Congratulations, all of you are officially stupid. "Otaku" doesn't only apply to anime. Its the Japanese word for someone obsessed with something.

anime otaku
cosplay otaku
manga otaku
pasokon otaku (personal computer nerds)
gēmu otaku (obsessed with video games)
wota (pronounced 'ota', previously referred to as "idol otaku") that are extreme fans of idols, heavily promoted singing girls.
tetsudō otaku or denshamania (metrophiles)
gunji otaku (military geeks).

It pays to know the actual meaning of a word before you use it.
Just because you think its cool to go around spouting the word doesn't mean you should.

Atleast do your research first and don't tell me you knew already because you obviously didn't.

How many implied "otaku" as a for anime-use only in this thread? I see less than "all"... Congratulations, now you are also one of those who are officially "stupid".

otaku is someone obsessed with some thing.. example: Gunji Otaku = Military geek and onwards.. most people here think they are an otaku just because they like anime, and they should know calling themselves otaku is degrading

I see someone asking if her information of otaku is correct, someone answered "No". But they did not throw the word "otaku" carelessly.

I see a large amount of people flaming the OP. But they did not throw the word "otaku".

I see a large amount of people confused in this thread. But they did not throw the word "otaku".

I see a few, including the OP, who used the word otaku in the form of anime otaku... So what? Isn't it a lot more obvious for someone to use otaku as an anime-only in an anime section? Unless, you wish for specifics and you are a perfectionist...

You said "all"...

That is one meaning of otaku, but it's more of an indirect meaning. Otaku is pop-culture refers to someone with obsessive interests. It derives from the use of describing your family or place of residence. When you call a Japanese family it may likely be answered as "moshi moshi"family name" no otaku desu". translating to "hello, this is the residence of the "family name"s." How the word came to be used to describe fans is hard to pin-pt. but it's likely from around the early 80s, another term used for female otaku is fujoushi, this term originates from meaning honourable woman but is now used in a slanderous way meaning rotten or fallen woman, it is usually only used to refer to woman with an interest in Yaoi.

Pt. of the matter is that Otaku is now most commonly a slang term as a reference to fandom, be it through anime, cosplay, manga, collectables, etc. To some degree, even though these forms of media are generally acceptable in Japan, to indulge in them is considered unproductive and meaningless. Therefore otaku get the bad rep. as slackers who don't study and focus on real life and critical issues, that they shun hard work for their vegetative passions. The definition you read is an indirect description of otaku, because it's how they are perceived but not what they are.

...this is an edit, I just looked at how many people responded to this statement kind of makes me feel like a sheep. This general disussion is relatively pointless but at least the confussion on the meaning of otaku has kind of given it some direction.
