Because some people thinks otakus are disgusting etc. so they
don't want to be called otaku because people will think that they're disgusting etc.!
And maybe they don't want people to know or they're shy or whatever!!!
And there are lots of reasons that you may not think about and that person is thinking
about that.
WHATEVER!

I would be seriously proud if someone called me an Otaku. I don't think I am quite obsessive enough to be classed as one but should I ever get called that I would hug the person with joy and happiness as I would finally have shown I was a true fan!!

You see I use most of my money on anime and I have very little of anime things cause
1.Am poor
2.Am poor
3.Am poor

If I had money my room would be an anime figurine paradise :]

But I have nothing against otakus cause I consider myself one ^________________^

I like anime, manga, bjd, cosplay, and everything else that comes with that culture but i ain't that fucking bad

if i had to choose going out to eat or a date, movies, hanging out with friends then i would totally choose that over anime. Otakus are people who's whole life is anime

Otaku actually has a really limited meaning, and most people who call themselves otakus really are not otakus. Other people before me explain it well enough, and the pictures should give you an idea of what Otaku really means.

Actually, the word otaku carries a very negative meaning in Japan. It's seen as a sort of social disease, even moreso than most Americans see Trekkis today. Otaku in Japan usually go hand in hand with NEETs and hikikomori, making the meaning even more negative. The "otaku=big fan of anime" definition that you know is a tainted definition, watered down and preversed by Weaboos.

I deny that I am an Otaku because I can, in my own view, do so honestly. I enjoy watching Anime & reading Manga, that is all. I don't go out and buy tons of merchandise related to my favorite show(s) or manga, I don't obsess over the characters or pick fights with people who do not share the same views and opinions that I do regarding these mediums, and I most certainly do have a life outside my home. Perhaps it isn't as great as many people, but its certainly there and I do associate with people outside my "circle".

I will admit that I spend a notable amount of my free time immersed in them, but no more than the average person would if they watched television at their homes in the evening or read while eating a meal or such. Really, more than anything, it amuses me when people refer to themselves as "Otaku". Perhaps it no longer holds the same stigma as it once did, but when I began my fanship it was a one-way ticket to being socially shunned, even among your fellow fans! Anyway, that's my view on the topic. Take it as you will.

Because no one really wants to come off as a total fucking loser. The real meaning of otaku has a rather negative connotation to it.
