Why are Americans always generalized as White?

b/c most Americans are white.

In a lot of western countries, there are more Chinese living there than other Asians. So people generalize.

In short, life sucks and most people are racist jerks.

This quote sums it up.

The same reason everyone thinks that America only consist of white people and the other races don't exist, the same way many people think all Asians are Chinese. It also doesn't help when Asian stars themselves don't distinguish themselves either and play along with the ignorance. Why the heck was Bi Rain playing a Japanese person when he is Korean, so right there people who don't know would assume he is Japanese

Also to answer your question the majority in the US are mainly Chinese. I live in Queens NY, and I've never seen a Japanese person yet (well in Queens anyway). They mostly live in Manhattan I only see Korean people because they own our black hair supply shops

I think it's because China has larger population, so non-asians would assume that their chances of bumping into a Chinese is more likely, thus they ask if we're Chinese first.

It does happen, but I really don't know why people always assume we are chinese. I don't know where you guys live, but Vietnamese people are practically everywhere. I know very few non-vietnamese people compared to chinese people from school, and etc... Vietnamese probably outnumber other asians 20:1 here...

i notice ur from north carolina..so r there alot of vietnamese in north carolina?
im just wondering cuz im vietnamese too..nd im from georgia. nd there is alot of viet people down here.

It's the same reason as why Hispanics are all considered Mexicans.

yep...exactly.
when ever i see a hispanic person..i'll automatically assume they're mexican, which is weird..but my mind just seems to think that way.

Hahaha. Funny coincidence. My friend and I talked about this last week.
Her grandma thinks every asian out there is Chinese..
(She saw some Filipinos on a cruise and thought they were Chinese..)
But it's due to the time period she grew up in for thinking that way..

As a fellow asian, I'm seriously not offended by this non-asian "ignorance"
Think about your own mind set. Can you differentiate the "white people"?
Pffft. I sure can't. American? Canadian? European? Australia? Who knows?

So why should we asians expect the non-asians to be able to?

I did the exact opposite that you're complaing about. I asked my (Chinese) roommate what she was (randomly assigned by college, so we weren't friends at the time). She as like, um, duh, Chinese!

My town has mostly Khemer people, so I'm not used to Chinese people. We have Cambodians, Thai, Korean, Viet, but rarely do we have Chinese people, so I just learned to never assume. It depends what you're exposed to. (I did have one Chinese-American friend, but she's always mistaken for Korean.)

When I say "people" I mean non-asians. If they see an asian they automatically assume your "chinese".
It doesnt get through to the world that asians are more than just chinese!
Then little rude racist people would say stupid names like call you "chino" and start saying shit that they think is chinese but isnt. The point im trying to get it is why do people always do that? They dont ever want to be mature and ask you your real ethnicity first but just think your asian so you must be chinese?

based on my experience I find it hard to differentiate chinese from japanese but that was way back b4(its be 'coz of chinese's and japanese has little eyes.i thought they were the same )
people especially non-asians get confused with these differences since they are not asians that's why they dont know much of us asians

that's simply out of ignorance!

they assume things bout Asians coz they don't know much about us......same principle---when we don't know someone else...we assume things bout that someone..(coz we don't know much ,or if any-- just a lil, bout that person)......

but sometimes---i really get confused with my fellow asians---if they're jap/kor/chinese and etc....

maybe they also think that way coz most Asians look alike....for instance...i know westerners are white---but i often generalize white foreigners that i've been seeing in my country as Americans...i really can't distinguish w/c of w/c is w/c..(race)..
if they have trouble distinguishing asians in terms of race....i just think asians, like me, do have some troubles distinguishing Westerners.....

but the thing is i dont go around and start to make fun of that race and make racist comments....unlike most people around the world when they are done assuming that your chinese they make fun of you too. Yes i sometimes assume other races but only in my head. I also dont say canadian, austalian.hispanics jokes around either. I guess people are right its just ignornace from the other person.

Ah.
I used to get that a lot, but I've been in living in this same place for so long, they all should know by now that I'm Filipino.
I remember when I was younger, I think I got bullied for being Asian? I don't remember, but people would call me "Chinese girl" and some people wouldn't talk to me, all because I was Asian, and they thought I was Chinese. -____-; (my school is filled with white people)
Oh well, when they think I'm Chinese or whatever, I just learned to laugh it off. It's really not a big deal to me, that people are stupid.. I mean, it's not our faults that people are ignorant.

I live in a prodominantly white country and when you see asian people they stand out, when people say "oh look at the chinese girl" alot of the time it's because they find the change in facial features striking and pretty and they don't realise what they've said could be so offensive.
People don't generally ask your true ethnicity because they're too embaressed and don't want to appear ignorant: they generalise because they honestly don't know any better.

People all over the world have the same problems either because of how they look or how they sound, because I live in Northern Ireland alot of people outside the country say I'm Irish and I'm really not.

Don't let it get to you so much...

uneducated generalization makes stereotypers dumb. It's not hard to educate oneself so ignorance won't become contagious.
