which means they revolve in chaos.

Yes, there is Andromeda, which is actually spiral, but it is also coming our way, and not even a single planet of star in her is suitable for us, they are deadly to say it in a simple way. There are also millions of bodies on space that will easily kill us. Like black holes, meteorites, asteroids, comets, but most important, radiation.

That's right. The Earth is the only planet inhabitable and every other planet cannot support life of any kind ever except this very one in this very solar system.

Either you worded that horribly, or somebody lied to you when they told you scientist can even study planet's surface's outside the solar system.

The closest you get to a planet is a dot and that is considered a picture.

the Moon is a lot smaller so not all inhabitants of the Earth will be chosen to live on the Moon
i bet i won't be among the chosen ones
plus i bet i don't have enough money to pay or bribe for the trip to the Moon

Just wondering: why did you go back a bunch of pages and revive an old thread just to post that little comment? I've always wondered why people do that.
