Censoring books is ruining the world.
Posted 12/8/07 , edited 12/8/07
Well, what do you know? Cencorship is the act of blocking material so that it can't be seen. To censor is to hide the ugly side of things. If you shield children from books like Tom Sawyer or Huckleberry Finn because of the use of the "n word", children won't know how to deal with it when confronted with it. Censorship is also technically illegal in the US so the boards of education censoring books are commiting a crime against the first amemdment.

Today, I'm here to say that it is technically illegal to censor, or make it so schools do not read x y or z due to some mild content, books for children. Why do we censor? What do we hope to accomplish by removing great books from booklists? Harry Potter was removed. That is rediculous. By not exposing kids to some gruffer material, we create the illusion that the world is happy and pretty when it's really not. That does not prepare kids for life.

Also, some of the stuff they're putting on banned-book lists is completely mild or irrelevant. What is so offensive? Another reason why censoring is up now-a-days is probably because society is too damn sensitive. If the rest of society were't so damn sensitive to things: No child would be spoiled (By way of a parent being justifiably tough on their kid), kids would be able to handle racism, sexism, ageism better. More and more am I seeing kids spoiled as hell. This has got to stop as well. My point is, censorship blinds people.

Censorship can only cause problems. Do us all a favor, grow some balls, take it like a man and explain to your kids the gruffer sides of life. That's what parents are for: They aren't here for babying every second of the way, they aren't here for covering our eyes when something bad happens. They are here to prepare us for life and explaining things. Parents should be up in arms against censoring, but contemporary society has ruined any chance of that.

My solution is simple: Instead of blocking out the gruffer themes and books, have teachers talk about and explain such things to children, who cannot comprehend. Once they understand, society moves forward again. And then we're all mildly happy until another problem comes about. What does everyone else think?

I agree. What's the point of trying to "shelter" children at school when all they have to do is turn on the tv.

I agree with you fully; I'm an aspiring teacher and an author; censoring isn't going to help at all, when access to things is so much easier in the information age that we live in. Like you mentioned we have to explain these things, not obscure and drive them even further.

You're absolutely right.

I don't understand how people who censor stuff don't look at themselves as monsters. Reminds me of the book 1984. That's how they're acting. They aren't helping anyone they're simply lying.

Harry potter is probably censored due to.... witchcraft?
Besides
the word "nigger" comes from negro which means black in spanish
Children will learn about "bad things" sooner or later in their life anyway
The book "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury talks about people who censor books by burning them

Niger come from negro and niggard. Negro is black. Niggard means stupid. Mix the two, and you got nigger.
