This happens to me alot and it pissed me off so much!
When I say "people" I mean non-asians. If they see an asian they automatically assume your "chinese".
It doesnt get through to the world that asians are more than just chinese!
Then little rude racist people would say stupid names like call you "chino" and start saying shit that they think is chinese but isnt. The point im trying to get it is why do people always do that? They dont ever want to be mature and ask you your real ethnicity first but just think your asian so you must be chinese?

mmmm. im asian and when non-asians see me they dnt think im chinese. i mean i come accross a few but most ask what i am first. im filipino i mostly get put with the spanish or japanese.
nd if they do that nd like call me chink or something its probably cos they have nothin better to do.
cos when have you seriously seen someone who has there life in order call you chink or chino without meaning to cause any misunderstanding between you nd them?

most people do generalise asian looking people as chinese because there are more of them...but for me and my asian buddies, we get mistaken for being japanese a lot and random ppl shout konichiwa at us and stuff

Probably ignorance, they probably don't know many other Asian countries, but I never get called Chino or Chink or whatever. Don't get too upset over it, just tell them you're not Chinese.

Why are Americans always generalized as White?

b/c most Americans are white.

In a lot of western countries, there are more Chinese living there than other Asians. So people generalize.

. . Acutally it sounds like the ppl you ran into were just being jerks. It had less to do with what they thought you were and more to do with them just trying to make you angry.

In short, life sucks and most people are racist jerks.

ehhh, that happens to me a lot.
and they just seem so sure.
like hey you chinese girl.
orr
oh ur filipino? i thought you were full chinese!
or, are you from china?
and i go. -_-
so my answer to your question is that, mostly only stupid people do that.
and there are a lot of them.

because most asians are chinese. china has a population of 1.32 billion. asia's population is 3.9 billion. china makes up 1/3 of asia and approximately 19% of the world's total population not counting overseas chinese. overseas chinese total over 40 million and over 3 million of which live in the united states.

just by looking at the numbers i can see why people would generalize asians as chinese. although that doesn't give them the right to label every asian as chinese, it certainly doesn't surprise me as to why people do generalize asians as chinese.

I've always thought the same thing.
Whenever I walk by someone random, they would say something related to this:
"Hey you! Are you Chinese?"

I'm thinking some people think any Asian person is always Chinese since I believe there's more Chinese people than any other Asian nationality. If I'm wrong, correct me.

It's the same thing as calling brown people paki, and if your anywhere around the world, most of the time, if your white, people assume your american (specially japanese). People's brains want to make things as simple as possible so the brain always assumes the worst. When they see an asian person the brain signals the obscure image of a chinese person since they are the most likely candidate of an asian stereotype.

Okay. I admit I used to generalize Asians as Chinese. But this was back when I was not into Asian dramas and I lived in a somewhat ghetto area. I was pretty stupid back then and didn't know jack shit about other countries in Asia. Most people that generalize Asians as Chinese, aren't doing it just to be jerks, but because they really have no clue about other nationalities in Asia. Of course, some ARE doing it just to be an ass, but it's mostly out of ignorance. Don't take it so personal.

And as for the phrase "Chino". It's not bad. It's Spanish for "Chinese". It's not Spanish for chink (just an FYI) It might come off as an insult for some Asians, I suppose, and it may be bad depending on how the word is being used, but I really don't think you should be offended if someone calls you "Chino".

Maybe there's some hidden meaning behind the word Chino I should know about? Reply back if there is.
