In case anyone is interested here is a list of the best free Japanese language sites. These are site that I have used and use to help supplement my Japanese class if I don't really understand something.

studyjapanese.org ~ I really like the flash card program here
japanese-online.com ~ this is a good web site to get another explanation if you don't understand something, a lot of the lessons, and articles are member written so the cultural information is really good to
kanji-a-day.com ~ I reccomend this more for people who have had formal lessons or a lot of informal writing and reading practice
learn-japanese.info ~ The best site to start teaching yourself Japanese. The Lessons and tests are offered in both english/romanji and hirigana. Plus everything is divided and explained very clearly
mylanguageexchange.com ~ this is great for informal practice, you can find other English speakers who want to paractice Japanese or a Japanese person who wants to practice English. also I think there is a level setting on either this or another language exchange forum?

I hope everyone checks these out, I am the biggest pro-Japanese and second language person out there

Thanks for the sites, i'll probably look at a few

But yes, i've learned some japanese from anime, and I spent a few weeks studying japanese out of boredom during last summer. I just wish my school taught japanese, they only have spanish, german, chinese, and french.

Sometimes it's better to read than to listen.

Yea just learning new writing system is the hard part especially since japanese has two "alphabets" and kanji but once you get over that the rest is easy:) writing out stuff is a good way to start even if you just do kana charts in your spare time:)

Nope.
Maybe I learn a word or two here.
But that's it really.
I may learn Japanese after Korean or vice versa depending on what i'm doing.

I think it would be realy hard to learn from just watching Anime.
BTW, I have thought of learning Japanese, for the sole purpose of watching Anime.
I learned English as my second language and speak it fluently because I lived in the US for like 7 years.
What I'm trying to say is, it would be harder to learn Japanese or some other Asian language becase they have different letters/characters and whatnot, so you couldn't really sound out the words.

i'm learning because of anime.
it's for selfish reasons though:
i don't want to wait for scanlations so i just wanna read the raw.
i can't wait for the episode to be subbed so i just watch the raw.
