I'm really liking this anime. Kouichi is a good character and one that also has development. Imagine, from being a sissy to a self righteous jerk drunk with his own new found power then to someone who realizes that power isn't what it's cracked up to be. He learned about consequences from being drunk with power. From power, he learned responsibility then now he's growing into a season soldier. What his growth tells us is that he is human. Someone who made mistakes and regrets but importantly, he learned from them.

Kouichi goes from the pompous jerk you hated right away, to the person you pitied when he hit rock bottom to the guy who is now being fashioned into a formidable protagonist. He went from bottom to extreme high then bottom again and now he's evening out. I think that everyone can relate to that at some level. I can relate to it because it reminded me of leasons that I learned while turning form a teen to an adult, without the cool mech and girl of my dreams :(

I enjoy this series because it's fun and has some interesting characters. It's just entertainment. It's not meant to be artsy fartsy deep and intellectual, it's just a story about change and growth. I've see lots of people talk that the series is full of cliches, but I didn't go into this anime looking for profound innovation or with high expectations. I just wanted to be entertained being a mech/anime fan and I found something wonderful because I didn't jump into this with biases and expectations. Linebarrels of Iron does have cliches but it also has it's own character that makes it wonderful.

I kept expecting this show to get good, but episode after episode it lets me down. I totally still do not like Hayase.

It doesnt make sense that time after time he insults and disgusts Kizaki and then she is always swooning over him later. The whole love triangle feels too contrived. Why would a hottie like her be interested in a self-centered jerk who says things like "im only interested in Kizaki's body"

He completes one mission and then she is all lovey dovey about it. Why wouldn't she be more interested in the dude with the glasses?

This show has let me down for the final episode. I guess i'll have to keep waiting in suspense for the next episode of Xamd.

Now that show has a good love triangle and real character development.

Oh and the government's top-secret-save-the-world-black-ops-giant-mecha-organization isn't staffed by 13 year old kids.

Wow... I'm sorry to say buddy but I'm gonna have to disagree with a lot of stuff you said here because I appreciate both line barrel and Xam'd and it sounds like you either missed out on some details of both shows or I don't know what.

First I'll start with what you said about Line barrel. It makes perfect sense that Kizaki keeps coming back to him even though he's selfish. Kizaki looks at him and see's a guy who wants to better the world by any means necessary. He proved to her multiple times in the first few episodes that he's a generally good person and that he's trying to do the right thing. Also there is the whole bond they share through the mech suit which brings them pretty close together, also... Hello! They're Hormonal teenagers, letting their emotions run wild and causing havoc and then being whiny and conflicted. Kizaki has got serious hots for the main character and she wants to hate him for all the self centered things about him but then she is reminded of all the good in him and how he keeps trying to prove his worth.

Also you brought up that question about why doesn't she like the guy with glasses, so I'm guessing you haven't seen the most recent episode, I wont spoil that so I'll put it aside. Also my first guess about that guy, (except this is kind of defeated because other girls like him) is the fact that he loses his attractiveness with his sociopath like tendencies, it's pretty obvious he's like that throughout the show no matter good or evil.

Okay now I'm going to move on to what you said about Xam'd. Now I'll agree with what you said about the impressive character development but unless you're totally oblivious to the show (Which I'm not saying you are but it sounds like you missed some important details in the show), there is NO Love Triangle in Xam'd. The whole thing between Akiyuki and Nakami has been nothing but a mutual relationship between what became friends. She took care of him and rehabilitated him, there has been no sign of a love interest between the two and there have been many episodes to this show and still no love has developed so I think it's safe to say that it will stay that way and it will be Akiyuki and Haru that will be together.
The Love Triangle in Linebarrel is impressively well put together. See I have watched many shows on crunchyroll that involve their so called "Love Triangles" and man are they LAME. They will often make a love triangle and tilt it only to one side only to make it so that one girl gets with the guy, meanwhile the other girl just simply does nothing and complains about it, every once in a while the girl will maybe cry and say how not involving herself is the best idea. Pfft! Oh please give me a break! I wanna see a real love triangle, you know where girls actually care enough about the guy to go at each others throats and spill blood (metaphorically speaking of course... heh heh...)! Line Barrel does that with their love triangle, the child hood girl doesn't simply give up just cause she's at the brink of defeat! No she waits for the perfect moment and strikes and turns what looks like a loss on her side into a near victory of getting her guy, so yeah Line barrel has done a pretty damn good job with their love triangle.

I think you should maybe reevaluate both shows again and see if you catch anything you might have missed when previously watching the two shows.

I dont think any of that describes him. He's just a poor guy that wants to be awesome after being the underdog all his life; and now he finally is awesome and wrecks face.
Personaly I say he should go crazy and take on everyone. It would definatly make for an interesting story, especially if he were unstopable...that would be cool.
He's not a hero of justice though...i think the title just makes the characted more appealing. I mean we havent heard the other side of the story yet and I hope theres more to the story otherwise the plot could get very predictable very fast.
Actually i would say that he is a caring person, but thats onely one side of his personality, and he isnt that clever either...so i guess he is a bit of a dumbass.
But a pervert! Come on please...he's just in the wrong place at the wrong time, like most men

he is a dumbass. and the reason i say that is becuase he is too worried about justice to notice that all these good looking girls are giving him all kinds of opportunities. I love when emi is in his room and starts to get undressed and the girl in the pink machina walks in and jumps on the train. AWESOME!! if only stuff like that happened to me.........8^(

I think he's normal, he pretty much embodies the everyday person, albeit he does have a bit of an extreme in his morals, but noones perfect. The reason why I think he's a caring person is because I'd like to think there is good in people. We always see the stereotypical hero in anime, either the weak guy that's always nice, no faults, or the strong guy that has unfailing justice, always knows whats right, I think kouichi is a much more better main character than most because of the fact that he's realistic. He's not perfect, noone is, but he has that quality that everyone can relate to. At least, I could relate to.

I think deep down Kouichi is a caring person he just suffers from having issues that most people have when they are young albiet naive. however he seems to be growing out of the latter at best.

He kind off reminds me of Haseo ( from G.U) in a way... he's a flawed hero giving him a realistic vibe somewhat.

i think he is just full of freakin justice and very narrow minded at this point.
he hasnt tried to get better as a factor yet and reacts with so much unnesscary emotion.
he obviously is overwhelmed wit the whole justice part of what he does and doesnt see the big picture at all and take the neccescary steps to make himself a reliable factor like moritsugu.
and btw catch episode 13, like wow i wanna watch the next ep so bad.
the manga is all in different order from the anime i just found out and has different stuff in them from each other, which is unfortanate but the anime is better for it.
