My chruch was shut down the beginning of this month. It was the only church I've ever been too. We follow what seem to be nromal things. Commuintion, Batizium. Well I decided to follwo my youth pastor to his new chruch, Sunrise FourSquare.
I didn't get to go last week but my friend did and she said they broke in tongue. Spekaing in tongue. When I was there it didn't happen. But they did oinate peopel with oil and communition was optional at the end. I was kinda blow away.
I want to know where the bible stands on this. I've read a bit of it and get vague ideas. I perosnal thinks it's all fake. Casue all the peopel I ever meant who did it faked it. The oinating with oil ( hello massage therapy) doesn't bother me just the speaking in tongues. Veiws and statements on this? I know God doesn't want us to be comfortable but this kinda crosses soem lines here.

Hmmm Paul said in one of his letters that signs like speaking in tongues, were sign for the times and would soon pass away. Also he put tongues dead last in order of the signs/gifts.

Heyo there we're talking about a subject I have personal experience with .

The Christian denomination I come from is actually called Pentecostal and we do speak in tounges, believe in all of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and many more things that a lot of churches don't touch on. Personally we don't fake anything but hey I've never met any of the people you've met so I can totally be wrong. Just remember to be open minded when it comes to God because it's so easy to put God into a little box that we're comfortable with.

Now to get to speaking in tongues. Origionally, Pentecostals and other Christian groups that support this idea go to Act Chapter 2 where it clearly states

1. When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
2. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the house where they were sitting.
3. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
4. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other toungues as the Spirit enabled them.

The gift of speaking in tongues comes from God as the Holy Spirit(one of the Trinity) that enables us to speak in tongues that are unknown even to us. What actually is happening is that the Holy Spirit fills us (baptism in the Holy Spirit) and the evidence of this filling can be shown as a gift from God that enables us to speak in unknown tongues. It's not much more complicated than that.

Speaking in tongues actually is more of a personal relationship with God and is confirmed with the one on one time you have with God. It's not supposed to be freakishly loud or scary and that's one thing that a lot of people that speak in tongues tend to forget. The Bible says that the Holy Spirit is a Spirit of peace and NOT of confusion so if you felt uncomfortable at such a church, they weren't doing a very good job of making newcomers feel comfortable.

This subject, however, is quite complicated and hard for baby Christians to understand so if you want to know more seriously ask a knowledgable person that is skilled in the Bible. If you want a knowledgable answer, try this website and many others that can help. I'll try to answer any more questions but it's not easy lol. But most of all remember that our God is a God of limitless power and authority. There are so many things about him that we could never be able to understand or imagine so it's better to make decisions after you try your best to understand and decide what you really think about spiritual matters.

lol yeah does the same for me. I'm on here for about 5 mins a day.
Okay that helps. Someone good with the bible? Where is cryo when you need him? lol I've heard refered to once as a gift. But that kinda of an odd gift. Take it no one did it while I was there and if no one had mentioned it I wouldn't have even though of it. If speaking in tongues means you're close to God? Mhh,... that means me even a little distant. >.> <.<

I need to look farther into this. Thanks for the link. I wonder why Paul put it last. Maybe I've just let the world twist my bibical view.

Hi I have the gift of speaking in tongues, and I want to tell you it's not something fake, and it's not allways a language you can understand. It's given to us to praise the God, sometimes you can say some prophetic things(and many times you dont even know that), it also help us build a better relationship with Jesus.

I Corinthians 14: 2
For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
I Corinthians 14: 4
He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

I believe in speaking in tongues and have done it. 1Cr 14:39 Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. We should only do it is it is of the Spirit and not our mind, but that is a personal issue. Paul writes a lot about tongues, prophecy, and other Spiritual Gifts.

Mh,.... shows how much I know.
I iddn't say it was fake I jsut said that msot people I know fake it. It jsut seems,...well I don't know a little more on the evil side. But once again I've probably let the world twist my view.
But most of you have come up with different refernce that all point to it's good. It just seems a little strange to me. I don't think it's soemthing I'll ever experiocene though. I'm not close minded to it but I don't think I'll get that close to God.

I dont blame u rose. It's definately a little difficult to get used to.Especially if you've never seen people speaking in tongues before. There are times that people take speaking in tongues out of proportion and your believers should consider other believers before they speak in tongues out loud. Keep me updated on how things work out with the other church if you decide to go again.

Hmmm...Not enough information to determine whether or not the church is 'good' or not. Sure, speaking in tongues is an excellent sign, but I wouldn't base my experience on just that. I would base it on how closely they follow the Bible. Obvious signs that something isn't right: They say something that just doesn't exist in the bible or they use the book of mormon. Blegh, the book of mormon...if you know anything about their leader, Joseph Smith, then you know that Mormonism is just flat out wrong.

But the main point is, I need a little more information than speaking in tongues.

I can't tell you much more. I only went there once and it's only a two hour service. I have sunday off so I'm going again. Everything seems good so far. It pretty close to the serman at my old church. I'm not getting that 'something not right here' vibe yet. I;ve never picked up the Book of Mormon but I know the seaman went right along with my bible.

sorry for freaking out earlier lol but I definately didn't know that this was a mormon chruch...here's a website that talks about how the Bible is the only word of God and it should clear up any doubts...

Whoa! Whoa! Ease up girl! Take ti easy. There is NO Book of Mormon! I said I've never even seen one. I have a classical NIV Bible and the serman went right along with my BIBLE! I repeat NO book of Mormon. I would never set foto in a mormon church. ( no offense if yo uare one) Believe me that owuld set off a huge 'something isn't right here' alarm.
