As many of you out there have noticed, CR has been promoting and releasing an episode of Fist of the North Star every Tuesday. And as a fan, I say: “good on you CR!”

How appropriate that CR would re-launch Fist of the North Star during its 25th anniversary of being released. That’s right! Twenty-five years ago, on September 13, 1983 Fist of the North Star was introduced to the public. During the 1980’s, no one knew that Fist would gain so much acclaim and remain in the pop spotlight for 25 years. After all, three years after its release Fist was quickly overshadowed by another manga/anime megastar: Dragon Ball.

But is Fist really all that popular?

On one side of argument, I’ve heard fans say that the art is too busy, it has an old, antiquated feel to it, the story is too convoluted and it doesn’t have the “star” quality that other 80’s mangas/animes have, such as Dragonball and Ranma ½ . I mean, if it’s so good, why was it overshadowed by Dragon Ball? All very good points.

However, the opposition - with spirit and fervor - will say that Fist of the North Star, second only to Akira, is one of most ground-breaking, innovative and creative mangas/animes ever produced because of when it came out and the style of stories it introduced to the public.

And just as Kenshiro’s fight rages on, so will this debate.

Now, I take no offense to both sides of the argument. But I’m a numbers person. So let’s look at the numbers surrounding this particular manga/anime:

60,000,000: Copies of Fist of the North Star in circulation.

1983: Year Fist of the North Star was first released.

26: Ranked 26th in the Top-100 Best Anime poll by TV Asahi in 2005.

7: Ranked 7th in all-time best selling Jump series in 2007.

3: In 2007, fans voted Kenshiro as the third “strongest manga character of all time.”

1: Reason you should watch this: Classics never die, they just get stronger.

*****

Yes, this article is slanted towards the "awesomeness" of Fist, but let me just say this: whether you are on one side of the argument, on the other side or are undecided about this series, I encourage you to make an objective decision. Check out a couple episodes and see for yourself what the hype (or lack thereof) is all about.

Let me know what you think!

Happy watching.

I'm no longer interested in FotLS since I've seen better anime on terms of plot, animation quality, etc. Though as I was reading on I noticed ranma1/2! Now this is what I want to see in CR

Edit: It's still great but not on my interest anymore.

how could you not like FNS its awesome the action is great so far and this is my first time watching it and i've heard good stuff (also i see alot of references to it in Air Gear so now i might get all those jokes)....also is this maybe hinting at Dragonball on Cr because that would be epic

edit: nvm dragonball is licensed by fuunimation i'm pretty sure they hate the internet

I actually was First introduced to Fist of the North Star about 3 or 4 years ago so I was really surprised to see it turn up on crunchyroll.

I doubt people will really care about that. Not to be pessimist, I thank Crunchyroll for putting it up, thank you indeed. However the anime (Hokuto no ken, or FoTNS) isn't really that popular in our continent, and old anime is a turn-down for American(as a continent) people, not to mention it is 1000% shounen. Image

Not my type of anime. =__=;
The story is kind of dull, maybe that's just me. But I couldn't sit past a full episode.
Maybe it would have helped if the animation was a little better.
But then again that's probably because I'm comparing it to the anime of today. I might have enjoyed it if I saw it in the 80's when it first came out.

Hey? Hey? Hey? Hey? Hey? Hey? Hey? Hey? Hey? Hey?

OH well, might as well STEAL it from H**** O* M***** because they don't believe in stupid shit like region blocking and buy other non anime things with the money I had ready to go.

Not that it's my type of anime, but most of the new anime that's been going on around here is not available in my region. And this is to most of the people, so it's really no difference to us.
