WALANG HIMALA famous line of Nora Aunor.

i won't doubt that the film won. because the story is surprisingly interesting and basically shows what some filipinos really believed in.

I saw excerpts of "Himala" when I was a kid and the line "walang himala" which means "no miracle exist" has become an epic phrase for Filipino movie goers. I'm no great film critic but those who judged the event were, so maybe they know what they were looking for in a film.
I'd bet that it was the raw emotional conflict and the cultural and spiritual paradox portrayed in Himala that made it a top contender. Then and now despite its black and white film, it had a sort of realism. A story of how desperate, destitute souls create false and genuine miracles in their lives and how or why people let themselves be manipulated and deceived by hope.
Anyways, one could hardly credit the 80's film with faultless cinematography or complex plots but it did have a very effective script.

Infernal Affairs and Chunking Express are top A grade movies and if I remember correctly they have the same lead actor. Spirited Away is a multi-awarded animation but I'd thought they would pick a film with real live actors from Japan. The Ausy and India movie, I still have to watch.

All I can say is: Walang Himala (There's no miracle)!

This movie is really a masterpiece, a reflection of the Filipino culture, beliefs and faith. The actors' performance here is awesome. The movie deserves to be the Best Asian Film ever! Beating Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Old Boy really means something.

Mabuhay ang Himala! Mabuhay ang Pelikulang Pilipino!

Really? I haven't watched, but I definitely thought Crouching Tiger was pretty amazing so it must be really really amazing!

...or the voting audience was not randomized or a large enough sample...

I guess I'll check it out and see for myself.
