Otaku is such a strong word I guess..
I know about a lot of anime history, and I've watched more anime than I can count..
You could call me an otaku, but some people have different levels of intensity..

I've never cosplayed or have I ever gone to an anime or game convention. Although now I'm considering due to the fact that they might sell imported games..
But I haven't spent a single dime on my joy for watching anime, nor do I talk about it in public unless someone else brings it up first..

same way. love to watch anime and cant even count how many episodes ive watched but have never gone to a convention oregon= not huge anime market haha.

well because maybe Otaku has many Meanings....
they say that its "Fan of -" e.g. Anime Otaku [Fan of Anime] Manga Otaku [Fan of Manga]

but they might took Otaku as "Obsession"... They maybe an Anime Lover but they are not Obsessed at Animes,

In English, it is used to refer specifically to any kind of "geek", though it can sometimes refer to a fan of anime and/or manga. It also is used to refer to people who appear to be obsessed with Japan and its culture.

"What defines an otaku?" is a complicated question that resists quick and easy answers. Media sensationalism aside, "otaku" has gone from simply being what hardcore fans used to call each other to being a general concept of how individuals use information for their own ends. William Gibson calls otaku "passionate obsessive(s)". Volker Grassmuck describes them as "information fetishists". Personally, I prefer my own definition: "self-defined cyborgs". In the most basic sense, an otaku is someone who is highly dedicated to something and uses information from anywhere and everywhere to further his or her understanding of that thing for fun and maybe even profit. In a world where deep intellectual curiosity is considered strange and usually unprofitable, the otaku lifestyle has a lot to offer that is different. To promote negative stereotypes of otaku (or any group) amounts to a subtle form of bigotry--so subtle, it might even be unintentional.

It's called being a closet otaku. People are so afraid that changing their lifestyle now will affect their social and work life that, though at home they spend hours staring at a computer screen and have little models covering every surface, they never talk about anime in public. On the other hand, there're the types that wear cosplay to school (usually teenage girls), add kun and chan to the ends of the names of all of their friends, say baka in stead of idiot, etc. and generally shove their fandom up the noses of anyone who stands still long enough to be forced to listen. In between are my type, who will talk about anime if spoken to about anime, might wear the occasional anime T-shirt to school, and while they aren't afraid to admit to their otaku-ness they don't walk up to a person and say "Konnichiwa!! My name's _____-chan, nice to meet you?? Oh, your name is ______-kun?? Do you like anime?? I'm obsessed with Naruto....."

Well, the most people think that being an otaku is a bad thing to be.
For example, I've never seen a geek saying that he's a geek. Maybe it's because he's embarrassed or he doesn't define himself to be a geek in the first place.
The question you asked depends on each individual. There could be many reasons why they don't define themselves as that.

Do YOU even know what an true Otaku is? if not then don't call yourself an Otaku if you don't own Figurines/Mangas/T-shirts/Stuffs for the bed/Wallscrolls/Limited Anime Boxes/More Figurines/Wallpapers, And many other things. You don't have the right to call yourself an Otaku.

So im asking, do you have anything of these? or are you just a "Anime fan that say's to him self/her self that he/she is a Otaku because you own a few Animes/Mangas?,

Maybe they're afraid other people might find out, like people who don't watch anime or think it's stupid. People that don't like it or don't know about it aren't all that understanding.

Because quite a bit of people are not otaku.... Like I think most people I know that watch anime agree... Its nice if they have a nice plot / cool ect ect.... But like if it was gone it would be like ok w\e they just watch casually that's how I am.... If I hear somethings good I will watch it if I like it I will continue watching it but Im not like some loser American kid who youtubes all the japenese commercials and music just to comment Kawaii or Sugooi and type all there words in Janglish just to try n look cool...

theres a lot of talk about what an otaku actually is or at least ive read some arguements about it. it seems some people think its a demeaning term and dont like it and others are happy to wear the title. im not actually sure what it signifies. i know it means anime fan, thats true, but ive heard debates about its connotation, whether its a good or bad thing about being an anime fan.
