I just finished watching Curse of the Golden Flower tonight...storyline ridiculous to the point of being funny, but great acting. Usual Zhang Yimou movie and scenary.

i saw that film i actually like it, the family was supposed to be so perfect for the festival and it turns out that they were the exact opposite for a emporer to loose all his sons in one night within dishonour and shame one son in love with his wife his heir gone! its more tragic than it seems, they make the film so that you dont take it too harsh but indeed it is a saddening film of endless betrayals from every cornor

It was confusing for me throughout the movie, even with the English subs. If my parents hadn't been there to explain it I would have been totally lost. Even my parents admitted that even though they understand it, a lot of people in China might have had trouble.

really why is that? i thought that maybe the people in china would understand the film more due to their knowledge of chinese history and traditions and the stance of familly value

The storyline seemed really far fetched to me. A few things really stood out:

I have to admit Gong Li, Chow Yun Fat, Liu Ye and Jay Chou did a wonderful job portraying the characters. My parents told me this kind of movie (ones in which everyone dies in the end) is really becoming popular. I feel Zhang Yimou movies are really getting boring...and his use of colors which he is most known for, hurts the eyes.

Yi San, The Painter of the Wind, Iljimae, and Hong Gil Dong are really good historical dramas.
I think Yi San is the best out of all of them, it's 77 episodes, but it's worth it. <3

A Chinese Odyssey is awesome, but it's more of a romantic comedy.
There are also several movies based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms

drama wise:

light-hearted idol dramas:
Young Warriors of the Yang Clan
Fairy in Wonderland
My Bratty Princess
Romance in the Rain

Wuxia dramas:
Semi-Gods and Demi-Devils
Legend of the Condor Heroes
Return of the Condor Heroes
Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber

Historical dramas:
Emperor Han Wu
