I've never seen people look down on someone merely because they were smart. I've seen people look down on others due to their lack of ability to hold a normal conversation, or a conversation of interest to and with another person. I've seen people look down on someone because they're unable to live up to social commitments because they're too busy (work/school/studying). Being intelligent isn't a factor people naturally rule out and mark off as something to be avoided. In fact, intellectuals tend to be leaders.

I'm going to assume you're looking at this from a school environment perspective - correct me if I'm wrong. The "intelligent" or "nerds" in school are only made fun of because they put their studies before their social life. Anyone who puts work before social life will be looked down on. No one likes a punkass who isn't able to be friendly (differs depending on the individual you're talking to). Anyway, high marks isn't something that defines what someone's intellectual capacity is... but that's another topic in itself.

Some people may try to to sabotage those who are doing well, due to jealousy and wanting to stunt their ability, in order to try to make up for their own personal failures. But, that isn't about intellect, that's merely about status.

I've found "intellectuals" who are social are well liked. Those who grow to be elitist, isolate themselves. Others don't have anything to do with it. However you choose to act, you'll find the world will react based on the image you've set up of yourself. I think the misconception is from how "intellectuals" always put themselves on a higher tier than others. When you choose to hate people who are less intelligent than you, then you'll find they hate you in return.

Maybe because they don't have the intelligence to answer back in a good way? I dunno lols maybe they compare themselves to the intelligent people and they feel a bit threatened?

Because in the olden days you had this thing called "Common Sense", "Hard Work" and "Pride".

Universities and colleges churn out a bunch of workshy over educated slackers that think they know best even though they've never done a proper decent days work in their lives and have relied upon mummy and daddy to take care of them for years.

Then they go out into the real world and shunt a hard working individual into the gutter because they've got a piece of paper that says "This guys OK" on it.

Thats why regular people hate intelligence... Oxbridge wankers!!!

a lot of people avoid challenges. and make sure they won't look awkward by putting the challenge down.
intelligence is not easily achieved so it's a challenge.

that's how i see it! i just dumb my self down for the comfort of others, make life easier.

I really dislike people that think they know everything. Or think they are always right.

People aren't afraid(unless that person is both very capable and evil), they're jealous because they aren't that way, mostly cause they're lazy. Nobody is afraid of intelligence, only envious. The only time a person would be afraid of knowledge is when danger is involved like maybe creating the atom bomb. Also it makes a person feel better, don't you think? Berating a person better than you makes you feel a lot better of yourself after all.

do u mean like people who look down on others using words like "geek" and "know it all" and stuff like that cuz i think its just jealousy because if they were as smart as the ones they were taking the mick out of they wouldnt feel a need to try an instigate some kind of authority over them because a lot of people who lack intelligence try to be the 'hard' and 'badass' ones because they want attention

I don't think people handle intelligence very well. Some of you mentioned that knowledge is power and I agree to that. People communicate differently and some of us may find that intimidating. But never judge a book by its cover because you'll never know how the contents might be the most exciting things you have encounter. I used to get tease alot at school for being a nerd (but I'm not) just because my social life is not the same as others.

Isn't this obvious?

Because intelligent people have the direct or passive ability to make you feel inferior and ultimately "dumb". In general, most people are insecure and having someone so much smarter than you will obviously do something.

EDIT:
Also, very intelligent people have the rights to be dicks and be right about it.

Because intelligent people have the capability to do more than those of a less-intelligent mind. It's basically about pride. No one wants to lose, therefore those of a less-intelligent mind will naturally fear or envy intelligent people, because they simply would have a higher chance of winning debates, school grades,or even competition within the workplace.

One example. If you were a person of power, and one day this young man shows up,boasting a far more superior intellect, would'nt you fear losing your position?

This is not a very good example as even if the young man has a superior intellect, thee are many ways of discrediting him to the rest of the company if his EQ and/or social skills are poor.
