I agree xdarkangel2389x. I am in Japanese now and I don't recommend trying to teach yourself by watching anime. Translators take a lot of liberty with the translations because the exact meanings in Japanese don't always make sense in English especially when it comes to cultural things. However if you have taken a bit of Japanese I do recommend watching anime raws for a listening exercise especially if you watch a high school anime because they use really simple language and forms and repeat words and phrases a lot.

I wouldn't survive speaking Japanese.

I'd rather listen and make out what they're trying to say (a la wartime translators intercepting transmissions).

In case anyone is interested here is a list of the best free Japanese language sites. These are site that I have used and use to help supplement my Japanese class if I don't really understand something.

studyjapanese.org ~ I really like the flash card program here
japanese-online.com ~ this is a good web site to get another explanation if you don't understand something, a lot of the lessons, and articles are member written so the cultural information is really good to
kanji-a-day.com ~ I reccomend this more for people who have had formal lessons or a lot of informal writing and reading practice
learn-japanese.info ~ The best site to start teaching yourself Japanese. The Lessons and tests are offered in both english/romanji and hirigana. Plus everything is divided and explained very clearly
mylanguageexchange.com ~ this is great for informal practice, you can find other English speakers who want to paractice Japanese or a Japanese person who wants to practice English. also I think there is a level setting on either this or another language exchange forum?

I hope everyone checks these out, I am the biggest pro-Japanese and second language person out there
